Driving over the pass was definitely type 2 fun today... No issues with grip but total whiteout for much of it.
Currently dumping in Zürs... Only one lift open in Lech this afternoon, but still some fun powder shots off the sides.
Tomorrow could either be great or a no-go... Let's see.

I'm driving down this way on Saturday afternoon from MUC airport and not sure which is the best way to go. Get caught in the schladming traffic or get stuck in a pass.

@Markymark29,
Check the weather reports, it is already slowly quieting down. Not nearly as much snow as expected up till now, and no big amounts really coming anymore too. Some snow tomorrow, but friday and Saturday even some sun is possible.
With this forecast Flexenpass will be fine, but chains might be needed
Also, Saturday the Weisse Ring Race is on, so they will make sure the pass is open. Not sure you are planning to ski on Saturday; if so, expect some pistes to be closed or limited for the race. Start already is postponed to 13.00 due to the new snow.
@JimboS Schladming? You are overestimating that event. And anyway you need to get your geography right.

Blizzard most of the day ... but with only one big lift open it was a great day !!

@Langerzug, the A8 is always rammed the Saturday before the Schladming races, so best to avoid using that route down towards Innsbruck from Munich.

There will be MAJOR avalanche problems in the coming days.
Austria has not seen this much snow in early season in decades.....
Expect major disruptions...lift closures etc..

@JimboS, traffic jam on a Saturday on the A8 has close to nothing to do with Schladming.
It is the German/Dutch/Belgian/Scandi holiday and weekend traffic towards the many, many skiresorts in Tyrol and Salzburgerland.
And Kitzbuhel also a bit.... But such skiraces are minor compared to the huge number of ski resorts and their accomodations
It is busy on the A8 almost every Saturday in winter!

Weather
The stormy weather will end on Friday, however, a long-term weather improvement is not expected. The warm front, expected on Thursday, will soon be followed by a cold front on Friday. The snow line will sink to the low areas in the valleys. Friday afternoon promises significantly calmer conditions. However, heavy clouds will dominate the weather at the weekend and the amounts of snowfall will increase. The temperatures will remain wintry low. A lively north-westerly wind and a new active warm front will interfere with the weather on Sunday night and on Monday. Precipitation will increase, the snow line will rise distinctly above 1500m.

Heading out to St Anton Thur 25th for a long weekend - bit worried about the forecast for next week, Snow Forecast says 100mm of rain at resort level on Sun night and then Bergfex is forecasting 8-9 deg C all next week. What would this do to the lower runs (<2000m)?

make them slushy in the day and icy in the mornings if it freezes overnight.

With the Steissbachtal closed, is it possible to get from Kapall/Gampen to Galzig without going to resort level? Is the very bottom of piste 28 open to enable me to get to the bottom of the Zammermoosbahn lift?

@Langerzug, How's Flexenpass looking early evening Saturday you think...... is it open today? Hope we can get into Lech - you think we'll be Ok? Obviously our car is fully kitted up winter tyres and chains but not much help if road closed.

Very little open again today. All inter resort links closed. They opened some of the higher lifts but have now closed them again presumably due to increasing wind. Morning was great but now it's getting warmer and snow on the very few open lower runs is turning to tracked out heavy sh*t. Hope for a refresh tonight.

@Markymark29,
Would not worry too much. Road-closures are not happening as often as they did. A lot of improvements and galleries have been made in the course of the years.
It is quite remarkable that today (thursday) St.Anton is locked of the world, whilst Lech is still open. It used to be the other way around 99% of the time. Probably the recent diversion of the track Stuben-Alpe Rauz is helping a lot.
Today is warm, which is the main problem. (after the snow and the wind of last days)
Tomorrow weather is gonna be quiet.
Saturday is gonna be snowy again, but much colder. Should be fine!
If feasible it might be good to try to get there before it is getting dark though, to be sure.

OMG....Stanton was right guys. First they close the Seissbachtal, and now the Arlbergstrasse. This is the end for St Anton. Its going
to disappear into the clouds and only re appear once every 100 years like Brigadoon. I hope you have a good stash of Beer.

St Anton wasn't completely cut off, it was just very difficult and long winded depending on where you were coming from/to. They have reopened the schnellstrasse junction at St Jakob, so there is now road access which there wasn't earlier. Trains are running between St Anton and Langen as a shuttle service, with bus replacements from there (which meant for Landeck it was all the way back via the road tunnel, situation will have changed now the road has reopened. Still closures on the Pettneu/Schnann road tho, Pettneu is only accessible via the Schnellstrasse/Wellnesspark.

Pretty crazy day in the Arlberg today!
40+cms of really nice snow off the sides of Kandahar etc.
Under Zammermoos was an absolute zoo. Mobs of people all skiing it at the same time, 50+ all skiing on top of each other. On a level 4 day!!
Going up the lift saw someone had been buried in a slide literally 2 metres off the right hand side of the piste. Little bowl/gulley had ripped out BETWEEN the avalanche barriers (as in, crown was just under one avalanche barrier, broke all along the rim of the bowl, and ran over the next barrier). Meanwhile the mobs keep going, ~50% without packs or equipment... Guy must have got out ok as all clear by the time we got down again.
Then the next drama...
I was at a Scott product launch in Zürs (btw their new supercapacitator electric airbag is really sweet!), but due to weather and lift closures went round to St Anton for skiing. Just before we got on the hill heard the pass would be closing... oops (most of our cars plus other stuff were still in Zürs); oh well, go skiing anyway. Lots of chat between guides and avalanche commission contacts just jumbled everything up: which sections of pass were closed, road St Anton towards Landeck closed - now open - now closed, get this train, train closed, special train shuttle put on to Langen, Langen-Zürs road closed, not it's not, yes it is.... Anyway all worked out ok in the end. And I think all roads are open again now.
FWIW the road St Christoph/St Anton side of the pass was much worse/snowier than the Langen/Lech side, which was pretty straightforward.
@Markymark29, if it stays how it is now I think you should be fine getting up to Lech, but I wouldn't like to promise!

The most dangerous scenario is coming this weekend/next week
Warm temps
Snow/Rain
Wind
The inbound ski area will be fine but villages down valley will be on high alert...
