@toro, there is no longer a snow problem in the Arlberg and western Austria generally. BIG dump around Innsbruck today too. Faceshots all day at Nordkette, and skiing to 800m.

Have been in St Anton since last Sunday and have had a great time. True it's snowed massively this week, and we've been skiing in blizzard conditions on galzig and gampen, but it's been a fantastic experience. St anton looks amazing now its in its deep winter clothing, the folks coming soon are going to have some great skiing, lucky bugs. By the way if you want some great après ski get into the murrmel bar to see Gunar, he's absolutely brilliant, it's been rammed in there this week.

Thanks to all you ...feel much better now...
Shall I brig my fat powder skiis over or normal crving skiis ??
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Just arrived in St Anton, difficult to make sense of the piste map, is it possible to ski via a piste to Lech, or is a bus link only, if so where is best place to pick up the bus. Impression so far, the town is really nice !!

Yep, he's still there. Moves bars occasionally, I think Murmel is a new venue for him.
Does anyone know if Chris Lee is back this year?

Bus only. Free bus from Alpe Rauz (blue number 17), there's a sign for Lech which points to the bus stop (it is not in the car park, that's drop off only). Can be a bit of a scrum at times.
Alternative is the Post Bus from St Anton itself, that costs €5-6 or so. Skis go on the back. Can be also be a scrum, especially coming back.

Easy enough drive, depends on the weather conditions as to the state of the Arlberg Pass with regards to chains. Having said that, the free busses are frequent enough not to need to drive over, and there's always the postbus at the end of the day if you're tired...

Very easy to drive over to lech and zurs. You should try and visit 'sonnenkoff' also ( might have spelling a bit off) but some nice pistes over there, and easy To get to with car

@thunderer, yes, very easy drive, maybe 20 minutes to Zurs, another 10 to Lech. If you have snow tyres you won't need chains. Park in Zurs for free. If you park in Lech head to the Schlosskopf car park at the far end of the village, it's a paying car park but it's free if you have a lift pass (just show your lift pass at the cashier's desk to get the ticket validated before you leave).
Edit: OK, if its showing heavily you may need snow chains. I've not had to put chains on since I bought snow tyres so I tend to forget that sometimes they are still needed.

@thunderer, normally it's an easy drive over the pass.
I've driven over it a lot in big storms, and with 4X4 and winter tyres never had a problem. However when I drove over on Friday night in the middle of the latest storm, several other cars did have problems and had to stop to put chains on. It's not that uncommon for a significant proportion of the road to be properly covered with snow (no tarmac showing through).
Generally, in good weather there's nothing to worry about, but if it's snowing then there's a reasonable chance you'd want either 4x4 or chains. You very definitely want winter tyres either way.
The busses are easy though too.
You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It is definitely not true that wintertyres are always sufficient. In fact today chains were obligatory for all vehicles apart from 4x4.
And will very probably tomorrow as well. (If the road will not be closed due to avalanche ; tomorrow it will be dumping)

Forget driving. Warm your legs up by skiing over & taking the bus [ you are paying for rhat in your skipass]. Your feel better for all that extra skiing.
Cars suck.

Question: why have so many runs above Zug (to the top left of the Lech-Zurs piste map) been closed for so long? It can't be wind related every day surely?

Glad we were had a sensible taxi driver from Innsbruck to Lech today - crazy, snowy conditions and poor visibility. Heaps of snow here.
@suggul,
Combination of factors:
1. General lack of snow up till last week
2. That area is very sun exposed (southwest)
3. That area is very wind exposed
4. No artificial snow in that area
No worries anymore, all is resolved now
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@suggul, when I last skied that bit and when you could see it last Thursday it was still very wind blown and bits didn't look like it had filled in, the pistes in that sector were quite hard and wind blown as well. There was an amazing amount of snow came down between Friday and Sunday but again with high winds so hopefully will be nearer to opening.
@Langerzug, @stevew, good to know guys. I'm not there for another 8 weeks, but you know how it is - daily scouring of the snow reports and webcams. That sector looks like particular fun for us. Hopefully, there'll be no problem by mid-March.

Weather
The influence of high-pressure, expected for the beginning of next week, will temporarily weaken on Tuesday and on Wednesday. Unsettled conditions, expected on the north side of the Alps, will bring partly heavy clouds with temporarily weak snowfalls. The influence of low-pressure will further increase in the second half of the week and result in mostly settled weather conditions, accompanied by bright sunshine. The freezing cold temperatures will slowly move eastward. The temperatures will recover day by day.

Any reccomedations for nice tree runs, less than 30degrees, to take some ambitous intermediates on. Rossfall perhaps, is it lift accessed?
Also say hi if anyone wants to meet up for a ski.

@Lift faffer, without wanting to be a bit of a bore (and without knowing any details of you or your friends ability) I'm not completely sure right now is the right time to be taking intermediates off into the backcountry if you don't know the lay of the land?
So have recent snow falls in the Alberg 'saved the season' for the locals or is there still a risk that a southerly 'hair drier' air flow will melt the snow base at village level??
So that's what it should look like without horizontal snow......

That comment from locals was about local business seasons financial Turnover. They lost (were down significantly) on the busiest week of the season (new year) & were empty Xmas week. They will recieve roughly the same number of tourists now the snow has arrived but Easter is very early this season (March 27th). Wherever Easter Falls in the Calender nowadays it begins to get very quiet after Easter Monday even if there is another 4 weeks of the season left!
Little bit off topic so apologies in advance. what was the reason for Jacksy's closing.
Simply more money in converting to apartments? or other reasons?
@mcg, They had enough (noise, hassle) & only wanted to rent it to family or close relatives who understand local concerns. There were no takers. The new large appartment has been rented out lsst few seasons to a Danish Ski Company. Easy money..

Thanks stanton. Sad to see it go as it was a favourite. Interesting that they were so keen to keep it local owned. Re assuring in a way that they were so inclined, as I'm sure there would have been offers from outsiders! Thanks agin for the info.
