Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@endoman, Laughing Laughing now now.

My guess is that these are all kids from the Val' Club des Sports. Especially as Clement Noel came up through the ranks there. Hopefully Mr Angus will be along later with more details of the day's events.

Town is very happy.

Olivia had her face painted and I was certainly up to watch both runs live.

Poor old Dave though. He gave it his all and he said he’d attack which he did.

Will give report later on this eve.

Snowy day here today as can see in the vids.

Not the best weather.... but quite frankly who cared today

As mentioned and talked about above the big event of the day started early.... I slept on the sofa last night and set my alarm so I could watch the first run of the slalom.... pity Dave made the one mistake as he was definitely going to be in the top 5 if it werent for that one little mistake! The second run he was much better! Anyway it was a fascinating first run. I rolled over and went back to sleep to be able to watch the 2nd run over breakfast.

The kids were so excited to see it all pan out live and after Clement won Olivia was excited to go club and had the French flag painted on her face. Talk about inspiring a generation a win like that!

Meanwhile at the Club they had arranged pastries etc for the early risers and there were a good number of kids and parents watching on the big screen (the Club HQ is under the Sun Bar). So when Clement won there was champagne spraying and all sorts.

Ben was having a day off skis today whilst Clare took Olivia to club (I wasnt best pleased as the buses were all out of timing this am too).... a LOAD of people will have missed the start of their ski lesson etc this am as the queue to get into town was huge even down here in La Daille.

I met my nice lady and we did the greens and blues atop Bellevarde and she not only really loved the morning but made massive improvements. What I was most impressed with was the fact the weather was pretty average and snowy and OK vis but certainly not a great day... it got worse this afternoon / evening thats for sure!

Meanwhile in recognition of Clement and his legacy to the Club des Sports Val etc all the kids and coaches did a descent right at the beginning of the morning down the lower part of the Face de Bellevarde in a long snake... the kids all had French flags and the coaches were ringing cow bells. Quite a sight!

With the weather getting worse I took shelter under the Sun Bar for lunch and then met my afternoon girls once again! They were rather hung over and with the weather it was going to be an interesting afternoon. Anyway we blasted around the Solaise trying (and failing) to outsmart the weather all afternoon long as big banks of thick cloud and snow would move in and out. Anyway we had some tricky runs to fit in and the weather was not helping at all... by the time we got high to try and get up to better vis conditions at the Col the wind was starting to get up so the up and over was closed... all we could do was ski back down to Fornet and bus it back to town for a lap on the Face to finish!

Anyway nice day all in all!

After skiing Ben was excited as he had spent the day with Clares mum and Olivia was happy after her day with Club - all the kids were still buzzing and inspired. We all headed to the Garage for a few drinks and a meal - I do like it in there. Finally we got home about 1930 so I am just tieing up a few ends before getting to bed as I am shattered.

Weather wise it should be similar tomorrow before the sun coming out on Friday with some luck!

Great result for Clement Noel and even better for Strolz, what a dream this Olympics has been for him. Can't imagine how proud his dad must be! Can't get my lad off the Xbox to come down to Tamworth with me Toofy Grin

Weather was not as expected

It was the normal crazy start to the day but Olivia was having a morning off skiing (she went out skiing with her cousins in the afternoon including some hot choc stops and then dinner with them at the Petit Danois - what a special afternoon - when she finally got home this evening she was BEYOND tired!

Anyway the weather was not that promising looking out the window first thing - as forecast it was sort of raining / snowing but the daytime temps would definitely send the snow to rain... it was also rather overcast. Anyway with the forecast as it was I put my trench coat on... I was ready for what might come.

M turned up on time so we headed up the Belvarde and what immediately was apparent was that the wind was WAY worse than anticipated. I was shocked how windy it was - wasnt expecting that. Looking at the lift openings it was apparent that they had decided to keep the green triangle area shut down for the day - partly affected by the wind situation as they did not want anyone straying into avalanche territory or getting stuck that way if the winds shut the lifts down which would mean the avalanche prone Santons would be the only option down - not viable! But also the Marmottes was struggling with the wind (so was the Loyes Express too) and so too was the Mont Blanc HOWEVER amazingly (I'm still confused why it turned out that way in the end!) the Tommeuse was open and so was the Fresse etc which meant people were mixing between Val and Tignes.... I didnt trust the link to stay open so didnt want to drop Tignes side.

With M we battled the wind and stayed high as much as possible but I did want to show her the route down to La Daille the 'sensible' way. By the end of the morning she was STOKED with how much ground she had covered in the few sessions with me and also how far she had come.... I left her to enjoy her lunch and afternoon fun and games at the Folie. I had been invited for a yummy lunch at the Peau du Vache but unfortunately with the lift closures etc etc I could not make it in decent time so settled for a nice lunch at Chevallot with some colleagues!

By lunchtime the sun was coming out amazingly as the snow / rain never really materialised.... however the wind was unabating and there was no way more was going to open up.

I met my guys at the PDV as they finished their lunch and we set off. There was an immediate issue in that the older girl is having big boot issues at the moment and with the soft / bumpy and getting slushy snow it was hammering her feet evermore. The snow was certainly 'slow' snow and that makes it physically hard work even at the best of times. Anyway we took it quite casually as I didnt want to go too extreme / fast etc. A trip into Tignes Le Lac as well as a run through the park when it opened a couple of times, a ski to La Daille was all part of the afternoon. We finished with a lap on Rogoney (north facing slopes seems to have held up better) and then it was time to head home (I still need to write up some notes for the older girls GCSE PE content but I can do that over the next few days).

Clares mum collected Ben from his ski lesson whilst Olivia was out with the cousins so Clare and I actually got a couple of hours at home to ourself.... bliss! When Olivia finally came home it was a quick shower and bed for her and Ben was not too far behind!

Tomorrow I am working in the am on a long mornings booking before probably coming home for a chilled afternoon as I have my normal half term family arriving for a week in town and that is a 7 day x all day booking so will need some down time!

Meanwhile we are all still loving watching all the Olympic sports - awesome.

Weather came good

I didnt have the kids to get out the door at all today as Clares mum helped out so much this am which meant it was a casual start to the day.

Anyway I met my lovely lady for her lesson... this particular lady unfortunately had not had much luck this week getting stuck into her skiing because of the weather and all that. Being nervous I think she had only managed to fit in a couple of days skiing and no lessons during the week as she had not been able to book any lesson until today. The week had been a bit of challenge as this is only her 2nd week of skiing.

The plan had been to get her confidence back and this was a sort of last ditch attempt to get her skiing again as she was on the verge of wanting to give up unfortunately. Anyway we warmed up with a couple on the Village before heading up Solaise and developing the technique on the magic carpet before some work on the Madelaine. A mid session water stop as it was sooooo hot was needed too. However I sensed near the end that with her knee being sore and her getting tired that risking downloading / uploading her in order to ski her to the Folie would not be a good idea. Instead I told her to ignore her family and friends pressure to ski to the Folie after I left her so I hope she took my advice... I basically said 'finish the week on a high' and take away +ve memories forward for your next session.

So it was very hot so after that I headed to get Chevallot to treat myself to lunch and then headed home. It was so warm that I was able to keep the balcony door open for a couple of hours this pm - incredible! Clares mum was at home with me all afternoon so the two of us became curling fans for the afternoon - what a match!

At 1600 we headed into town to collect Olivia from club at the end of a tiring but fun week for her and then went to see Ben get his 1* award at the end of his week too! Awesome week!

We have then had a quiet evening at home. Tomorrow (despite the best efforts of the storm in the UK) my normal 2nd half term week clients arrive... plenty to rearranged plans on the travel front today but I think they will finally arrive before breakfast time tomorrow!

Talking of travel the roads this weekend are once again going to be horrifically bad... 79000 cars are forecast coming up and down and there were even severe traffic jams this evening as people attempt to beat the worst of the traffic tomorrow. Tomorrow..... well good luck as it will horrendous. I dont think the weather should play too much of a hand in making things bad but be careful as there could be early snow tomorrow morning for early leavers making things tricky perhaps!

I forgot to snap any pics today so will attempt to use something suitable from Radio Val.

welshflyer - yes I know have been riveted by it.... I always love watching the Olympics its always so cool! Was following the match today on text updates.... I'm going to try and watch the last couple of ends for the ladies match tonight by sleeping on the sofa again tonight! BETTER fact for you... I was born in a place called Irvine.... down the road from Irvine is Girvan (where my mum is from) and the main island off the coast from there which dominates the whole coastline along the Ayrshire coast there in Scotland is a place called Aisla Craig - that is where curling stones all traditionally come from due to the particular type of granite mined there!

Colder but also nice to have them back

It was a relatively easy start to the day today as Clares mum had both the kids today as there was no kids club or anything. Clare got sorted and headed to work whilst I set off a little earlier than normal - to check the post boxes and then do a quick live update on Instagram to my followers on there (@SteveAngusSnow).

The weather was funny as it was cloudy but quite cold but there was only a couple of cms of new snow about. It wanted to be a sort of nothing day. Anyway I met the P family after 2 long years without seeing them because of Covid and we decided that the plan was to all ski together (despite some of them arriving very late last night / early hours of this morning because of our friend Storm Eunice and cancelled flights from the UK!) and find our ski legs. With the clouds hanging at the height they were I thought there might be a chance of breaking through the clouds so I thought maybe heading to the Grand Motte would give us scope to have a really nice day out.

So we mixed up a full day of refreshing our memory on technique with a few drills and plenty of mileage to enjoy the mountains. I have to say that it was a lot colder than I thought it was going to be. However the Genepy piste that comes down from the Motte was in stunning condition - it really is a lovely run that and we ended up doing it a couple of times.

With lunch at the Panoramique (the self service in there really has improved the offering in there big time) we continued our ski about and ultimately did around the world before heading home.

So I have left my skis in the ski locker at the hotel - partly because tomorrow I am snowboarding with some of them but also wanting to have a base for my kit there for the week!

This evening we have enjoyed a really nice family meal together and I'm hoping that tomorrow brings some decent weather before horrendous weather comes our way on Monday and we get a real top up of snow by the looks of things. For those that were on the road today then I hope it was not too bad a days travel but I fear it won't have been easy.

So there we are folks - another short update today.

Notice the bottom of the Double M piste in the background and part of it has been netted off... they are preparing for freestyle events coming up there and there will also be Freeride World Tour events in Tignes in early March too - going to be a busy few weeks for events in Tignes!

Porsche have installed this sort of show room next to the Christiana hotel this Winter - apart from a few cars being parked up I dont think much really happens there.

They will open as much as possible.... usually it is the effect of wind that is the decider. However it is IMPOSSIBLE to really guess apart from local guesses like top areas of Fornet etc being closed or trying to keep people away from runs like Santons etc because of avalanche risk. Apart from that I suspect the situation will change regularly tomorrow dependent on how things develop.

A very nice day all around

With both Clare and her mum off today and the kids having a lazy day it was just me that needed to up and out. The sun was shining and there was lots of people eager to get skiing. With the forecast as it was for the next couple of days I wanted to make the most of today. Further to that C was really keen to give boarding another go as it had been a few years since he last did it with me. C's girlfriend S wanted to give it a go so they could both do it together so I treated it as a complete beginners boarding lesson. Little by little we worked our way through the beginners progression and onto more advanced things all the time on the magic carpet in the glorious sun. It was a great morning and we worked our way through a long morning to take a late lunch! Boy it was hot though and I took 2 layers off.

I must have walked up and down the carpet about a 1000 times this morning so by lunchtime we were all really hungry! C decided that a proper sit down meal at Gigi's at the Refuge Solaise would be the best way forward and because it was now 1400 we got a table easily. We enjoyed a really nice lunch in the sun and I must say the Veal Millanaise with Polenta was YUMMY!

By the end of the day we were happily linking turns together and they are now ready for a chair lift ride....

I got back home and the kids and adults had had an amazing day with swimming / lunch in the sun / a movie and plenty of fun under their belts. So after clearing up the house (it was a mess) got the kids to bed. This week they are spending the week with their respective friends at the Village des Enfants so that will be really fun for them! Clares mum heads back home tomorrow (thanks EVER so much for all your help this week - that extra pair of hands really lightens the load that is for sure!) so it'll be a few more days of hard work before the pressure eases into next week a little! Talking of the week ahead the Parisians are in town for the next 2 weeks so expect arrogance / jeans and even more aggressive and impatient queue barging etc. Of course the Brits are in town as well in large numbers which means it will be VERY busy the next 2 weeks before easing off into March but even then March is looking busy... if you are getting out here and haven't booked slots then DO SO NOW.

Otherwise not much else to report apart from the bad weather coming in later tonight and into tomorrow - not so sure we are going to get a nice day tomorrow but we shall see... this will last through for a couple of days.

Wild but worth it

It was hard trying to get back into the swing of things this morning with Clare needing to get out the door at a very decent time as well as Clares mum packing her things to hit the road and also me needing to get both the kids to the Village. The weather at first light was snowy but a punchy wind but compared to what it was forecast to be it was looking OK.

Anyway I headed up with the kids and dropped them off. Keeping an eye on the Val app / Lumi Plan (that drives the official date on whether lifts might open or not etc) as well as the 'word on the grapevine network' and various our 'local knowledge' sources... I could see that the funi and Daille gondola were open as well as cabins on the Olympic and of course the Bellevarde Express was running and the nursery slope lifts. The wind soon got worse and as I sipped tea with the family in their hotel (the boys were all a bit hungover this morning!) it meant that things did shut down higher up (saw some amazing video footage at the top of the funi - looked quite wild up there but I have certainly seen worse!) and options narrowed. By the time we were finally suited and booted in boarding stuff the Village and Rogoney were now closed which was bad news.... however when these things happen there is always a carte blanche echo around the resort and resignation that 'everything is shut and skiing is impossible etc'. Its not quite true - as firstly you can always improve skiing / boarding whatever your level on any terrain if you are prepared to give it a go and work on the correct things and secondly things can change quickly. In this case within 10 mins the Village lift was open again and we profited from minimal lift queues (sometimes it was a little longer but nothing mega bad on the whole one the course of the day!) and winds that were generally behind us going up the lift. It was also S's first time on a board on a chairlift so there was learning to be had!

We had a REALLY fun morning and the snow was lovely.... Little by little people gave up but 99% of lessons and punters profited from the learning opportunity id say that stuck it out. By lunchtime we needed to find somewhere to refuel (in fact C had been telling me he was hungry all morning but he should have eaten more breakfast than the 20 croissants he ate!!!!!!!!!). Anyway I told them there was no point in trying the Sun Bar or Bananas as they would be both heaving so instead we tried Le Garage (45 min wait)... then Quiksilver was rammed so we tried Fondue Factory - we had a 10 min wait to get a table but then had an amazing lunch even though it was the smallest table and S had cheese fondue, me meat fondue and C a raclette - it was hilarious as there was NO space on the table and S literally had the basket of bread on her lap it was that tight. Anyway leaving an hour later all stuffed we noted that the weather had not improved but we were eager to give it more time as it was genuinely quite fun.

We did some more laps on the Rogoney and then called it a day. So all in all id say it was a good day. Lets see what tomorrow brings as there will be serious amount of PIDA work to do in the morning before things open thats for sure. I collected the kids from Village - they had had a ball of a day indoors (no skiing for them this week) and then came home.

The usual evening routine for the kids then followed and once again we are back on track - yay!

So lets hope we have a good day tomorrow as the weather should be better but it will take them a while to get things opened up thats for sure!

In other news a friend of mine along with a colleague and others have finally finished piecing together this amazing new off piste guide book. It'll not only be a good read, good to help a charity but also great to upskill knowledge wise. Check it out.

Also looks like the Club des Sports and Val are planning a homecoming parade / party etc for Clement Noel on the 1st March... so if you are in town then then look out for details of that. Olivia is excited as he will come to the school with his medal no doubt!

Hello,

First post here so please go gently….

We go to Val next week for a week; mix of skiers and boarders. First time there for any of us.

A few of the group are looking at lessons for beginner and intermediate ability. Not impressed by big Ski Schools in other resorts in the past, we were looking for an independent person or persons to help.

Had a look at various Google searches and Facebook etc but nothing coming up; just directions to larger schools.

Hoping someone on here knows of someone or could kindly point us in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi there and welcome.

For a mixture of value, decent teaching and minimum class sizes - Evo 2 is a good choice.

If prepared to pay more, these are even better:

Progression Ski (Aaron Cassells, Woody, Ken Smith)
Mountain Masters (Simon Mc Combe, Claire Burns, Dave Cowell, Mark Jones, Claire Angus, Rupert Goldring)
The Development Centre (Steve Angus)
New Gen
BASS.

Just replied on the other thread but drop me a pm and I’ll let you know what options there are next week. I teach skiing and boarding in Val by the way so happy to advise. Thanks. Steve

Nice report! Any guesses which lifts will be first to open and what time does it make sense to get there?

Gotta know the way it works (in more than one way!)

There was a layer of clouds over the resort this morning but the winds had died right back and it was always going to be a MASSIVELY better day on the weather front than yesterday! I dropped the kids at the meet point and then headed to collect A for todays session. He is a tall 17 year old but a really quiet and friendly chap but always up for learning which is nice! The expectation in the resort was off the scale and literally 99.9% of people queueing up to head up the mountains to make the most of today after yesterdays late of options!

The avalanche risk was 4 and they had been blasting from first light and there was lots of movement all over the place - juicy conditions!

The first problem we had was that A seemed to lose his skies... yes I know we dont really know what happened. I think the concierge got the skis out the ski locker and put them outside the hotel and then someone must have picked up the wrong skis as they were gone by the time 15 mins had passed and we went to leave the hotel.... mystery! Anyway they are rental skis so they will come back I'm sure of it. We ended up heading to the rental shop to get a new set of skis before heading off.

I saw just how crazy the queues were for the Olympic (didnt help that Bellevarde was not initially open either!) and Solaise lifts and told A that it would be best if we kept walking. So we ended up busing it to Fornet (only take 10 mins on the bus) and then we had to wait for just 1 cable car up to go before we got on the next one... there was no queue for the Vallon either so we were on the Col within about 30 mins! I used lots of local sources of info and past experiences to know that the up and over would unlikely to be opening anytime soon until they could rope from the top pylon to blast the top slopes.... this would mean that the fornet would stay nice and quiet for a long time. Also I knew from the offset that the Cema lift being open would be a good sign that they would defiantely be able to open the glacier area. The problem with bad weather like we had is that lifts (perhaps just the sensors on the top of the pylons) can get damaged so its not just the avalanche danger and digging the lifts out etc that the problem is with!

Anyway it was obvious the Cascades Express would be opening as they had it moving which is a great sign! It would work it was just the pisteurs needed to do their signage and make everything safe for opening etc.... this could take a little while. So A and I did a few laps waiting our time and then were right there the second the Cascades opened so ended up having endless pow turns on piste lapping around and around for hours on end - literally utilising the Cascades chair. The snow was very good actually! With the up and over not opening and with some wind up there lots of people decided or could not get there - it was darn quiet up there - lucky us!

We had an amazing morning. We did a couple of laps on the pistes too as they were quiet and excellent! I was trying to educate A from a distance as to the dangers of 'skier creep' and being lulled into a false sense of security as well as common mistakes people make safety wise off piste e.g. skiing slopes all at the same time or creeping further and further out into the danger zone etc! I was looking across towards the area by the Combe de Geant near the entrance to the Col Pers and talking about lone skiers without kit going further and further out and onto steeper and steeper slopes etc and not thinking about what was above / underneath them etc etc etc..... on one of our laps the dangers came true and a slide was set off on people below a long skier without gear. I posted the following on social media as it hopefully is self explanatory! Lucky persons involved and I was most impressed when I rushed to the pisteurs hut atop the glacier to tell them and they immediately sprung into action sending someone to investigate / do an initial area transceiver search!

Number relate to the numbers in the photos above fyi. "Anatomy of an avalanche ‘a cote’ to the Combe Du Geant closed piste @valdisere @valdisere_ski_patrol 1130 22/2/22 in the fornet sector via ignorance of heuristic factors (skier creep). 1) many skiers well spaced out being led off piste on a closed piste 2) bunched skiers cutting much higher leads to 3) a lone skier taking a riskier line then 4) an even riskier line by a lone skier (circled) with NO off piste rescue kit. 15 mins later the pack mentality meant more persons were skiing in the area of line 2 when skier 5 (black line) takes an even more aggressive line right under the rocks and sets a large (category 2) avalanche off obliterating tracks of skier 3 and other helpless skiers below. @valdisere_ski_patrol called to do an initial search (zig zag pattern photo) with transceiver to see if anyone buried under snow. Luckily all out alive and unscathed and no signal detected. Being lulled into thinking it’s safe because other tracks exist and others have ‘gotten away’ with it doesn’t mean it’s a good call. Luckily it wasn’t worse. The pull of creeping further and further out into the untracked snow was the mistake here."

Anyway that was the drama this morning.

Talking of avalanche things.... I noticed in the Hors Limite shop today (great shop just about opposite and down from Dicks Tea Bar) and great to support a local independent shop the following sign up.... good to know:

Anyway at lunchtime we headed to the Signal restaurant. First time I have been in there this season... its now (maybe just for this season I am not sure!) it is table service for the self service style food in there. Great lamb and croziflette - yummy. We bumped into C and S in there so all ended up eating and then skiing together in the afternoon!

After a few more laps up on the glacier (it was busier in the afternoon as the up and over was finally open) we headed home via the Foret piste which was in great condition. On the way into the run I came across a little vole that was trying to make a run for it across the piste... so I rescued it and placed it back into a pile of snow so hopefully it will be safe!

Finally on the 1/3/22 and for the home coming of Clement Noel they have announced that 1915 on the Face there will be a parade / welcome home event - be there or be square! Hopefully my kids will be up for that!!!!

Stay tuned for more tomorrow. Oh and Clare and I are out for dinner tomorrow evening so not sure when might post tomorrow night or not.

Anyone for a queue?

Hi Steve, a stupid question perhaps, but is the traffic likely to be any less this Saturday? I see it's still a half term that includes Paris, though all the Brits will have finished by then. Unusually, Mr P and I are driving down to the 3V on a Saturday during school hols. Eek! I'm trying to persuade him we should try and get away on Friday if we can.

Go Friday. Will be very heavy traffic Saturday as another week of Parisian holidays. At least try and get 2/3 way here Friday night then leave VERY early Saturday am for the last push OR aim to arrrive VERY late Saturday night instead.
