Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A bit of rain during the night gave about 1cm fresh snow above 1800m (which didn't turn the grassy bits white).

Early start from Champery as I had to drive down to Aigle to collect a latecomer at lunchtime.

Firm corduroy for a few runs then softening fast. Choice of aspect was key but most of the skiing up to 11.30 was pretty good.

That said the whole of the Swiss side between the run down from Mossettes over to Champoussin and Morgins looked pretty well finished.

Up to Pre La Joux after picking up Paul then skied around Cornebois and Linga from 14.00 . Snow variable and in high traffic areas
soft scraped off snow and firm (wouldn't really say icy) base meant multiple wipeouts amongst the beginners on the slopes.

Early starts the order of the day.

Avoriaz still decent. Went over to Coupe du Monde first thing - very firm but not really icy. Arare in great shape for fast carves. By the time we got to the Fornet bowl it was getting a bit softer but still OK. Bumps everywhere off piste.

Back to Rochassons ridge for a fine picnic. After 1400 it was a bit grim - very soft and scraped.

Quite busy in Avoriaz today -presume everyone from Morzine was up there.

Well I dont know the Morzine or Les Gets area at all, I'm afraid but if you are looking for nice cruisy blues and reds then I would thoroughly reccomend Avoriaz, Lidaretts and Plaine Dranse...

I'm pretty sure you would get the Proclou chair up to Avoriaz and then can ski around there. Turning left down to the Prolay run is a blue into Lindaretts where you can get the Chaux Fleurie chair up to the top of the Chatel ski area (you will need the PDS pass for all of this by the way) There is a RED down into the Plaine Dranse area which provides some lovely blues and reds.

If you go right into Avoriaz town and ski (slide) down under the tunnel (you might want to stop in the park on your way) then you can get over to the Fornet area which is high enough to last a bit longer in the day and provides some nice blues and reds. I can recommend Arare as a lovely run and if you like a bit of fun off piste then the Marmottes area is awesome.

I was in Avoriaz last week and, despite lack of snow, there's still plenty of skiing available. Morzine and Les Gets are very bare and most people are heading to Avoriaz.

Best conditions early morning are in the sunny Fornet area. The runs down to Marmottes and Lindaret are also in good shape. Anywhere on the Swiss side is a virtual no-go area - until there's more snow. The Swiss wall was closed on Friday.

The runs down to Les Prodains are a bit icy, but still quite skiable. By 2pm anything below 2000m was turning very slushy. The runs through Avoriaz centre are being kept open for the time being, but very soon they will hose them down and return them to tarmac.

Boarders will not be impressed because there's moguls everywhere; me, I love em!

OK, as I'm out for the weekend on Thursday night and have therefore been consulting just about every website there is for snow forecasts, I am going to go out on a limb and predict the following:

Its going to snow all day on Thursday above 1600m and come the weekend the temps are going to drop off and it'll be a lovely weekend for all...

There. I said it. snowHead

Half day today as Paul had a meeting in Nyon this afternoon and then flying home (ski shop owner comment - "Il faut annuler la reunion" - about right!).

Headed straight over to Lindarets then over Mosettes to the Swiss side. Bothearly runs were firm corduroy and great for fast carves.

Swiss side was soft below about 1800m from 09.30. I suspect the freezing level was no lower than 1500m last night.

Miuch a I enjoy it I wouldn't spend time over there until we get a good dump (might even be December!)

Came over to Fornet bowl (swiss wall was closed). Snow in good shape at 10.30 down to Avoriaz.

Up to Coupe du Monde which was good until the last pitch past the restaurant where it got a bit soft.

Finished off back above Plain Dranse and still OK up high at 13.00.

Still not much ice - firm in the morning, then scraped and finally slushy.

Kitenski, I didn't ski any muddy messes today though there was plenty of slush later on.

Was the morzineweather report from Morzine/Les Gets (can't see the video on my Blackberry)? I guess the bit of extra altitude makes the difference

Steady rain in Chatel at the moment and has been for most of the night.

Can't see any sign of a snowline. Then again can't see anything much at all at the moment. One of the minor peaks we walk to in the summer is around 1600m and has no snow on it.

My guess is that the forecast was correct and it will be 1800m before it turns to snow. It was 5C in the village at 19.00 last night so on the rough rule of thumb of 1C per 100m that puts the freezing level at 1700m.

I don't know where Morzineweather found a muddy mess in Avoriaz. The snow there and above was still OK at lunchtime..

DJL, the muddy mess in question is at the bottom of the park jumps on the way to the tunnel under the carpark which leads back to super morzine

In that case I confirm it is correct! The whole of the area over to Super Morzine has looked grim all week. Can't imagine why anyone would choose to ski there and it is certainly not representative of Avoriaz as a whole.

Still raining and can't see the snowline. Will post when I do.

Just been presented with tea in bed. Late start/delayed decision on Verbier

Anyone ski in the PDS today? We had a day off yesterday with the poor visibility and rain at village level and went to Verbier today to benefit from the fresh snow up top.

How was it this side? We were planning to fit in a morning in Pre La Joux/ Avoriaz tomorrow before we head for the airport

It was my brother's last day in Les Gets today. I don't think he's had the greatest of weeks and said he feels sorry for anyone going out this weekend. Very warm and slushy was the verdict.

He also said the Irish bar was shut on St Patrick's Day!

We went over to Chatel Linga first thing this morning - sun out above the clouds, clear blue skies, and all wonderful -till about 11.45 when there were huge queues everywhere. The run back down to Lindarets was just not my cup of tea! Drove then to La Grande Turche where we had a couple of runs as everything over the top to Graydon is now closed, but very relaxing away from the crowds and lunch in the sun. Just had supper with friends who were skiing in Les Gets today and they had a very pleasant morning.

Managed a morning before heading for the airport. Snow very variable including yesterdays bumps which had been rained on covered in fresh snow.

The snow will surely help but by the time we got back to the car at Linga it was raining and Chatel had turned Green again
