Well after the huge downpour last night I was pleased to be greeted by a decent morning. We had a quick run up the Chavannes Express and down to the village and decided to ski Mt Chery today - quite hard down the Lievre and then we had four top to bottom runs down to the village - the Chamois was the nicest we have found it all season so far. Over to the Marmottes and although windy along the ridge at the top it was nice and quiet and I found the snow great - but I don't mind it hard. Had a quick omelette over at the bar in Encrenaz for a change. We had been expecting a bit of rain this afternoon - must have been a duff forecast.
Did have a tumble going down our own drive first thing this morning which had some very icy patches! The poubelle lorry driver who happened to be going along the road seemed most concerned and stopped his vehicle until he saw me actually get up - thumbs up sign was not enough for him - what a gent.

Not sure it's forecast to be "really" cold, just sort of normally cold. It is winter after all.
Swiss meteo forecasting 60-70 cms possible, although more likely in the North.
Chamonix meteo somewhat more sanguine.

Its -00.5 here at 9.15 in Les Gets and sleety rain coming down at the moment.
Off to find lunch somewhere as OH's birthday - somewhere where we won't have lots of people in damp ski suits around us I think.

are the pistes likely to be busy next week? Is it holidays for anywhere French or English?

The bad weather put paid to our little excursion into Switzerland today, our last day , so we stuck to Avoriaz and then dropped down into Lindarets where visibility is better. Would have stayed out for lunch, but we were getting soggy...
Seems to be both grainy snow, sleet and a bit of rain, all at the same time!

To be fair, it was.
And now it's just rain.
I had the rather strange experience of "breaking trail" on the Les Gets / Morzine cross country this morning. All very pretty in the snow. Less so when it turned to rain around 11:00.
NotMrsFS and I were contemplating skinning up something later. But I can't see that happening...
NotMrsFS was having a telemark lesson this morning (I'm not so stupid as to attempt to teach her) and reported that it was "leg breaker" snow. Although, much better than the conditions yesterday. I had to work, but NotMrsFS swears blind that Torvill and Dean went past at one point...

Still tipping down with 'just rain' in Les Gets and 2.2C
We managed a very delicious lunch at the Chamade in Morzine which got busier and busier. Very drippy people wandering about.

Avoriaz had super snow on the runs today today, best snow of the week IMO although the falling snow quickly became rain, we were sodden this aft.
Still ringing in morzine though

Well, it's rained solidly now for long enough that several ski instructor chums are considering using canoes tomorrow.
I've put an order in for an ark. Just in case.

Nunfa1, we stayed in an apartment in the village for our second ski trip where our bed was directly under the roof on a mezzanine floor. It absolutely peed down for the first five days of our trip, so much so that we couldn't hear ourselves talk and lay there worrying about the snow for the next day. That week was probably one of our top trips despite wet gear and not so pretty photos, the snow was great and there is far more of a base there now than we had then
|
|
|
|
|

marmotte16, Thanks for the reassurance. I'm sure it will be fine but I've waited a long time for this trip and I'd much rather it snowed the week we go than rained.
There's no doubting that we are going to have a great time once we are there.
|
|
|

We are back out on the 9th so hoping for no more rain, was bad enough for the one day after Christmas when it absolutely chucked it down, still I have re-proofed all the gear and will be ready for anything

All change here again this morning - about three to four inches in the drive - the plough cleared it some time ago and filling up again. Minus 3.4 at the moment and all the trees are white again. Forecast looks like snow, snow and more for most of the next few days.

Does anyone know if the rumour that the road down to Morzine from Avoriaz is closed at the moment due to an accident is true?

Still snowing this afternoon - OH and a friend staying spent the morning around the Atray/Fys area out of the wind. First thing the Red Egg and the Chavannes Express were not running, later on the new Tronics and the Pointe du Nyon lifts out of action - seemed to be a lot of ice around. Huge, deep holes in places full of water, some marked, some not marked so care needs to be taken.

Chaos in the Ardent car park this morning as the Ardent bubble was running, but nothing above it due to "the weather" *.
We did the only thing you can do on a day like that, which was to head for the place that has no name in the hope that everyone has just given up. When we got to the top of the bubble at 10:00 they were only just opening the left of the two chair lifts. Half way up we finally realised that "weather" meant "wind". Lots of it.
A run down the front was sufficiently discouraging (blowing a hooley; very flat white; extremely variable snow) that we all immediately headed into the self-service place for a coffee and a regroup. Dropping down over the back proved to be just the ticket and Mouflon was particularly fine for 4 runs before the snow warmed a little and got very heavy.
Run of the day was the black down the front back to town. Truly challenging snow (really, not nice at all), but extremely satisfying.
Early lunch.
Early home.
Not a day for dawdling.
* We were told it was a similar situation at Nyon - cable car running, but nothing else for a while - they got Troncs running around 10:30/11:00.

That hideous ice did for my wife's ACL on Thursday morning - on the Mossettes run down from Avoriaz. Cut up by a snowboarder and she slipped down the edge of the piste
At least there was quite a bit of snow on Friday morning and overnight. Bit of a strange week all in all. Will write a longer review on the 'not the weather' PdS thread....
