telford_mike, expect more until at least the weekend, some might fall as rain, but if it doesn't then you could be in for up to 90cms of new stuff by Saturday, suggest you batten down the hatches and prepare for avalanches if that occurs

We're just back from a fantastic week in the Jungfrau region...
We stayed in the Chalet Rosa in Lauterbrunnen with Ski Miquel. It was a lovely chalet, with great food, and brilliant ski guiding with Carol. There was plenty of reasonable wine with the four course dinner. The other guests were interesting and entertaining which helped to make it one of our best skiing holidays.
We tried the Murren side on the Sunday. A couple of runs at Winteregg, then up the funicular, and Schiltgrat and up the Schilthorn to black 9 and then Muttleren and back down red 15 and black16. Then rosti for lunch at Sonnenburg. It turned misty in the afternoon, so we stayed in the Winteregg area but managed to ski all the way back to Lauterbrunnen on red3...
Monday was our first attempt at Wengen, with a few runs near the Mannlichen and Lager chairs. Then down the super everlasting red 21 into Grund for coffee at the Alpen. then train back up to Kl Scheidegg, and runs around the Arven and Gummi until stopping for a fantastic steak sandwich for lunch at the station at KS. After lunch we took the train up to Eigerletscher and Black Rock down to Wixi and then the Lauberhorn... where I managed to clock 85.23 km/hr on the speed trap... wow .. What a great day!!
Tuesday we went back to Murren and the Schilthorn and lovely goulash at Piz Gloria for lunch while watching the bearded vultures... The warm weather meant that the avalanche risk was high and Black 16 was closed so we had to take the gondola back down to Murren...then work our way across and back up to Winteregg and Red 1 and 3 back down. The path was getting a bit patchy lower down but still skiable with care.
Wednesday was the chalet day off, so guideless we headed back to Wengen and Arven, Gummi and Honegg. We decided Black 16 was our favourite, with a bit of off piste bumps or speed piste and we did that one about four times straight off. Then soup for lunch up at Eigerletscher before the nightmare that is the Salzegg T Bar... Then Falboden, Wixi and the Lauberhorn black 41.
Thursday we were guided again, and guess where? Yes, Wengen and much the same as we did on Tuesday and Wednesday but ended up with the tremendous Blue 21 through the trees down to Brandegg and for lunch soup followed by scrumptious Apple Fritters. We finished early to get to the Wengen Curling Rink for an introduction to curling followed by gluehwein ... Great fun...
Friday was the epic trip by taking two trains to Grindlewald, bus to Firstbahn, Gondala to First and then the Oberjoch chair... but the snow was excellent even if the wind chill was about -15... and the worst lunch all week with dishwater soup of the day at Bort,... Back up to the top and then Red 22 back down, train up to KS and a last go at the Lauberhorn DH...
A fantastic week with incredible scenery and amazing blue skies... Hardly any waiting for a lift and the guide knew the train times like the back of her hand, so if we had 10 mins spare we nipped down another run to pass the time until the train was due…
Lauterbrunnen was handy for Murren and Wengen, although Wengen was our preferred side… Highlights were the Downhigh speed trap, Apple Fritters, and Lager Hell…

WayneC, why would anyone take the train to grumbleweed from lauterbrunnen? lauterbrunnen - wengen - mannlichen - grund - grumbleweed - firstbahn. Much quicker.
Save the salzegg T bar, when they replace that it's another area lost to the monkeys.

Jonny luv plums, we wondered that afterwards and we realised that we would have been skiing down from mannlichen rather than sitting on the train, but thought it would only have been 5 - 10 mins quicker and we were quite a big group that day that took a bit of hurding...
I don't mind the occasional T bar but that one must be the steepest I've ever been on.. but minor points in what was a fantastic week.
Oh and I forgot to mention the green drinks for St Patricks in the Horner Bar...

Chris Brookes, stacks of it around and lots of lazy people taking the easy stuff, leaving the good more effort to get to stuff free. I'm getting 2 hours a day to spazz out up the hill. For once I'm injury free (for the time being ) Not looking forward to the rain on saturday but it should bang it down up top.

Are they replacing the Salzegg t bar with a chairlift?

beanie1, unfortunately yes. Maybe I should start a protest, I'm sure there are nesting marmotts or some other crap animal up there, they should be protected. NO to the chair lift.

beanie1, that blasted lift has been up for replacement since the mid 60's I think, it's unsafe because the wholelift cannot be seen from bottom or top, they installed cameras after several accidents but it's still regarded as unsafe so they're finally going to replace it, now I understand that some people are going to be upset as it will open up that area to less profficient skiers, however on the bright side it should mean less lift queues as the base station will be at Arven/Honegg so if one starts to get busy hopefully people will use one of the other two instead

The web site for the pass http://www.jungfrauwinnercard.ch/ said we could register and see which lifts we had used and stats etc, but mine only seemed to have details of the day after I got home. How do you look at the specifc days that I used the pass... or would we have had to keep the passes and not get our deposits back?
TIA

yes, I realise that and we noted down the number when we were there and registered as soon as we got back. We couldn't register before 'cus we didn't have cards, and we didn't have net access over there. But they have now obviously re-issued the card i used and all I can see are someone's trip from the day I got back. There doesn't seem to be anyway of telling it other dates you are looking for.

I see from the Jungfrauwinter site that half the Wengen lifts shut on 13th April - is this the last day they are open, or the first day they are shut?
|
|
|
|
|
|
AdrianV,
According to the staff at the Bahnhof ths morning, these are the last days of operation of the lifts:
Mannlichen - 13th April
Kleine Scheidegg - 19th April
Murren - Schilthorn - 25th April
It is very warm here, but there's so much snow I doubt there'll be a problem reaching these dates.
