Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Collision risk: what are we going to do about it?

 Poster: A snowHead

Time for the + button. Gave him a chance after the eviction. Now he's joined PJtrollski again.

Witnessed one collision last year. out of control fast skier and a n00b. From the chairlift, it looked like the out of control fast skier ended up with a spacked ACL if he was lucky. Might have been bone breakage or dislocation.
Hope the beginner wasn't too shaken up.

Last person to cause me not to be connected to my skis was an ESF instructor Evil or Very Mad and that was also a hit and run. Flat green path just off a lift, so no time to get much momentum. Person before that was my brother on about day 2 of skiing. Skied right over the tops of my skis, practicing snowplough turns. Mind you, I've also skied right over someone else's skis too, but that was to avoid a pile up coming off a lift Twisted Evil

An awful lot of snowHeads seem to get wiped out by careless and/or incompetent ESF instructors.

red 27, my nephew, aged about 7, wiped out an ESF instructor who was standing in front of a class of kids, pontificating. Nothing but his pride was hurt and it gave the kids a good laff. My sister skied past on the other side of the piste, shook her head and pretended she didn't know the lad.

I've seen collisions, and I've been skied over or forced into emergency manouvers but far more often I've seen unassisted injuries and the worst injuries we've had yet were done in a lift queue and on a dry slope (self inflicted). So while it's frightening and infuriating to be taken out, I'm sure the bigger risk to life and limbs is our own skiing skill and ability to adjust to the conditions. Although I guess the more cautious/skilled you are yourself, the less this is true for you as an individual....

That said I wouldn't mind more active patrolling like you get on dry slopes, especially for hometime and blue runs, I guess they just don't have the patrollers to do it though....Once or twice with my own groups I've wished someone would stop them and say 'hey you are being an ass' so it wasn't always me being the killjoy wink

well the first one I picked up on the road up to 1850 the other day was a chap - but the second was a very pretty, slight, blonde woman. I pick up hitchhikers on mountain roads not infrequently - I deny any suggestion of special feelings for ESF instructors. wink I wonder who Raven and I could pick up on our long drive from Chamonix to the Dolomites in a few weeks?

under a new name, I'm impressed with the skating. I was doing classical all last week and I was struck by the extremely fine gluteals of the skaters, as they passed me. There were two classes of skaters learning at the same time - one more advanced than the other but they all looked pretty good to me. I think I've left it too late and will stick to classique. wink Do you wear Lycra?

Not quite - I was working tonight in a live performance venue with near-naked women colliding in transparent pools of water, suspended above the audience's heads. No one wore helmets. I'm definitely flouncing if nothing sensible happens here.

With less than 7% of injuries coming from collisions, I think efforts would be better served in reducing the incidence of injuries in other areas first.

I have read through all the posts on this thread wondering if someone would actually come up with any ideas. I have skied since 1973, although have had 2 big gaps because of children and/or finance, so have spent considerably less time on snow than many of my fellow snowHead on this thread. With that in mind I find it quite remarkable that those more experienced than I have witnessed so few collisions. Obviously mine is a purely subjective view, but I would bet serious money that there has been an increase over the last 10 years or so. The fact that resorts' figures don't back that up is not entirely surprising given the inherent self interest. I wonder if actuarial figures would show the same thing.

I am a reasonably able skier, but would not dream of skiing at the speeds that (as a huge generalization) some of the twenty/thirty somethings do at home time on the lower slopes. The fact that these are clearly very competent skiers makes it all the more reprehensible. In the last couple of years I've seen nearly half a dozen collisions caused by high speed skiers crashing in to others.

At the same time, we could have some 'advanced' only pistes - perhaps reserved for skiers who have been signed off by instructors.

MJS, I don't know, perhaps that's a workable scenario. Please don't think that I'm having a go at all skiers who ski quickly, I'm not, I do it myself when I feel comfortable. As I said it's a subjective view, but I genuinely believe home time accidents have increased.

mozwold, didn't take your post as having a go. I agree that there are too many dangerous skiers out there. I take lessons every ski trip because I love to improve my skiing. I would love a world where reds and blacks were populated by skiers capable of 'skiing' them as oppose to getting down them but realise this is not the case. I shall continue skiing as fast as possible on empty pistes and finding a way to have fun safely when there are folk around. Drills and excersises can make a green run fun!

"We" aren't going to do anything. Individually you can do everything you can to use situational awareness to ensure you aren't the victim, and if the choice is overcrowded WROD or not skiing, perhaps choose not skiing or at least waiting for gaps in traffic.

Oh and let everyone you see being a c u next tuesday know what you think of them wink

I recall a judge in the US taking the same view when sentencing an expert skier who had crashed into, and killed, an English girl.

The reason I have seen so few collision, in a lot of skiing, is that I avoid the most dangerous times and ski in a quiet area (with no package tour Brits - I rather agree with some of the suggestions that they are particularly dangerous). I feel the risk, in these circumstances, is low. The fact that I was injured in one of the very few collisions which happen doesn't alter my perception of the risk and I have little doubt that my biggest risk, by far, is damaging a knee ligament in a fall caused entirely by my own efforts.
