Hemsedal: dire, grubby, expensive and tiny. Top half is very very windswept. Hated it.
La Plagne: alway always mega busy, les arcs in comparision was empty.

Piccadilly, when were you last in Serre Chevalier? Lift system has been heavily upgraded in the last 6 years. Most of the slow lifts have been replaced now.
Fair point, it was about ten years ago so from that point of view it's probably much better now* . I doubt the rest has changed though. Probably the quietest resort I've ever been to in the evening, along with Pila and Flaine. I also hate loads of walking in ski boots, it wears them out!
*although having just checked last year's Good Ski & Snowboard Guide, apparently not?
Unfortunately this was my impression as well. A bit outdated lifts and therefore similar general feeling about the whole place.
I liked it, still remember many great runs but would not rush back soon.
Hells Bells I can see they have put new chair Vallons to serve Cucumelle run, but at the same time removed the only chair in that "Col Mea" little valley on top.
Are they going to put any chair there soon? Seems like coming back from Monetier you have to use drag lifts to go through on top or ski down right down to town.
Not very convenient.
Kirchdorf was the worst skiing "resort" I have stayed at. It has 3 pistes, a total of 1 km.
We stayed in a pension. a 15 minute walk the other side of the ugly busy main road.
We soon found out why the new years all inclusive package was dirt cheap. We were made to feel like intruders at the pension:cry
Then again a few Euros to upgrade the pass meant we could hop on the ski bus to St. Johann, Waidring/Steinplatte and Fieberbrunn so I probably would go again if it was cheap enough but would opt for nice hotel.
Kirchdorf was where I learnt to ski and we were only on the local runs for 1 or maybe 2 days before we were let loose on the Steinplatte. I only have good memories and I remember the pension being a great place with fab food and good entertainment. But it WAS back in the Cretaceous era so my memory is a bit dim and I certainly couldn't tell you what it's name was.
In terms of where I wouldn't go back - probably only Pila and I have been to dozens of resorts. Nothing really challenging and I think I'd skied the whole resort in a day.

Isola 2000 was miserable - blowing a gale and -18C with virtually nowhere to get out of the weather and the skiing was pretty ordinary.

I've never skied down in L2A. Quite happy to ride down in a lift. Why do people insist on skiing down in resorts known to provide a poor experience of skiing down - and then moan about it?

Apparently in L2A it's so they can experience the full 10km of pistes, instead of limiting themselves to the upper 7km.

Wouldn't rush back to Borovets, had some good laughs there but not due to skiing. The piste skiing was pants and the off piste was in very tightly packed trees with long walks back to the resort.
I live in Scotland so skiing here is ok because it's local, I wouldn't travel much further for it though.

That particular descent is still on my list - U need to do it once eh?
And then there's Greenwich Park of course. Or are you just some of those holiday skiers who think they've "done" a resort if they've skied the best-known runs?

Not sure I can be confident of NEVER going back, but my list would be:
- Kissing Bridge and Holiday Valley in upstate New York.... pistes better suited to ice skating
- anywhere in France during one of those perfect storms of most European schools on half term and a bad snow year

Why? I admit the large number of good skiers means the more easily accessed bits get skied out quicker than many places, but the possibilities are so huge...

Not to mention the tour across Hampstead Heath, starting from Kenwood house (West car park) and ending with the descent of Parliament Hill to Gospel Oak.

possibly the most boring skiing I've ever experienced.

Another vote for Arinsal - limited and dull skiing especially if the lift link to Pal is closed. Better than a good day at the office? Marginal, very marginal.

Agree with the sentiment expressed earlier that any skiing is better than a day in the office.
Having said that I would not hurry back to Are; quite limited skiing and you need a bus transfer to link across to the various areas. The main area (served by the gondola) was pretty good, but the weather when we were there was sooooo cold and windy many areas were shut. Also not a great fan of long (even very long) T bars. Drinks were eye-wateringly expensive (and yes I know its Scandanavia so should have expected that but the cost was taking the wee wee for wee wee).
Having said that, if was Are or nothing I would swallow my prejudices and return.

Spyderman, can you elaborate? I went to La Ros on my first ever ski trip, I enjoyed the skiing because I'd never been on a mountain before, but I found the town eerily quiet and couldn't help feeling I wasn't getting the full experience.
I've been there twice, once for a day trip from St. Foy, basically skied it to get to La Thuile, second time was this March, went from Aosta Valley on another day trip, don't know why I didn't stay in La Thuile for the day really.
I found La Rosiere to be a succession of identical boring flat pistes all lined up next to each other on a soulless plateau. The lift system to get back to La Thuile is dire. Village is boring as, eating on the hill was expensive and poor compared with just over the hill in La Thuile. La Thuile is also far from my favourite place, but it's far preferable to La Rosiere.
I won't make the mistake of visiting it for a third time, that's for sure.

That's precisely what it is. One exception - Fontaine Froide. One of my favourite ever runs.

Mr Piehole, I thought Heli-Skiing was dependant on where you landed, so you can take off in France, land in Italy, then ski back into France. I'm not 100% on that though.

Tom W,there is no need to use drag, you can ski all the way down to Villeneuve and up the CAsse du Beouf chair. I didn't use a drag lift in 5 weeks there last season. There will be a chair going in next season to replace the drags in any case.

I've not been to Whistler but it would be my entry in the forthcoming (probably ) thread about "Ski Resorts you've never been to and hope never to go to". My opinion formed by speaking to several people who've been there, none of them were in any hurry to return. Weather sounds very hit and miss. And they nearly all mentioned the rain..... IIRC they couldn't even rustle up some decent conditions for the Olympics.

pam w, after already spending a fortune on flights and accommodation, the weeks leading up to our trip were full of doom and gloom about the snow being washed away, a Pineapple express coming in from the Pacific, and the real threat that the resort might even be closed before we arrived. We had reports from SnowHeads in resort too. It wasn't that bad, and there was snow on the ground, but cover back to the village was poor, and fomr 9 days out of 10 it was foggy, damp or raining. on Day 10 the sun came out and I had a good day's skiing.

Agreed - terrible. I buggered off to do my own thing after one mornming.
was there in February with beginners (who loved it - who needs a huge mountain, if you're just starting out), and they had had the best snow they'd had in over a decade. Perfectly pleasant, but beginner to intermediate pistes, and I'd skiied everything in 2 days. Awful queue for the gondola to the second hill, and horribly limited if thatsecond hill is closed.
On the other hand, cheapness, strip clubs and general shonkiness would make it fantastic for a long weekend ski-stag do.
