Have spent the whole day off piste in lovely powder, corbalanche this morning was bliss, as was the off piste from top of tete des saix down to chamois red. Heaps of snow, and not large lift queues at all. Under corbalanche lift was rather good as well, just not as light as south facing. North facing slopes have some really light powder snow. Had to be careful as risk was 4/5
Only annnoying bit was hitting a tree stump. so have a sore ankle, which is a bit odd as its in my boot?????

First day in the Grand Massif, awesome snow trees were laden with it! Mad queue's, i was pushed into the netting on the arete by some rowdy german bloke who looked back, saw me, shrugged and carried on skiing! The snow was showing signs of wear towards the end of the day and the run down to Morillon village was chaos even though it was shut with hardly any snow!
All together an awesome day, heading to Flaine tomorrow for some higher altitude!

Samoens busy but conditions stunning today. Did not go too far up as was escorting newbie skier and boarder but did enjoy it. A few thin patches here and there on narrower runs later in the day but nothing the bashers won't sort out.

GENERAL SYNOPSIS
Enjoyable fairly sunny condition until the end of the year, thanks to that Spanish high, subject to Austrian temptation.

First day today, stuck to blues as I'm not a very confident skier. Seemed very bumpy on the steeper bits, is this normal?

I first went down the Arrete piste in poor visibility (heavy fog) in April. A skidoo came out of nowhere and I froze in panic. Fortunately he saw me and went round. I'm not so keen on very narrow pistes like that particularly with the children in tow. However we loved the Grand Massif in general.
Whoyton1 - Hope the rest of your week in Morillon goes well.

Off piste most of the day again, only in les carroz area, still finding fresh powder, but much much busier, pistes are not particularly pleasant at times as so many people, and some big lift queues.North facing stuff still holding nice light powder well. Corbalanche in particular is very pleasant if you like bumps. However I got very cold today, even if it is nice and sunny. Did a bit of beacon practice and got really really cold!
Daughter in her competition class had some rather unpleasant French guy lose his temper when she trod on his skis in a lift queue and so he walloped her with his poles and held her back from going through the gate, she now has bruises in various places on her back from his pole tips. She said he was calling her a word that sounded like moose

carroz, So - tomorrow you will be looking for him and carrying your sharpest poles! Hate people like that. How can you not step on someones skis when its so busy. We all try not to, but it inevitable.

pam w, Her instructor was up the top, they were doing circuits practising slalom. She had a really good lesson (all 5 hours of it) as she is much better at GS and slalom is just starting to click, came back from the lesson all smiles and it does not really seem to have upset her, she said she was pleased he didn't batter her race skis!! but to effectively attack a child (she is tall, but obviously a very young teenager) is a bit weird.

carroz, thanks for all the updates, I'm going to Flaine on Saturday for a week so I have been watching your posts with interest! How are the pistes looking at the moment? I mainly do blues and easy reds. I had a bit of a panic last week at the lack of snow but seems like things have improved since then.
I'd better keep an eye out for pole man next week as I always tread on skis in the lift queue by accident.....if I see him I will be sure to bash him round the head with a ski on behalf of your daughter!

Laurs234, Pistes are fine, if rather busy so get well bumped up, few patches between bumps with the odd stone, but generally its very good, and its cold so snow is keeping very well. Its much less busy early, the new year crowd don't seem to get up that early. They have been making snow, so there are a few rock hard bits in places.
Got to prep the skis for tomorrow now, a day of gates for her skis wears the edges.

Wot carroz, said is pretty much the same at Samoens and I've never seen a resort as busy. The queue for the GME was probably 100m but moved resonably quickly. As we approached the turnstile a number of French decided to push in so they got a gob full from Mrs Basil and I. What I find amazing is that they look at you as if they are in the right.
I went over to LC to catch up with my daughter and thought conditions there were quite good, getting over via Perce Neige was awful though, coming down from the tete was so busy and with the cut up pistes people were all over the place. I skied Combe and saw the massive hole/crater they have created. Very cold now too.

But their concept of a queue is quite different from ours. If there's even a small gap they assume you're not in a hurry and will push in. Rather like a London taxi....

billb, Not in this case. Cannot believe they thought the 200 people behind them were not in a hurry.
under a new name, I have, Naples city centre. Not the same thing, there is a definite structure to thier driving once you understand it, in fact I would say a certain element of respect by "joining in" rather than dithering.

Those queues sound intolerable. Are there still a lot of closed pistes at lower levels of the GM, forcing people to crowd up into the Flaine bowl?

pam w, all low pistes in les carroz are open, lift queue to get out of village this morning about 10 minutes, yes its busy, but not that bad, early this morning did not queue for anything.
December 31st
Epic day, Gers bowl shut, as is descent into it from veret (drag shut) this morning, you can see the avalanches from the top of grand vans, its very very dangerous at the moment. Even quite a big slip just to left of tormaline.
So went to L'Arbaron, from bottom of tormaline, bus from grand van lift up to top of col de st pierre. Then walk across the golf course to top of L'Arbaron, discovered my avalung is bloody useless as a ski carrying back pack, its carries the skis too low, so back of your boots hit the tails of the skis...really stupid thing.
Top of L'arbaron is quite steep, but then its mellow, and was the walk worth it, oh yes, perfect powder, with only about 3 tracks down, powder up to top of boot, bliss. It faces west so snow is different to gers. Then long skate on a closed blue run across the bridge across the flaine road to the middle of timalets. Did timalets and plein soleil a few times, there are quite a few stones etc showing on timalets (half of it shut for competitions) and then home, bit tired......

pam w, Just SWOT I think. Only 20 min queue at 0910 today and they had laid on a jazz band to entertain the troops as they shuffled forward. They may also been there to stop people pushing in.

carroz, Do you know why the 'Lanche' Ski lift was closed today? Made everything hell as everyone from Morillon and Les Carroz were squeezed in to one 2 weather 'Airon' Chair lift which was entertaining to say the least!

Whoyton1, Its often closed, it is quite exposed. Gentiane was open this morning, further down than l'airon, goes over corbalanche black run up to tete des saix.

January 1st
Went to flaine early, rather foggy at the top of DMC, and quite a few bare (ish) patches and stones on the way there.
Skied Gers (closed, but with guide) did the lift line down as it will be more stable and then cascades.
Snow in gers was not particularly nice, windblown with a thick crust, it was really hard work and had 1 huge fall when the tips decided they would prefer diving in...opps.
L' Arbaron was probably now the same as its was windy last night
Cascades on way down was icy and stoney, but not as bad as expected. Views were stunning, the pole from gers base to cascades was exhausting
Bus back to samoens, was not that busy at 1600, but tete des saix was a zoo.
Timalets has more bare bits and rocks showing
and that was the end of the day........more snow please!!

Whilst I love a trip to challenge myself in the Gers bowl… last year we decided (for the first time) to head our of the bottoms towards the restaurant (and then onto Cascades). The restaurant my be a lovely little stop (for the views alone which are wonderful) - but that "pole" after a couple of runs in Gers is a killer… never to be repeated I suspect.
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
The run from gers to the restaurant had not been pisted, it was natural, so the last bit of it (uphill) was er knackering! The people who ran it have moved apparently.
Gers was very bleak and wind blown, the off piste bowl had large patches of stones where the snow had been blown off and a number of avalanches.

It's raining in flaine now. At least the roads are clear. Really quite warm, lots of snow melting around town. I agree it was wet and horrible this morning. Pistes are looking better now but still need a few big dumps

Woke up this morning to rain in Flaine. All the snow that fell last night has been washed away. Roads are clear for those arriving and leaving today but conditions for skiing do not look good aat resort level. Hopefully there will be lots of fresh snow higher up.
Been out here for a week now (home tomorrow) and have had very varied conditions. It has been a bit of luck finding the best conditions, sometimes it has been the Flaine bowl, other times Carroz/Morrilion sectors. Some of the best snow has been around the Aujon drag and to the right of Mephisto, although there are still many holes that are waiting for the unwary!
Since starting this the rain has stopped and I can see the top of the DMC and the Aup de Veran lifts so am hopeful for some fresh powder higher up.

Saturday 4th Jan
Went out at about 9.30 am, rain had stopped but very slushy snow, thenit started again at about 10.15am, and didn't stop, corbalanche was brilliant even in the rain. By about 1.30pm we had got totally soaked, even my best hestra gloves had given up!!
Timalets was very very soft and loads of bare patches on the way down, only ok bit was the competition area as its tougher snow (read icy!)
A40 on the way back was rain in buckets, and its raining now in chalon
Back on Thursday....hopefully cham meteo is right and it will snow loads tonight (in GM...not where i am!!)

carroz, I agree, yesterday was the wettest I have ever been whilst skiing.
Last night the temps did drop, we noticed a freeze at village level when walking back to the apartment about 9:30.
The result of that is the pleasant view from my window right now of at least 6 inches at resort level.
There is more snow forecast this morning with the due to appear in the afternoon.
So we will have a lazy morning and hope for decent vis later on.
