Apparently in the local bakers this afternoon, Mrs NBT was chatting to a chap who owns an apartment in Bad Gastein. Do any snowheads with BG apartments shop in Archer's in Marple?

Großarl really is a lovely place to ski, very cruisy wide runs, fantastically prepared, although the home runs were all very icy. Worth a visit if anyone is around, and the Dorfgastein side was very quiet indeed. |
We really liked it at Grossarl & Dorfgastein and twice got the bus to Grossarl when we were in Alpendorf the other week. Much quieter slopes and really long runs - wheeee! We found the slopes round Alpendorf & Wagrain to be much busier than I'd have thought for mid-Jan.

Very cold overnight. Not the type of night when one would want to leave ones ski boots in the car

kooky, blades probably not as bad as monoskier avec all-in-one.
Avoided you again today, it's becoming a habit. I ventured up to Rittisberg for a gentle ski tour with the preggie OH, Darn cold getting ready in the car park but once moving soon warmed up and was hatless and gloveless in no time. Not much wind today but when the odd breeze come through was very chilling.Very quiet little ski hill, ideal for kids and uphill skiing. I couldn't resist some powder hunting on the way down and there's still some decent snow around, so through some trees and ended up on the xc run much to the dismay of some old langlaufers.
I will be out skiing tomorrow, not sure if with the Ben crowd or a ski tour yet.
About to send you a PM on another subject.

looks like I best go shopping then!
So; yes... then first few runs were spent on some Big Foot ski things (shorter than blades and far more stooopid). Good fun at times though but not when you pop off to the side and end up leaving perfectly formed yeti footprints!
Afternoon spent boarding at Flachau Winkl. Found a cheeky little couloir off the back of the Absolut park. Hardly skied out and lots of deep fresh on all the sides. So it is still there if you look for it!

very good conditions high enough up, bit icy from mid station down. funniest sight this week was flangesax, pitching into a ditch with his 'big feet' blades after a slight misjudgement.

What a great day in Alpendorf. we made our own way over from Flachau as Sue had car problems again today. We enjoyed the long cruisey runs and I remembered that I can actually ski! The snow was in lovely condition but it was very cold at around -15; luckily there was no wind. Excellent lunch at the Starchen Stadl and apres in Flachau doing all the cheesy Austrian songs.
Home tomorrow. Boo

Booo indeed!! It's been a great week and have loved, loved, loved trekking around the area (apart from disconnected bus stop/dither yesterday - we were quite jaded it's fair to say). I'll be back as soon as I can be without a doubt

FraserP, Flachau itself was pretty good from what I could tell in my short stay and the runs (and views) from Wagrain over to Alpendorf are great.
|
|
|
|
|
|
FraserP, The Flying Mozart from the top of the Star Jet 3 lift (top of the achter gondola and ski left) down to Wagrain is lovely at 4.8km. We adored Alpendorf and the Grafenberg area; Flachauwinkel was also really good. We preferred these areas to Flachau itself as the snow was better and the runs were quieter. We didn't actually ski down to the Flachau base, preferring to get the Achterjet back down as the bottom section was so busy and scraped - you might feel the same in a busy half term week.
We never made it to Altenmarkt, Radstadt or Zauchensee - they'll have to wait till next time.
