Yup, this morning was “challenging” on the Galzig. No visibility until well into Kandahar and 50kph winds to blow out the cobwebs.
Upper lifts closed. Rendl only had Rendlbahn and Maass spinning until lunchtime, when Riffel 1 started up.

@Markymark29, you could be in luck. The next few days look like they could go either which way, but…
Quote: |
However, by Friday, the inflowing cold air will come under the influence of high pressure. Only a few clouds will mix with the sunshine. Despite the bright sunshine, it will remain bitterly cold, maintaining a deep winter chill. This pattern is expected to change little over the weekend. |
7:50 edit: it started snowing steadily around 3pm. There is now maybe 5cm on the deck outside our apartment. Undoubtedly more on the mountain. Assuming the 50kph winds have not abated significantly, there will be some epic drifts, and some very scoured ice patches, by tomorrow.

Thanks, sorry just come back to this. That’s a long time! I think they’ll just have to stick with Warth and the skiers will come back most days to meet for lunch in or above Warth.

Epic powder day in Zürs. Many untracked, or lightly tracked, lines possible. Bluebird for most of the day, some high cloud later.
Relatively quiet in Zürs, but StA was high-season manic in the morning, as you might expect on a powder day.
——————-
Mittwoch:
Much warmer this morning. The forecast has a bit of everything:
Quote: |
After a temporary high on Tuesday with a predominantly friendly mix of sun and clouds, we will reach the foehny front of a low-pressure system over Western Europe on Wednesday.
In the mountains, strong to stormy southerly foehn wind will prevail. At the same time, extensive cloud fields will pass by, which may even deposit some precipitation. However, large amounts of precipitation are not expected, as the snow line is at 1800m above sea level. The sun should also be able to make occasional appearances.
Moving towards Thursday, the southerly foehn will weaken, and the weather will become more unsettled. With a mix of sun and clouds, there will be occasional precipitation. In the late afternoon, a cold front will arrive, causing the snow line to rapidly drop below 1000m above sea level. The incoming cold air will come under the influence of strong high pressure on Friday. Remaining clouds will give way to the sun, but it will remain wintry cold.
Saturday will bring clear and beautiful weather, but also extremely cold temperatures. On Sunday, high cloud cover will indicate a significant weakening of frost at higher altitudes. |
Been snowing gently all morning. Maybe 5cm on the ground. Slopes and lifts all but empty.

In 60 or 70 trips to the Alps, last week in Lech rates as being best and worst. Best ski holiday ever, worst hit to my wallet ever.

Zero degrees at 2400m
fis race cancelled as too warm
Viz improving … bit of hail but no rain yet
About 5cm fresh snow last night … off piste is pretty damn good as long as you can see

The Austrian Air Force, such as it is, seems to be conducting exercises in the area. I have seen multiple passes over the last few days by 2-ship formations.
As mentioned by @PBJ, it has warmed significantly, but skiing remains good. Nobody around. Galzig all but deserted.

Having stayed in St Anton 5 times before I knew what to expect, but have become fed up with the excess numbers of pi55 heads there. Enjoyed the peace of Lech much more than expected but did spend one early evening in the Moserwirt followed by a dash to the last bus back to Lech at 7.11 from the train station.

Yes agreed. In the town and on the slopes. Zurs skiing has also suffered from them steaming over on the flexenbahn
Happily, the Lech & Warth skiing has the buffer of the bus or the ski route to Zug which is enough to deter most of them

IMHO, I think Lech is very over-rated, other than by those whose priority is to lunch, and/or like cruising on relaxed runs. I will grant the village has a nice ambience and… many nice spots to eat and shop.
Too many slopes in Lech face south-ish and get quickly cooked off after a snowfall. It offers mainly blue and light red skiing, with notable exceptions of Furkawang, Langerzug, and Tannegg, and perhaps a few others. The options in bad weather are quite limited.
We are wedded to StA because (primarily) we have friends here, but also the skiing options, especially in poor weather. If we were to pick another village in the Arlberg, it would be Warth or Zürs.
The so-called pi55heads in StA don’t bother us because we stay in Nasserein and stay away from Dorfstraße, apart from shopping.

Back to the weather...
Seems like a top up tomorrow and then a perfect (if cold) weekend.
Early next week looks more uncertain with different models having the atlantic systems encroaching to a greater or lesser degree before all seem to agree on things brightening up from Thursday onwards

Poked my head out of the door. Looking decidedly damp, though not actually raining at the moment. Thick fog down here, but the cams show that it is somewhat clearer at mid-mountain.
Might be good to have a short day - legs are feeling the effects of 16 days straight. Need to get fitter for StA2025…

@munich_irish, Yup! It is drizzling all the way up to the Gampen. Like skiing on semi-frozen slurpee! Will get some wind in my whiskers and go in.
The Europa Cup may have been called off. It looked like the safety fencing was being removed this morning.

Actually, the skiing on the Galzig is quite enjoyable. A thin coat of damp snow, on which the skis are running freely, and good visibility.

Viz OK most if the time
Light snow up top and drizzle down town … not bad enough to get wet though.
Nice lunch at Albona in Stuben
Really nice snow at top on Lee side of kapall… blown powder ! Very soft near town but enjoyable

Tricky start in poor viz and strong winds with frozen pistes.
Sun by 11.30 and off piste opened up which in the right places was awesome with up to 30cm wind blown powder in Mattun.
Off to Schindler this afternoon.

Weird limited view of Lech...
Ever heard of the Rüfikopfbahn? It's that lift that you use when the time is nearing to return home. We mostly use it first thing, in glorious morninglight, when the views over Zürs, Valluga and Albona are best.
Lech and Zürs share one skiarea.
Only when staying in Lech both your beloved Zürs AND Warth are at the doorstep...Even Trittkopf/Flexenbahn is very quick and easy from Rüfikopf.
And how about the truly splendid bad weather options in Zürs and Warth? I'd rather stay between Lech's Schlegelkopf, Petersboden and Schlosskopf....
Not to mention the regular closures of Auenfeldjet...and the shade of early season Warth

No comment on which is the superior village, but Zurs was skiing quite nicely today. Rain crust started about 150m above valley floor, but still lots of nice pow above that.

Fabulous day. Bluebird, but OMG it was cold. -16C. I obviously still don’t have my winter coat in place.
As, @PBJ said yesterday, the snow above 1800m was largely very enjoyable. Death cookies, ice, or man-made below.
Quite busy for a Saturday. Great snow and sunshine will do that. Carparks at Rauz and Zürs were close to full. Big queues on Seekopf in the morning and on Ruffi after lunch - not helped by only Ruffi 2 running at the time.
A new, significant avalanche on the Steißbachtal slopes, not far from the usual exit from Mattun. Did not see it yesterday, so must have occurred during the night.

I can see @Ulmerhutte's point. It is not to knock Lech at all, it clearly is a very nice place and a great place to have a winter holiday but it does have its limitations. The main slopes above the village deteriorate fairly quickly in the sun (as do many of St Anton's) and many of the runs are cruisy blues (nothing wrong with that). If your main focus is to push your skiing ability then you are better off in one of the other Arlberg locations with a greater variety of skiing (though no issue to get anywhere from Lech) also not an ideal spot if "Austrian apres" is your thing. For a mixed ability group or family who want an all round winter break especially if into food then Lech is ideal assuming you have the budget.

@munich_irish, thank you for a more balanced view. But you too are wrong I'm afraid.
You are also focusing on the Lech-Oberlech area, whilst de Zürs-area is just as well part of the Lech system via Rüfikopf. Lech-Zürs is one very special skiresort.
And talking about variety, it's in fact Lech-Zürs that has the edge.
With Zuppert, Furkawang, Liezen, Bergeralpe, Langerzug, Tannegg and Kriegerhorn Süd, Ost and Nord it has an impressive amount of (very) challenging skiroutes. Not mentioning the endless and often easy accessible unsecured gelände.
And -turning the argument around- Lech-Zürs does have the lovely cruisy reds and blues that are notoriously failing on the St.Anton side.
