Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ssh, but are all those terms loosely called "crud" in the US?

I must admit IMHO, US crud = nice snow in Europe!!

My favourite US marketing phrase is skier packed powder, ie hardpack!

kitenski, not around here (Colorado). Here, "crud" means cut-up fresh snow. It may be used to mean different snow types elsewhere in the US.

There's a new term that seems to have emerged that may be close to what you think of as "crud": "mank" Shocked Laughing Laughing

ssh, this really started because of the Bode Miller video - if one couldn't ski pretty well on that stuff it would be sad! So Veeeight where's the Bode video on "mank"? wink

I thought

glades - wooded hillside that have been thinned out to make the skiing easier
trees - tall green/brown wooden things

jedster, you are correct, I was trying to simplify the description - in Europe, it might be referred to as skiing in the trees/through the trees/through the gaps between the trees, or whatever (hey, I'm struggling to use words that won't be shot down!), whereas in the US, they would talk about skiing in the glades.

ahh but my point was that you can ski hillsides that have not been gladed (i.e., thinned out to make them easier) and then you are still tree-skiing even in North America. Skining glades is synthetic tree-skiing if you know what I mean

jedster, Ah - yes - no glades here! We do have trees though, and Lampbus has personal experience of tree skiing. Very Happy wink Mind you - it wasn't exactly skiing in the normal sense of the word, it was making our way through some very tight saplings ... v good control practise. Decent adventure skiing too!!! I think I know exactly what you mean easiski. Some years ago a friend and I followed a group of 6 ESF instructors (in uniform but not with clients) down what looked like a glade above Le Praz / Courchevel (I know, I know). after a couple of hundred vertical feet the glade ran out into dense trees and the instructors disappeared. As we didnt really know where we were going we felt obliged to stick to their trails. One of the things that I learned is that if there's one thing trickier than skiing steep, dense trees in powder it is skiing dense steep trees in someone elses tracks when its icy underneath. Quite a humbling experience.
