Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Under the normal circumstance we would expect the gondola window to be able to take a certain amount of abuse. How much of it has been designed for apparently has not stated. The manufacturer and French authority prefered to simplfy the case by stating the equipment has not been used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation. That may be for convenience or financiasl purposes to preempt future claims.

There was an earlier report saying the police on testing the equipment found a couple of windows easily pop out by a "mild" force. The window that fell with the victim was also reported unbroken but in a full trim piece. Thus there was enough evidence that the windows were unable to restrain a modest lateral force from the inside. The technical side of it is still a subject of an investigation.

I'd expect a modern gondola window seal (and the window itself) to withstand someone falling reasonably heavily onto it; that could happen without any untoward behaviour. Still this is all speculation, is it not?

I just had my buddy around who was in the Gondola behind and was sent to discover the body. We had a brief chat about it, his turn of events is very different than that of the reports we're reading. Puzzled

The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc is being prosecuted for manslaughter following the fatal accident in March 2008. An inquiry from the transport department indicates that the gondola lift was defective.
