paulhothersall,
That sounds great, and just what I'd like to be doing. I will definitely be coming along, possibly not until start of Sept time but I may make it over before if the dissertation progresses faster. Guess that gives me some motivation!
I'll be driving over from Manchester after work - how long do you think that will take? I know it is about 1 hour without traffic.
Would you reccomend someone use a slalom as opposed to a GS ski for the training?
And I think that makes 200 posts!!

I drive over from Warton (near blackpool), about 90 miles and about 2 hours to factor in any traffic. From J15 M62 (where i get off on the way home) to cas is 35 minutes.

A slalom ski. The slope is not big or wide enough for GS (especially the 21m radius REAL GS skis), instead you can do GS style work on the slalom skis. The speed of movement, and improved balance are big plusses. on the minus side, it is easy to rely on the ski to carve, and also have a speed threshold that you need to work on when you get out on a real piste.

paulhothersall, I'll hopefully see you next Mon then. Good to hear that you're planning specific trianing programmes etc as I haven't seen much evidence of that on my visits. This isn't a complaint as I realise all the instructors are volunteers & the sessions are really excellent value for money however I would personally welcome a structured programme.
rjs, Welcome to snowHeads. Hope to meet you soon also.
I'm easily spotted as I'm the old fat 'un with orange Atomic freeride planks, orange Tecnica boots & black Spyder jacket (what else?).

Right I'm getting impatient and not really wanting to wait until I finish my dissertation before coming along to a Monday session. So I'm setting myself a goal that if I manage to finish objective 1 today, and make a good start on objective 2 tomorrow (say 1000 words by 5pm) then I'm going to reward myself by coming along!
paulhothersall,
Will I need to join Lions the first time I come along or can I go as a guest? Do I need to let anyone know that I may be along tomorrow?

beanie1, I think that you need to attend on a Sunday session, before you can go to the Monday night one.

What do I do when I turn up - pay at the counter or pay Lions directly?

So last night I went along to my first race training session and really enjoyed it. Will definitely be going as often as possible.

Glad you enjoyed the session working with Stuart. As I mentioned before once we get past the race, I will get properly involved with the coaching.

Sorry no, as I didn't know you were going to be there.
I've been trying to think who was with Stuart that I hadn't seen before so I'll take a guess at the light/white jacketed female with black pants that I saw nibbley running the poles?

Rockyrobin: male, dark hair, early 30's, also in black, no helmet, green 1080 boots & yesterday on blue/white Atomic demo skis. Often seen making annoyingly neat & smoth short radius turns down the middle of the slope.

Unfortunately not! No, I was the one in pale blue jacket, black trousers, black Briko helmet - complete muppet in the gates (first timer)!!
Think I saw Rockyrobin.

Well I just asked paulhothersall if it would be ok to go along without having been to a Sunday session, he said yes so I pretty much just turned up! There was a lady collecting money - I paid her for last night and I'm taking the membership form and subs along next week.
You need a helmet - but think you can hire one from Xscape.
paulhothersall would probably be better person to ask.

beanie1, Actually I've got the right person. I meant to add the helmet to my list. Just a little off on the jacket shade. Old age I'm afraid (45 today ).
Great fun isn't it? It's certainly going to push me on to the next level etc.
Aren't the gates hard considering we're not really turning that much across the slope? I reckon it's because we're forced to turn at set points etc. I've only done about 20 runs in total over the few sessions that I've attended. My problem is that I'm not turning early enough & so don't get close enough to the gates, end up 'late' & get forced in to the back seat etc. I also need to plan more than one gate ahead!
It's so frustrating as my turns on the open slope aren't too bad.
I find clattering the gates pretty intimidating (that's if I actually get close enough to them!) so I need to get some real beginner drills from Paul for this. I saw someone going down last night with their poles held horizontally out in front of them which seemed a good 'gate bashing' drill - come to think of it, was that you?
The cross blocking method that the kids were doing is a bit out of my league at the moment & I reckon it could induce body rotation if not taught correctly.
Paul gave me some useful tips last night (thanks Paul) & I'm really looking forward to his coaching when he's fully up & running. He also put in some very nice runs himself considering he's recovering from a crocked knee.
Did you get some useful feedback from Stuart?

spyderjon,
You're right it is a bit intimidating hitting the gates - comes with practice I guess. Yes that was me with my poles horizontal! Seemed a pretty good exercise.
Stuart was very helpful - particularly with the drills we were doing prior to getting in the gates. I really noticed that my skis are quite long for the slope though, particularly when we did the stepping up exercise. After a couple of steps up it didn't leave enough space to get a carved turn in!

paulhothersall,
Thanks. I can get equipment quite cheap so thought I'd invest in some pole and leg guards, seeing as I do want to continue with it and improve. Do you think it would be worth trying the arm guards too though?

I'm doing it.
There is also a Masters (over 30) race to be run within the main race.
I'm guessing that this is open to non -registered racers, but it would be worth checking with
Neil McQuoid.
