Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Only via a massive detour via Germany.

The highway from Landeck is closed

I believe standard trains are closed Landeck-Bludenz, but maybe they are still running special shuttles from St Anton to Langen?

Given the forecast it seems likely avalanche risk will be even higher tomorrow, and I would image the Arlberg roads will still be closed unfortunately. If you're still in Innsbruck, Axamer Lizum should be pretty good when it opens tomorrow (at least before/unless it warms up) as the lifts were shut all day today.

Fair bit of snow in Innsbruck city too.

Alas no. The Langen-StA shuttle is not currently running. Apparently both an avalanche exposure and risk of snow-laden trees falling on power lines.

@stanton, no, Lech from Innsbruck was not via Germany. The S16 and Arlbergtunnel are open, and Flexenstrasse was too.
But things have changed in mean time:Flexenstrasse is closed too, so Lech and Zürs have joined the closed club.... wink

Video doing the rounds of a staublawine from the slopes above Schnann coming down, will post a link when I find one, was shown it on a friends phone. St Anton cut off, they allowed people out this evening via road, but not in, and no trains running anywhere between Bludenz and Landeck. Talk of avi risk possibly rising to 5 tomorrow, further sections of road are due to be shut (St Jakoberdorfstrasse between Gsör and Gand) this evening.

In st Anton at moment. Non stop snow since about 4pm yesterday....limited skiing today but was plenty open given the weather conditions......loads of powder moguls all over the runs.....my question is when all the snow stops falling as is predicted on Tuesday.....will the pistes be groomed or left ‘au naturel’ For remainder of week

@Sneachta2013, my experience is that they groom as soon as they can (avoiding the day when skiers are obviously around).

Heading to St Anton week 6 (Feb 3-10). A little concerned as it looks the last precipitation until we go will be rain these next few days, then warm temps, then dry sunny and cool until we arrive. Hopefully they get at least a few inches before we arrive to freshen up the conditions.

No way they can open the pass to St Anton via extensive blasting? I guess it’s not the high pass, more the section from St Christoph down into town above Verwall that’s an issue? Just looked out our window in Lech and it’s still coming down. Can hear the road blowers/ ploughs buzzing about but no blasting yet. We’ve got friends sat in Innsbruck and Friedrichshafen supposed to be in St Anton it’s not good at the moment for travellers or hoteliers.

Alas, the forecast rain has arrived. Not very heavy ATM, but certainly rain, not even sleet.

It looks like a glide crack is opening up in our courtyard. 😛

Update: looking at the path outside our front door, it looks like maybe 25 - 30cm of additional snow since 4pm last night. Not going to help the situation!

@Markymark29,
That is a bit insensitive. The Arlbergpass is currently the least of their worries....
Stage 5 means: spontaneous avalanches can occur everywhere anytime, and can reach villages......Blasting is probably too dangerous in many places.

I left St Anton the weekend before the 1988 avalanche. I believe the avalanche came down from the Rendl side, crossed the valley floor and took out buildings on the Valluga side of the valley.

I left St Anton at about 6.15 a.m. yesterday. I hope history is not about to repeat itself.

@richjp, it also took out a load of buildings on the Rendl side, crossed the road and went on into Nasserein. I was there shortly after. Place looked like it had been bombed. Nobody thought that an avalanche would come down to the valley there because there was a sizable forest in the way. Went down like matchsticks. It was after that that they put up all the avalanche barriers up on Rendl.

@Steilhang, I assumed that is why there are now so many avalanche barriers on Rendl.

If I recall correctly before they relocated the railway, there was a sort of an upside down avalanche barrier on the Rendl side of the railway embankment, to stop snow from coming uphill into Nassarein.

It is a bit concerning how heavily-loaded some of the barriers are at the moment.

Limited skiing today. Snowing above the top of Fangbahn, and raining below. Had a bit of fun for a few hours.

Nassereinerstraße a river this afternoon.

The road out of St Anton (direction Innsbruck/Landeck) is OPEN for private cars (NOT lorries/busses/etc) until 5pm. Winter tyres mandatory but no need for snow chains.

As yet no word on cars being allowed in to St Anton but I imagine this is unlikely until at least tomorrow.

Valluga North Face has been sliding quite frequently in recent seasons..including Fatals (skiing) but this is not a slope with Human habitation below it.

Anyone have a view on how likely it is the resort will open to guests tomorrow? Tour operator is optimistic but updates from St Anton authorities seem increasingly pessimistic. Based on info they’ve provided today I can’t see how they will open the road to all vehicles tomorrow. No desire to spend another day in Innsbruck & flights home are selling out. Any views appreciated!

@Village, Difficult to tell..imo why Avi Level remains 4-5 which effects the whole Stanzertal (Landeck to St Anton) the situation will remain the same...

I think the SnoPak is so unstable they cannot take the risk..even under pressure from various sections..

The Avalanche risk is not expected to drop tomorrow at all (5 above 1800m, 4 below) from what I understand, so I can't see them letting guests in. Not helped with the rain and warming temperatures. From a safety point of view given the avi risk, with fewer guests in resort they have a better knowledge of who is where. It was the same deal again this evening for getting out of resort as yesterday with busses being escorted to an emergency access point for the tunnel and then down the valley to the various villages. For workers, there is a bus in the morning to get in to St Anton.

This evening’s update suggests no change for tomorrow- http://www.stantonamarlberg.info/help/en/aktuelle-situation.html

Basically cut off from the world except for limited arrangements for employees and outbound guests. Frankly, I cannot see why that would change for at least another day or 2 beyond tomorrow.

Update: what @Sitter said.
