Probably about a foot since yesterday, looking at our post box. It had stopped overnight/early morning, but tipping down again now in Les Gets. Looks as if tonight is going to be really cold.

davejsy, La Grand Terche is a lovely little area - I only found it last seaason after 20 years skiing in the PDS. Please note it doesn't link to the rest of the PDS (though it can be skied on the same pass) but as mentioned it is only a short drive to Montriond, Prodains or Morzine. I would think it is perfect for absolute beginners. Gondola up from the village to a little plateau with two very easy drag lifts and a gentle slope. ESF are active so you can get lessons there - it looks a lot less pressured than some of the "big" resorts. One downside for beginners is that when they want to advance from the nusery slope on the plateau there is a pretty steep drag lift to access the next set of slopes. There is a superb restaurant at the plateau (La Licorne - run by a Brummie called Richard who has moved out there - very hospitable - try the Croute Savoyarde!) The skiing is interesting - several nice red runs and if the Circuit du Roc d'Enfer is open that is fun with two 5 km runs forming the loop. If you are experienced skiers you could do two days there and not have to ski much repeatedly. We have made it a regular venue for a day on trips to the PDS. I think you will find it much cheaper for beginners than a bigger PDS resort.
rayscoops, we're there til Wednesday night! Maybe see you about!

Awesome day in Les Crosets, finished snowing about ten and sun came out on and off! The powder was great and not many pistes had been bashed. My poor tele beginner had an awesome time....He was good in pow and bumps by the end of his 3 hour lesson Guess he will find it tough next lesson on smooth piste. Everything was quite quiet too as people in the valley saw the grey sky and thought better of venturing up!

Lovely day out and about in Les Gets and Morzine, very little in the way of queues, particularly as we were skiing over lunchtime - the sun is out now and it is snowing again. The horses were out on the piste around the Fys lift this afternoon, ambling about, providing a hazard for unsuspecting skiers.

Well against all weather reports here, its been light snow for the last hour and 1/2
Ooooohh major day with Gulliame (aspirant guide) today - did't have much time for photos - and have a wee video which I'll have to compile later - but in the words of the Guide - "The best day of the season so far"............
That said did have major problems getting to grips with my fat skis over my more normaal Mantras - probably (according to mates) took more face plants than in the whole of last season!
Had two slides on top of me today - could have fecking killed the idiot who set one off above me (tried to catch him up to belt him) then in a gulley one of our team set one off which was enough to take my skis away - but only small scale - but still had the bowels moving (almost)........... so not too bright, guide was a tad embarrassed about it all!

smudger, I should think the rising temps will be a welcome relief! They appear to stay below 0C which is the main thing, and the snow forecast on 6th/7th will be a nice top up. I shouldn't imagine the temperature increase will increase avalanche risk but that could depend on local conditions so check when you're there.
But you know how it is with the wigglies - they are fickle, so remember to check every 6 hours between now and Thursday.
I'm leaving for a weekend in Les Gets on Friday morning, looking at the latest conditions - can't wait..
However like Smudger I've noticed all the forecasts predicting a pretty big temp rise for Thursday and Friday = rain.. Only chamonix-meteo.com has so far not mentioned this so I'm keeping my fingers crossed (and trying not to obsessively click refresh on the wigglies every five minutes)...
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

andyph, I will be checking! I don't think I'll be getting much work done now to be honest!
hatpegs, lets just hope the next set of wigglies go in our favour...there's not much in it so I'm still hoping for the best
Another great deep powder day finding some nice stashes and runs, have guide booked for tomorrow so "Wait & See" as to what we'll do!

I've got a question that I'm hoping some local might have the answer for...
You know if you go to the top of Col du Fornet on the le Fornet lift and then traverse right you have all the side of the hill to play in. I've seen a couple of times now people doing the same traverse but then side stepping up and over into what seems like another valley. I haven't had the energy to sidestep it up to see where they're going so I'm hoping someone can shed some light as to what's over the other side??

Will S, I think it's Vallee de la Manche. We wanted to do it on Saturday but ran out of time. I hear it is one of the best off piste routes in PdS

Quick update after a fantastic day in the PdS! Despite the forecast blue skies for most of the day and conditions on piste were excellent! Tracked out most of the Les Gets sector and up to Avoriaz tomorrow. Been snowing off an on since about 4pm!
Bloody cold though and now off out for a few jars!
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Can anyone with knowledge of this stuff tell me if this is worrying as I think it is?
I'm guessing it is predicting rain for the 4th/5th but I'm not sure how high up it will be snow!
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Will S, It is indeed the Valle de la Manche, needs a van drop or bus ride out of there as no lifts.

Another very big day yesterday with some steep chutes and dropins then wide open bowls and runouts etc - will compile the video later - but here are a couple of pics from the day. When we left top of Morzine yesterday was dumping big time (16:30) didn't bother to change out of our ski gear and we made it to check in at EuroTunnel by 00:45!
Route down from that dropin (fist col to the left of the band of rock / summit on the right of the image
End up in Morgins by way of 2km of cross country trail you come on to....
Earlier on did this chute, with another steep drop in
Like I say video to come which I'll probably post in the main forum section

Smudger, I don't have much knowledge of these things, but the latest runs suggest rain / snow Thursday evening, turning to snow overnight and through Friday. I wouldn't worry too much - it looks like the exact same situation I had last year in Les Gets, we had one night where it rained heavily in the resort (although it snowed higher up) which left the conditions a bit dodgy the following day. More rain followed that evening, which turned to snow as the temps dropped overnight and we had a fabulous day the day after. This Friday is looking better now that it did a few days ago, so just keep your fingers crossed that the temps dip a bit under what they're currently predicting. I arrive in Les Gets Friday morning so I'll be doing the same.

smudger, at no point does the temp line go above zero deg C, so what are you worried about exactly? (You are looking at the grey line aren't you?)
Snowed Monday from 3pm until about 10 pm - probably only a few inches though. Cloudy day today, quite cold and some light snow in the air over Linga way at lunch time, the pistes are really uite nice and very quiet
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

andyph, for some reason I have been thinking that this prediction is at a fairly high altitude so a prediction of just under zerod deg c would mean rain lower down in the resort...
That prediction is for around 1500m. I must admit I've always followed the green line rather than the grey one!
Anyway, all the forecasts I've seen are starting to agree that Thursday evening could be a bit "wet" at 1172m, including Meteo France, Netweather, Metcheck, Snow Forecast etc. However the good bit is that temps should drop during the night and through Friday, so even if it's wet during the walk to the bars on Thursday night, by the following morning things should look a whole lot better.
Of course this may all be completely wrong. Nothing anyone can do about it either way so just keep your fingers crossed.

one outlier is chamonix meteo which is currently forecasting no precipitation on Thursday.

smudger, hatpegs, even if the forecasts say rain at 1172m, they aren't generally very good at predicting what will happen to a particular type of snow flake as it falls down to that level. I mean, the right kind of snow will still land as snow even if the 0deg isotherm is at 1800m. And they also are not very good at predicting what different types of precipitation will do when they land on snow that's at -5degC - settle, melt, melt the snow they land on, form a layer etc etc.
