Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Probably not much until there is a pattern change. The Dolomites are simply too sheltered from the north and west which is why it is so dry more often than not.

However the good news is that virtually all the runs are open in the Sella Ronda and have been since early December. They will have had far more actual skiing than the Tarantaise which has been plagued by closed runs, hign winds, poor visibility and avalanche risk.

in my book a week of sunshine is worth a foot of snow snowHead The prospects should however be good in VDI next week when pressure builds and the wind drops, although the freezing level does look to be rising up to 2500m.

we arrived in Cervinia yesterday to another 15cm of snow. The view from our hotel room over the matterhorn and red run 3 is for all the snow you could wish for. Unfortunately we're sat here waiting for the winds to die down a touch so they can get the lifts open. All the forecasts say the winds WILL die down, just got to sit and wait.

STILL nothing in the south of Piemonte. I am starting to feel quite glum about this, the lifts are timed to close end of March/early April and we have yet to lose the grass!

A couple of the larger resorts have made a piste or two each, but it's VERY restricted...Last year saw snow early December until they closed the lifts at the very end of April!!

Cervinia update. the lower lifts opened at 9am, with a couple of the higher ones opening up after lunch. Great snow on piste, the off piste was a little windblown in places, but above knee height in others, just your luck. Hoping for calmer winds tomorrow to allow all the lifts to open. The sun shone all day though so we cant complain Very Happy

Was in gressoney/alagna from Friday to Tuesday. Very strong winds (120 kms) on friday compacted the off piste snow. Now unridable.

The sun is shining and the pistes were very good. Mid week there is no one on the mountain but Saturday was a joke. 1 hr from time I entered q to buy lift ticket to time on got on lift. Crazy crowds.

I was looking for off piste and so cut short and spent day on verbier yesterday and Andermatt today. Keep going east is the advice!

I'm with family in Bardenecchia this week. They seem to have missed all recent snow in other parts of Alps and badly need some. Slopes just about covered but everywhere else is just brown. Conditions in afternoon poor with yesterdays temprature at 9 degrees and warm sun all day. Been a while since I skied in January in just a fleece! Forecast for next few days here is sunny but no snow.
First time we've been here and resort is fine, not a huge ski area but some nice runs first thing in morning when its quiet. The Jafferau area is a nice wide bowl but with 2 chairs not running for some unknown reason and one large main run cordoned off by local ski club again the amount and variety of runs is very limited.

On piste snow is still excellent. Temps have remained just below zero, and the pisters do a great job every night. The offpiste is pretty hard though. The winds at the start of the week have blown the soft stuff away and left a hard crust behind. Will take some photos tomorrow, as i know i always like to see photos when i read the reviews.

Returned from the Sella Ronda today (Canazei). No off piste to speak of, but, despite scouring winds, the excellent piste maintenance and profusion of snow cannons mean that the pistes are actually very (surprisingly) decent. The snow on the Marmolada on Thursday was a particular highlight. We had a ball.

peter42, Just arrived in Bormio with about 40 other keen skiers. I've a group of around 10, who are all good off-piste skiers (but technically are cr*p - don't tell them I said that). Any suggestions where to go given that the forecayst for the next week is no freshies at all...

Back from Cervinia today. The past 2 days had been pretty warm, and the pistes suffered a bit because of it. Rock hard in the morning, sugary snow on a hard base in the afternoon. The offpiste is rock hard as well, with the high winds having blown all the powder away. Really needs another storm, or at least cooler weather to sort it out.

Just back from a fantastic week in Selva. On the Sella Ronda on Thursday there were a few bare patches appearing on piste by late afternoon due to the combination of wind and being fairly warm on the lower slopes. More snow is needed but I think the cannons will have been used over the weekend as it was very cold on Saturday when we left.

Wall to wall sunny blue skies again here in Bormio this morning. Temps yesterday were -10 at 2000m at 9am, warmed up to +3 early afternoon, and dropped quickly as the sun went down and lots of the snowcannons came on.

General piste conditions are firm - and scraped on busy runs: but there are quite a few pistes not open as the snow-depths aren't that great. Off-piste is good in places, but you need to avoid the rocks and sastrugi.

Got back from Selva val Gardena yesterday, four bluebird days, one cloudy day and one snowy morning. Friday night about 10cm fell in the village, anybody going out there in the next few weeks will have a blast.

Even with no new snow for 8 days the pistes were flat, little bit scratchy in places but the pisteurs do an excellent job.

Just got back from The Milky Way based in Claviere. There is a good base on piste, though there are places where the wind has blown the surface down to hard-pack. It snowed on Friday, about 5cm in all I would say, but again it was windy, so the effect is uneven. The best snow is to be found in Sestriere. We didn't go to Sauze, but one of our number who did said it was a bit bare down to the village, but otherwise good.

I do not venture far off piste, but there were some nice powder tracks being laid (not by me) among the trees. The pistes in Claviere were excellent yesterday. All in all, conditions on piste are fine, and the slopes well looked after.

2planks, luigi or others - how cold is it up at the top of the lifts? The various webcam stations on the valgardena.it site are showing around -4C today and I understand there are supposed to be similar temps later in the week, but other sites report it as being colder. And on another thread here at Snowheads (can't find it at the mo) a Snowhead who'd just returned from that area mentioned that conditions were good if you like '15 below and sunny pistes', which sounds quite chilly.

We're off to Selva on Saturday and haven't been there this early in the year, so wondering how much fleece to pack...

We had -12 in the mornings but it warmed up, if sunny. Was not an issue for me just you have to eat inside and best not to hang around too long in the shade. The low temps are good for the Selva area as they can make snow and preserve the pistes, I reckon cold, sunny weather is better than freeze-thaw conditions.

I wore a ski jacket with insulation and a merino base layer and a fleece and was fine.

Got back from Livigno on Saturday - Had four very cold clear blue sky days, one cloudy day, and heavy snow on the Friday. The higher pistes above the treeline were pretty badly wind scoured, but were mainly intact. The snow was much better lower down. About 6-8 inches had fallen by Friday afternoon, and I woke up on Saturday morning to another foot or so on top of that. It was sickening to have to leave in some of the most epic conditions I've seen. It didn't seem very windy, so the higher pistes should be better off, and the snow in the town looked unbelievable.
Here's a wee vid of some messing about in the trees on Friday afternoon filmed on my Drift HD170 -

Fingers crossed the Sella Ronda area will actually get some snow in the next 24 hrs. Or perhaps all that grey stuff on this afternoon's webcams is just fog?

Headed out there on Sunday and beginning to despair somewhat about the apparent lack of snowfall in the last few weeks. Why oh why when it's been dumping down everywhere else ? rolling eyes

My first time out there skiing, and trying to take heart from what everyone says about the good snow-making and piste management.

CathS, Don't despair! I was there last weekend and the piste skiing was great. The very cold weather will preserve the snow and of course allow the snow guns to go full throttle. You'll have a great time.

After several days out attempting to ski in zero visibility in Morzine last week, I'm also trying to think positive in that I'd much prefer to ski on icy snow I can see rather than fresh snow I can't.

And if all else fails, there's always Bombadinos to experiment with...

CathS, It wasn't really icy either. A few patches (steeper reds and tracks through trees without artificial snow) were a little scraped at the end of the day but nothing too bad at all. Most of the pistes were just very pleasant and grippy. I also was a bit worried before I went - but needn't have been. Edelweiss valley above Colfosco was particularly good for snow and the Hidden Valley was almost perfect to ski. Enjoy the fantastic scenery, the wonderful skiing, great mountain huts, and the brilliant mixture of Austrian, Ladin and Italian culture. Where else can you get the benefits of Italian food and German style apres ski!

Dont worry. We were on the Sella Ronda yesterday and just one slope had poor visibility. It was cloudy and snowing lightly but visibility was fine. Almost no flat light.

Good news for those going to Arabba on Sat - snow there was lovely

Snowing lightly again today. Can't wait to get back out there .

Please - any news on the snow at Bardenecchia ??
My son is off there for his schools ski trip over half term, whilst he would be able to cope, it will be dissappointing for them - there are a lot of beginners and it could be difficult for them...
Thanks.

Bergfex predicting masses of snow for the Dolomites for next weekend. But Snowforecast/GFS are predicting virtually nothing, with the precipitation not making it much further north than the Adriatic. Who will be right? (Noisey -the Bergfex predicted snow gives a few cms to Bardonecchia too but not in the same quantities ).
