wantalot, Hi sorry for the high jack of your thread, its just that the "all mountain skis" tends to get a lot of of us going way off piste.
Its all about what you love to ski and there is no real answer to it other than what you like to ski and most of us of us have our favourites

wantalot, possible? Yes, as long as limitations accepted. But personal compromises to make and depends on size of person, level of skiing and any preferences for type of skiing, so recommendations? No!

Oh, absolutely! Check out any of these new skis with sidecut and metal edges, and I'm pretty certain they'll "work in powder, crud, slush, carving on piste AND hardpack"

airbornebadger, the question could perhaps have contained a bit more detail to be useful, but the OP presumably came on here because he saw it was a site with a lot of useful information on it. No need to greet a new poster in this unfriendly, not to mention illiterate, fashion.

Pedantica, I would greet anyone, new poster or old, in that fashion for asking bone questions on a subject they should be an expert in.
Sorry for my illiteracy I would like to say that I was pissed, but unfortunately not, I am merely thick. We cant all be blessed with the brains to be a 'Cranky high street conveyancer'

In answer to the original title of the thread then i believe yes..In les arc this week and have movement jam's....this morning i have been up to my thighs in powder and this afternoon i have been bashing through chopped up pistes where i found some random bits of ice. The handled everything i went through and were easy to throw around on piste with short turns..i loved them... cant wait for the new snow tonight to get out there again tomorrow first lift on my jams..

wantalot, Armada TST is a good ski, but huge tip rocker means that when snow gets really chopped and heavy it gets pushed quite a bit. I think Volkl Mantra is more like a ski you are looking for. I ski both TST and Aura (ladies' Mantra) so I can make a direct comparison between the two and go for Aura when conditions turn nasty. It's a real crud buster, and is very good on hard pack groomers too. |
Agreed I have Auras as well and they are the first ski I would say is a proper all mountain ski that I enjoy skiing anywhere with. Past skis have included Elan Magfires, Volkl Bridge, Rossi S3, Icelantic Pilgrim and have also demoed a ton of skis as well, the old Volkl Karma would probably be my 2nd pick.

Movement Gladiators were the best (my favourite?) truly all-mountain ski, but the fools stopped making them. The current incumbent is the Movement Thunder also inexplicably dropped from the line . I will eventually need a replacement for the Thunders as the go-to guy, will be difficult to replace i'm reckoning

Fair enough, if you are a ISIA Level 3 then I am sure your piste skiing will be far tidier than mine. This does not stop me being surprised by your lack of ski knowledge.

et tu Brute? do you really think an ISIA would have tried every ski there is and be an expert in all of them ? I would never be so presumptuous as to say i knew how every ski skiied, so seek advice from a wider spectrum of users. No-one knows everything... i am always learning...
|

You know it makes sense.
|
Of course you would not know how every ski skied, but I would of thought you would understand the different physical aspects of each different type of ski and how that effected the skis performance in a specific scenario and therefore the concept that an all mountain ski could ski as well as a specialist ski has a fundamental flaw.

airbornebadger.. i do & my opinion was that there was no such thing as a ski that did everything well despite the manufacturers claims.. just wondered what others thought.. or if someone i hadn't heard about had pulled off that trick. As an instructor such a ski would be very handy because we need to look good on everything, but we don't always.

I have been giving this a lot of thought. I have been skiing for about 30 years, with the odd couple of years break in between due circumstances beyond my control, so probably about 25 years worth and still learning all the time. I'm on my 6th set of skis at the moment but have yet to test them. My last set which I still have were awesome if not a bit heavier than usual, they are Atomic D2 vario Cut 170's I found them excellent on groomers, hard pack and held very well on ice, which was quite impressive. they were hard work in the slush and sugar though and I did try them off piste for a few days when we had a late dump of snow last season but seemed OK and not too bad. I have just started venturing into off piste a bit more now and trying to get decent powder has been a bit of a lottery for me. So I was looking for a good all round mountain ski too.
Having chatted to a few instructors on the way up the mountain in the gondolas to get a feel for what is out there all mountain wise, most said go for a hybrid type ski and a couple mentioned the Salomon BBR. This is the one I have gone for, the BBR 8.9 176 and will be taking them to Mayerhofen next week and Sunshine village in Banff in March. I see one member has posted on them above, has anyone else got any reviews on SH? I did extensive research and looking at loads of reviews on You Tube with so far it seems everyone is more than happy with them.
Andy.

i think pros like instructors / patrollers etc may be influenced by what deals are agreed with their employers and manufacturers. But then again pros can make pretty much anything look all-mountain. Compared to the average punter anyway

on piste i still use the metron B5 - awesome piste ski but a bit heavy in the powder, and to carry around! For everything else, currently on Scott Punisher which does a fair job as an all-rounder, but hoping to get to try armada tst and movement jam soon.
Don't have a dedicated powder ski but i wouldn't think it would be difficult to choose one..

Thanks for your reply Barry, It was actually interesting though that none of them actually had the BBR's themselves, although I did spot a few others with them on the mountain. I think they were only available as a new ski last season so will be keeping an eye out to see how many are on the mountain this year.

I had a pair of B5s, bought untested. I really didn't like them and sold them after a couple of weeks use. Too hooky, too heavy (and I like a solid ski) and not especially stable at speed.

OK, having tested the BBR's recently in Mayrhofen I can say that on Piste they are awesome. They are great on the steeps with short turns, carve really well on the groomers and cut through the crud well too. Just a little point and it is a little point, they are not quite so good on the Ice as my Atomics are.
Off piste not really had much chance as the day we went it had warmed up and there was that, freeze, thaw, freeze situation, it was hard work as the capillary action of the water under the ski severely slowed things down and made turns very difficult. in fact by mid afternoon if you tried a turn you just stopped, so we knocked it on the head. Should have gone the day before but although it was snowing, the Viz was dire and very flat.......
I found a patch of nice powder the day before but it was only a small patch and only got in 4 linked turns which seemed fine and they float well; this was on our way back across the mountain at the end of the day and we were pushing it to get back for the last gondola, otherwise I might have gone back up the T bar for another go.
All in all a good result so far and I am pleased with them. I'm certainly looking forward to trying them out in the light fluffy stuff at Sunshine and Lake Louise in 4 weeks time.
Andy.

How did I miss this??
Must have been having too much fun. Skiing probably.
"a ski that works in powder, crud, slush, carving on piste AND hardpack.. not true shiny ice (does anything work on that stuff)"
Obviously, Nordica Dobermann SL-R. And it works on blue ice too.
