konarob8, where are you based, do you fancy meeting up for a beer.
Timberwolf, pop down to Goerge's Wine bar in 1950 when you get here most days after 5pm for a beer or nice glass of wine.
Today it was terrible. Rain in the valley, light snow and windy higher up. Poor vis and not much fun. Yes I stayed at home. If anyone went up please do post, but my friends up the hill said it was really bad although the fresh snow in the trees was ok. It is forecast to continue tomorrow so maybe by thursday it should be fun if it does not get any warmer. Oh well, you need snow to ski so I guess we have to have some bad days.
Oh yeah and just so everyone knows, I am not a guide or instructor and I do not work out here and have know connections with any business so what I post is my own honest views and not to promote anyone. I just hang out during the winter, have been here for years and if anyone wants to meet up for a beer or maybe go skiing/boarding they are very welcome. Drop me a pm anytime.

Thanks snowcrazy, my opportunities to visit Wine Bars might be limited as I'll have the Timberpup in tow, but he'll be in Ski School all morning for the week, so we might be able to hook up for a slide as I'll be looking for people to ski with. I'll try and remember to send you a PM a bit closer to the time to see what you're up to.
Cheers, Timberwolf.

Great!
We're going to be in the MGM in 1800 Alpages De Chantal
Just trying to find somewhere for the little one, the crèche is apparently all booked up, might bug up our holiday plans
I doubt we'll be going out anywhere other than 1800 tbh, but we'll see.

Well the snow arrived and yesterday was a great powder day, the sun came out for a little while and fun was had by all.
Today, I woke up, read my text messages, looked out the window, checked the web cam's, saw the rain down the valley, the thick clouds and high winds around the mountains. Found out that all the links to the higher runs were closed and went back to bed.
By 12 noon nothing much had changed and when this was confirmed by a mate that had been brave enough (mad) to go up, gave up the idea for today, watched a movie and chilled. I hope the sun does come out tomorrow as there is loads of wet powder around.

Yesterday the sun came out again and most of the morning was spent playing around in the fresh snow. Had the chance to make a few fresh lines but the main Les Arcs area does get skied out quite quickly. Still a great day.
Am away on a little trip for the next few days so anyone else around please do post.

Back at last!!! A few days away from skiing and I start getting withdrawal symptoms. Very sad I know but how does everyone manage. I do not think I could go back to a 9 to 5 job in the winter!!!
Today I thought we were off to do Bellecote, just for a change. When I read the early morning text, it said high winds, cloud and snow coming in by midday, so guess what, we had to cancel.
Still went up for a ski and it was not as bad as they predicted. Cold with a light wind but the top of AR was shut. Had a fun ski around in mixed light all over the resort. A thin layer of fresh snow (really thin 1 or 2cm) did not do much to freshen the slopes or off piste.
However after all the recent snow fall the pistes still seem to be in a good condition and the off piste was OK although unpredictable with all the changing temps over the last few days.
Now it has clouded over again and there is a threat of more snow tonight and tomorrow. Race day tomorrow so will have to hope for better light. Anyone coming out is in for a fun time if the present snow holds up. Oh yes and the roads are clear into resorts right now.

snowcrazy, is the snow cover still ok down into Vallandry? I'm intending to come out on Mar 14th, but I've been in Vallandry before when it was just a slush-fest. I've not booked yet - decision time is about 10am tomorrow morning (Mon 8th), but if you think the snow will hold up for another 2 weeks, I'll get right on and book it!

Probably Mid April, or not in the last couple of years. I came back April 12th last year, and yes, that day it was awful, but fine leading up to it. Vallandry is quite low (1600) so doesn't reflect conditions higher.
I'm out same time as you (driving down on the Friday) for a 'while', staying in Vallandry, have no doubt it will be fine - go for it!

I was in Vallandry April last year - was skiable to village but slushy as you say. Soon as you get up high was fine.

Finally got talked into getting back on a pair of race skis, what a mistake. Not very good to be beaten by people older than you even if some were ski instructors before. Oh well just have to admit I skied rubbish. Next time I better practise on the race skis at least for a few days before the slalom so that I can remember how to use them properly.
Have to say that the weather in les arcs yesterday was very strange. On the Arc 2000 bowl side, almost nothing was open due to high winds and yet on the Arc 1800 side most lifts were running and little wind until later in the afternoon.
The effect this had on the pistes and off piste areas today meant that most of the pistes all over Les Arcs and la Plagne where we also skied were very hard packed with a small dusting of wind blown snow on some runs or icy patches. The off piste had been sand blasted in some places, had wind slab in others and breakable crust just to add to the mix.
Yes it was all a challenge to ski but there were the odd surprise areas where you found pockets of quite nice snow to put a few tracks in before suddenly hitting the harder stuff to ski on again. An interesting day and what looks like a challenging week.
WiRED, you will be fine, loads of snow down to vallandry right now. Hope to meet up with you guys for a beer.

snowcrazy, got our passes today. Out in three weeks for a fortnight, so still damn expensive for the family, but better than nothing I guess (actually ended up spending more than normal as went for the full blown Paradiski - "well, it would be daft not to at these prices - see how much less it is than if I bought them at another time" etc. he says with woman's sales logic head on)
Will mail you as soon as I get some time re our discussions on other matters.

snowcrazy, I didn't know about that offer until I saw your post! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an option to pick up the pass in Vallandry, and not enough time via post, so it looks like I can't take advantage of it

I am coming out on Saturday to Arc 1950, If I order my lift pass with the offer that Snowcrazy kindly posted about will I be able to pick them up at the pass office ? When you go to the order page it says something about 10 to 15 days to sort tickets out.
It's a great deal and I will book them today if anyone can help.

We had a blast over to les arcs this morning from champagny and I recommend anyone heading over soon brings plenty of warm clothing, it was absolutely freezing in arc 2000 this morning.
I'm sure it's always colder on that side of the Vanoise Exp, the snow however is currently in great condition all across Paradiski

Doesn't the offer finish at 17:00? Which will be French local time, i.e. 16:00 here. So I think my earlier query about picking the pass up from Vallandry might be redundant now

Roger C, Hi next time you are coming over do send me a PM and we could meet up for a lunch time drink. How long are you out for now.
allanm, WiRED, Papalaz, JimW, Boris, konarob8, DaveB, Timberwolf, Look how many snowheads are going to be around in the coming weeks and this is just from this page. Anyone around Arc 1950 pop into George's wine bar for a beer and a chat if you are in the area. I am there most days from 5 - 6.30 ish, but only sometimes this week as I am going to the X games in tignes as well.
The pistes were ok today but I would not say they were in great condition right now, but I must remember I get to see them all season so am a bit over critical sometimes. The wind has done it's damage though and today there are quite a few icy patches coming through on the busy runs where the snow has been blown and scraped off. The off piste is very wind blown in most places but where the snow has settled can be quite fun. Skiing the well tracked areas and trees gives the chance to test those skills and face new challenges so there is a plus side as well.

Problem is, getting to, or more accurately back, from Georges to Vallandry is the proverbial PITA. If you fancy a beer at The Altiport, then we can all ski back from there.. unless you're based in 2K/1950 of course.
If anyone is in Vallandry, I'm in the Mont Blanc most nights, similar times.
Can't wait.. three days to go, and no definate return date!
