his name is noah, seen some posters up around here. If he fell in there I wouldnt say he would be coming out again. Happened years ago with some guy trying to get some drinking water from the falls apparantley.
I was at giessbach last week to see the waterfall there, f'ing insane water coming down at the moment.
This is what most people are worrying about at the moment, http://www.jungfrau-zeitung.ch/artikel/?cq_*847d58c2=ivxPU=87987q5f when that lot comes down grund is gone.

2 million cubic meters of watery mud and rock would indeed do an awful lot of damage to poor Grund, for that matter it would do quite a bit of damage all the way down the valley, no wonder people are worried

Jonny luv plums, no you will have electricity (though perhaps only for the railway) as there's a generator on the Lutschine just below Lauterbrunnen, I was trying to work out where all that muck is, I'm guessing between Wetterhorn and Eiger ? And it probably has all the dbris in it from where that huge chunk of the mountain broke off previously as well

Jonny luv plums, link at top of the page got me an error 404 - but I take it the worry is the volume of the snow melt?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Jonny luv plums, thanks for that, very informative, there's even an english section in there which is handy when dealing with technical descriptions, so as long as this year doesn't have any disasters they should be ok for spring next year

achilles, What's happening in simple terms is that the Grindelwald glacier is melting faster than it used to, however the tip of teh glacier isn't melting because it's covered with a huge amount of rocky debris, so a lake forms behind the debris over the top of the glacier this lake has no natural outlet and teh locals are worried that potentially this could all errupt at some point if the ice dam fails, at that point up to 2million tons of water and rock will flow down the hill over the waterfall and stright into Grund before heading on down the valley with obviously disasterous consequences, so what they are doing over the rest of teh year is blasting a tunnel up through the ice to allow the water to drain away more gradually

It's actually more of a problem than I suggested above, there's another issue, the rock faces above the lake are in part held together with permafrost, with global warming that has become more unstable which results in huge chunks of mountain falling off, if they land in the lake they can send a tidlewave down the lake and over the far end, alternatively they could cause teh glacier to crack causing the lake to instantly drain with disasterous results for Grund, once teh tunnel has been dug teh lake will not form so the risk will be significantly reduced to near non existant, but fo the rest of this year there is a definate risk, much will depend on summer temps and local rainfall
Out of curiosity I seem to recall that Piz Gloria is seccured in Permafrost, I wonder what effects will occur up there with rising temps, I wouldn't want to be their insurrer

D G Orf, ouch. I believe that a lot of the Aipine terrain is secured with permafrost - and that there may bbe considerable problems as it melts.

I found this article from the Independent 2001 regarding the Schilthorn and Permafrost -
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/alps-in-danger-of-tumbling-down-687887.html
quote " Not all ski lifts sitting in permafrost are in danger. The Schilthorn cable car station continually circulates cold air under the building, keeping the ground, and the permafrost underneath it, frozen. Peter Feuz, director of the Schilthorn cable car, said his firm spends around Sfr7m each year maintaining the building's stability. "
........................Sfr7m a year !!

Chris Brookes, indeed, but it makes you wonder, at some point will their ability to keep the permafrost frozen be overwhelmed by global warming

Is this at the Upper or Lower Grindelwald glacier.
The tongue of the Upper is currently as low as 1400 meters.
To me its unimaginable ice can exist on a permanent basis that low, even at the temperatures before industrial revolution.

Chris Brookes, are they actually going to build a new base station or will they simply refurbish the old one ? If the latter they can do it quite quickly, if the former it doesn't look good for this year
