what if the volcano does not stop for months like last time it erupted |
It's almost certain that it will, but the current phase the the eruption (which is violent and producing large quantities or fine ash) is not likely to last for more than a few days.

Was about to order some stuff from UK, making use of the excellent/pants* exchange rate, but then realised that the package isn't going to get much further than the DHL/TNT depot is it?

For stranded air passengers, the European Commission advises that "EU passenger rights do apply in this situation". That is, airlines must keep passengers informed; must provide refreshment, meals and accommodations as required during the delay; and must offer a choice between reimbursement of fares or eventual delivery to the final planned destination.
However the EU cautions that, as the volcanic eruption is an exceptional circumstance and not the airlines' fault, "passengers are not however entitled to additional financial compensation that would be the case where delays or cancellations are the fault of the airline". |

Look on the bright side. A really big volcanic eruption could reverse global warming.
|
Could mask global warming for a year or two. C02 has a half life of hundreds of years in the atmosphere and we are pumping it out continually at rates that are still increasing. S02 has a half life of weeks (or less) in the atmosphere and the volcano will soon stop.

the current NATS statement
Quote: |
Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Friday April 16, 0830
The cloud of volcanic ash continues to cover much of the UK and the eruption in Iceland continues. Following a review of the latest Met Office information, NATS advises that restrictions preventing flights in English controlled airspace will remain in place until 0100 (UK time) tomorrow, Saturday 17 April, at the earliest.
Flights in Northern Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland to and from Glasgow and Prestwick will continue to be allowed until 1900 (UK time) subject to individual co-ordination. North Atlantic traffic to and from Glasgow, Prestwick and Belfast may also be allowed in this period.
From 1900 (UK time), forecasts indicate that Scottish airspace may be able to accept domestic flights within Scotland and Northern/Southern Ireland, and North Atlantic flights to/from airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
We will review further Met Office information and at 1430 (UK time) we will advise further arrangements. In general, the situation is dynamic and subject to change. |
So if Scotland is freeing up it may spread south overnight, So I'm going to hold my nerve and pray.
And if and when I get a flight I'm getting there well early as I can see it been nothing but a big backlog chaos.

Dwarf Vader, which way is the ash spreading? Is there any danger than as the north of the UK gets clear Alpine regions start closing down? Pointless being able to take off if you can't land near where you're trying to get to.

A bloke in the bar ( ) says no flying until Sunday lunchtime at the earliest,
all low fly pilots on standby to protect UK airspace if required, as the usual boys do so via a height currently blocked....

What are the alternatives for getting to Europe?
P&O has stated that it cannot accept further foot passenger bookings until Monday because its cross-Channel services are full. A spokesman issued this statement: "Many of our incoming sailings from the Continent for this weekend were already heavily booked with returning Easter holidaymakers and pressure on outbound services is now also such that we are unable to take further foot passenger bookings until after the weekend."
SeaFrance has added a foot passenger service on it Dover and Calais sailings (it normally only accepts passengers with vehicles) at 11.25, 12.30, 15:50, 16:50 and 20:00; plus Saturday morning. For foot passenger bookings, call 0871 22 22 500. For vehicle bookings, call 0871 22 22 500.
Eurostar is fully booked today on all routes. There is limited availability on Saturday and Sunday. The rail operator is advising passengers not to turn up at its stations unless they have a confirmed booking.
Eurolines offers high frequency services between London Victoria and Dublin, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne. It has announced further services on key routes between the continent and the UK. Fares to Paris for today start from £40 single and £55 return. |

A glimmer of bright news.
Quote: |
Dr Matthew Roberts, a glaciologist at the Icelandic Met Office, has flown over the volcano responsible for the ash cloud.
There's a lag effect between material being emitted from the volcano and the ash plume drifting into European airspace
Dr Matthew Roberts
Icelandic Met Office
"The situation as it stands this morning is that the eruption continues. It seems to be quite stable. There haven't been any further significant outbursts of volcanic ash from the eruption site," he said.
"However, as you know, there is still volcanic ash in the atmosphere and there's a lag effect between material being emitted from the volcano and the ash plume drifting into European airspace. So, the material that's in the sky at the moment was ejected on 14 April and currently there isn't any new material leaving the eruption site." |
Lets hope it disperses in the next 12 hours

.Ro, so that's a "snap" there then! I've got the eurotunnel booking on standby on my browser, ready to click the "buy" button. Trouble is, I suspect the next announcement will be to bump the "no flights until..." time back to 1pm Saturday. Meaning that I could then rebook my flights to the 4:30pm flight in the hope... but then it will bump back again probably and, by then, it's too late to get on the eurotunnel in time to make my short break worthwhile... I think if they bump it back again then I have to just take the plunge and book the tunnel crossing.
