I'm not quite sure how to describe today other than it was EPIC. We awoke to snow (snow) and a plan was hatched to conquer Kangarutinden, which defeated us two years ago due to a windslab issue. The skin up was in heavy snow. Here, TeamBag O' Skittles schleps up 700m.

The Powfinder General got it right with the weather and as we summited, the clouds parted. Sorry Andy.

Several 1000 polar bears in Svalbard, and they have been known to bite.
Been avoiding this thread, cos I know the scenery is going to be stunning. And now I'm going to have to go there. Especially having family that originates from Lofoten. |
I've been to Henningsvar and it is stunning.
I love Lofoten.

The truth is, he floated the blower pow so well he didn't leave a track. Arno was on it today

@GlasgowCyclops, Henningsvaer is probably the prettiest habitation I've had the pleasure of staying. We're in Balstad this time which is South of Leknes in the west. It's almost as as picturesque

When you guys have time, would you mind sharing some of the logistical info: travel, accommodation, etc. I'm also interested in hearing about your touring setup and how it compared with others in your group on the up and down.

Well, Irbis and I were on the 9.39 flight which got cancelled, so as we wait in the grand Leknes airport for the next one, here's some info:
Flights: three legs: XXX-Oslo-Bodo-Leknes, with the last one being a short half-hour flight so overall not as bad as it seems. The alternative airport further east would be Svolvaer, which is a larger town - also a lot to ski in that area.
Once we were here, offpisteskiing had arranged everything, including two rental cars, two fishermen's cabins at the Kraemmervika Rorbuer in Ballstad, and breakfast / dinner + packed lunch. The cabins are basic but authentic and did the job, including drying of lots of wet gear. We did not use them to capacity though - it would have been cramped. The meals were excellent and the host, Yngvar, is a true character.
Touring gear: we all had various flavours of Dynafits (except for Simon who was on Plum Yaks) and touring boots. No other way to go, really (of course other tech bindings or Marker Kingpin would also do the job, but I would not advise F12s, let alone Barons, Fritschi Diamir etc). Skis included two pairs of Whitedot Ranger CLs, one of K2 Coombacks, One Scott Powder'Air, one DPS Wailer 105 and one PM Gear BroModel carbon. All are pretty light and did the job very well.
Gore-tex or eVent (or equivalent) are essential. I would not tour here with less than 20k/20k waterproofness / breathability.

Well that's it for another year but as we stand in the queue to get on our home bound flight in Oslo, I can't help thinking that even leaving Lofoten was awesome.

@offpisteskiing, It looks a bit worrying, doesn't it! I can't figure out why the phone processed it like that. We flew right over the couloir we skied on day 1; unfortunately I couldn't get a picture but I think it's the first time I've ever flown close over a line!

@Arno, I resembled the chap in your photo in the green jacket and black pants just a few weeks ago on my first tour – I had no idea that kick turns would be so tricky with only toes attached. It was a rude awakening

No way could I do that skiing, but the Lofoten Islands have always fascinated me. I missed out on a geography field trip to the islands because of illness, many many years ago, but these wonderful pictures have inspired me to have a second glass of red and Google some summer sailing trips to the Lofotens (midnight sun and all that). I have a lot more idea what I'm doing on a boat.
(I was OK at the uphill kick turns when I did my little bit of touring - it was the skiing down which was trickier..... ).
