mistermouse,
Impressive stuff. How good a lighting system do you need to MB at night and is it much more difficult/dangerous than through the day.

T Bar, Its much more invigorating, your senses seem more awake and the woods more spooky. The light i use is an old 10w one by cateye but i'm debating on a new system for £170 by lumicycle. It would mean spending some of the money i have put aside for a new kitchen

mistermouse, I need to invest in some decent illumination and am thinking of getting a mountain bike. I have a road bike and a pretty crappy hybrid at the moment but have really enjoyed mountian biking when I have done it. Is there much work in keeping the groupset clean, I live in the west of scotland and it is wet here.

mistermouse, hubby used to night ride, but his friend moved away, so things are rather tamer now. They trailquested a couple of times too. Me, I'm not doing any exercise at the moment, and I know I should, but when you don't get home until 6.30, have family to feed, etc etc, it;s hard to find time or motivation.

T Bar, Yeah , mud does clog things up alot so the solution i use for winter rides is a 'singlespeed'.No groupset to worry about, i run a gear of 34/18 , its the dark side of mtb
http://www.on-one.co.uk/ is a good source . i also have a singlespeed cross bike

mistermouse, check out http://www.cycle-promotions.co.uk , these people have one-day sales around the UK and often have what appears to be good lighting systems at good prices - a lot less that the £170 you mention. I have bought a few items from their sales local to me and have not been disappointed, but I have not needed to buy lights.
Their next sale near you and me is Egham on 12 Feb 2006, so not ideal for early ski season training.

There's a little part of Lincolnshire not a million miles away from me that Paul Mason may have a certain affinity with.

mistermouse,
Have you heard what they are like with Rohloff hub, at my age I don't know if I could manage a single speed, but the hub option looks a little pricey.

T Bar, i would love to have a Rohloff hub and wrap it in a Thorn frame but i dont konw if i could sacrifice one of my bikes to get one

Just found this thread. Following an earlier line, I must be a bit of a masocist as I cycle in the evening's still, got a neat little circuit that's just over 6miles, which when the temperatures as it has been the last week or so is as about as much as I can stand, do that couple of nights, plus badminton on Tuesdays and a longer cycle up towards Ilkley or Wetherby way on a Sunday monrning (16-20miles as my fancy takes me). Last season the weather was really good to me and I cycled most Sunday mornings, come h*ll or high water.

Hi again mistermouse, just got to the plot on single gear bikes. I know your tag line says Surrey but how flat is it down there to be able to cope with a single gear or is it just about putting more force into ... up here I hill's aren't optional and to go further than 4 miles I've either got hills out or hills back in again, the only people you see here with single gear bikes are posties!

stevew, I actually like the hills, and there are enough around here to give you a workout. i've got a friend who is really got at route planning and comes up with rides that are doable on a singlespeed. there were three of us singlespeeding on sunday , the routew had a really long climb but at the top was a tea and cake shop

IncogSkiSno,
RICE is rest, ice, compression ,elevation; standard treatment for sporting injuries. Meant to help reduce the inflammation.
PS I am obviously a slower typist.
