What I don't get is why people believe that the predictions will be true. Yes they might be, but (with out getting Christian), nature is intelligent and adjusts. It's not a dumb thing and it can't be predicted. IMO
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

What i said was that, as this thread proves, due to the increasing unreliability of snow conditions pre booking is BECOMING more and more of a gamble.
This thread doesn't prove anything. It certainly doesn't prove that conditions are becoming more unreliable and thatpre-booking is becoming more of a gamble. There are a few things I think that are exacerbating the "percieved" problem. The first is that some people perhaps have higher expectations of what snow should be there in January (Dec/Jan has always been a gamble as far as I'm concerned in Europe at the lower resorts - hence travel agents have never sold them as "guaranteed snow" or "snowsure". The second is that things are slow to start this year, as they have been in many years in the past. The main thing though that I think is exacerbating the "perceived" problem is the internet. Everybody is here worrying about the weather all over the place. There are instant "snow reports" available from resorts. There are webcams showing some bare slopes (others of course showing snowy ones). And it's almost started some mass hsteria thing.
Years ago we would have booked our holidays and forgotten about it until it was time to go. Then we'd turn up in resort and be either happy or disappointed with what we saw. But even if disappointed then we'd still make the most of it. My first trip to Arinsal back in about 1992/3 - when we turned up there was no snow in the village. Walking up to the lifts there was no snow. This was early Feb And there were only 5 runs open. But we all still had a great time and none of us left disaapointed. It snowed a lot the day we left. When I went to Mayrhofen a few Christmases ago, there was no snow in the village (just rain), hardly any visible snow on the mountain, and it was only in the cab;e car on the way up that we saw there was excellent fun to be had at wel over 2000m.
At the moment I'm yet to be convinced that things are any less reliable over here than they have been historically - but I do think people are expecting so much more. I would love to go to the US or Canada one day, but it's likely to be without the wire and kids due to money (I'll send them to Butlins for a few days). And I would also feel a bit guilty about adding far more to greenhouse gas emissions by flying such a greater distance - which is only going to make the future bleaker if indeed we are seeing problems as a result of "global warming" - although that's only scientific speculation.
I was only joking about copying Sutts, by the way.
By the way, other than the wire, I couldn't have put it better myself.
(Edited for "fat fingers")
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Listen up you Essex boys I know your not going to believe this but there are places in this world where the skiing isn't as easy as the girls. When you have gone beyond waiting nicey nice in the queue for the blue run button lift, there's real mountens out there for ya in that there Urope, ya'll.
DB, do you always wave your dick in people's faces like that? Get it bitten often? Or more of a toothpick? All the macho Real Mountains crap; you were never a beginner?
I'm as happy shredding the piste as bouncing in the powder, but I remember that just 5 seasons back I was close to tears on an easy blue that I can now do backwards as I teach my daughter the joys of the piste. I'm fortunate enough to have my own business and the ability to bug off to the Alps several times each season, but never forget we all started on the greens.

petemillis, all too true. There is a large population out there who have the skiing analogue of "second year medics syndrome". Just cos of some badly placed webcam and a couple of dodgy comments on threads like this they reckon their holiday is doomed.
It ain't necessarily so.
and another thing: North America:...
Do a Google News search on snow in NORTH AMERICA this year and you will find that MOST places have had AT LEAST as bad a start to the season as Europe. It is a CONTINENT not a COUNTRY and you have to be WELL CAREFUL if you want to find snow sure stations...
Where did my goat go to, as someones clearly got it...

Ah yes the classic 'backtrack'. You don't want to be taken seriously, O.K i can do that. Also ,as with Europe and the USA, there's an awful lot of piste between Essex and West Sussex
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

There is some piste round these parts - I've skied the Devils Dyke on two occasions, the Saltdean Clifftop and the Happy Valley + several others. Never any lift queues (something to do with no lifts). Trouble is the pistes are only skiable perhaps once every few years.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You soft sarfvenors are probably best off in one of those USA pampered "Have a nice day, do you want fries with that" ski resorts anyway. At least you're not far away from central Europe when and if you are ever ready to ski the big resorts.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
