Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@munich_irish, agree, though last year I scored first tracks down from Madloch-Zug, which was not too shabby either.

Just turning back to that discussion on Wiesele, this is a photo from 2014:

It really is mellow line, ie quiet, nice scenery, and no death-defying sections.

Here is a tip, don't go to the Tritt Alpe for lunch, two pizzas and two ski wasser was more than €60. Shocked

We normally eat at one of the on-mountain company restaurants in StA, ie those on the Gampen, Galzig, Rendl, or Stuben Mittelstation. The food is good, if not gourmet, and the prices are reasonable for StA.

In Zürs, we usually pick the Bergrestaurant Seekopf. We have avoided Trittalpe for years for the reason mentioned above, ie the prices.

In Lech, our pick is the restaurant at the top of the Ruffikopf cable car.

Our favourite restaurant is S1 at the bottom of the Saloberjet in the Warth ski area. That obviously is only an option if we are spending the day in the area.

Prices have gone up significantly since last year.

For context: we do not do big lunches, sitting for hours in a restaurant, wine etc. The day is for skiing! So, someone else will have provide tips on upmarket, lunchtime dining.

Have been to Lech a few times with the family and it’s probably our favourite resort. However the last couple of New Year weeks we’ve been away with a big group (12) and have been to France to stay in chalets/apts. I’d love to take the group to the Arlberg but struggling to find a suitable apartment or chalet. Any ideas for group accommodation in Lech? Thanks!

@Soozm, the fact that Lech has few large appartementblocks a la France is quite likely one of the reasons you love it so much Very Happy

@Soozm, Last few years some chalets were build in Lech, but these in general are of the very costly type, e.g. Lech Lodge, Arla and this years new ultra chique Sonnenhof.
To find a bit more economical options you probably need to combine two or more apartments within one accommodation; some names that come to mind are Appart Andrea, Eldorado, Rüfikopf, Haus Bickel

@Chick, I agree with the "ski day is too short to waste time eating" thought so cant help with suggestions of where the food might be decent. However a spot with nice views is Balmalp at the top of the lift up from Zug. On a sunny day glorious views across to Madloch, you can spend time trying to work out the route you took down. Wont be the cheapest spot but fine for a schiwasser & coffee unless you fancy overpriced prosecco on the VIP terrace Very Happy

Kaiser Wetter day. Forecast suggests the next 3 days will be similar.

High season crazy in Zürs this morning. A ski instructor thought it was due to the https://www.derweissering.ski/de/das-rennen/das-rennen which is on this weekend. Maybe. Given the snow and weather, I suspect that more than one person called in sick with a 48-hour bug!

Nasserein looks like it has been completely fenced-off for the races on the following weekend. Only saw it from the lift, ie did not ski there.

Oh, and no shortage of boy racers out on the piste.

@ulmerhutte, Does this mean you can't ski from Kapall to Nasserein.
We have a couple of skiers in our group who only ski blues or easy reds so with blue 55 and 56 closed does this mean they can't ski from Galzig to St Anton .

@Chick, I believe that there are options to get from Gampen/Kapall to Nasserein, but since we have not been over there for a few days, I cannot be certain.

With Steißbachtal closed, there is no Blue option to ski from Galzig back to the base. You have to download.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
@Chick, You can use number 27 "Hoppelweg" - bunny run, it starts off to the left on the blue under the Gampen restaurant. There are big signs with bunny pictures to show the way. Certainly less stressful than either of the runs that lead past the KK or Mooser for the less than confident. The races are a bit of a pain, sometimes they build a tunnel under the race track for access to Nasserein but that cant be recommended for less strong skiers either.

The closure on 55 & 56 has nothing to do with the race it is down to avalanche risk in the small valley (Steissbachtal) they run through. The slope on the north side is a risk area for so called glide cracks, the unusual weather before Christmas means a high risk of those (wet ground basically) and blasting etc makes no difference hence the closure. Sadly unless folk are up to skiing Kandahar - 52 (it is not that difficult but beyond some, no point in scaring yourself) only option is the lift back from Galzig.

@munich_irish, Our hotel is beside the nasserein lift so would be a pain if we can't ski back.We used the tunnel last year so hopefully it's there this year.
55 and 56 were open the week we were there last year so it's a pity they can't sort it out. We are a mixed group so disappointing that some will have to download.

I cannot see Steißbachtal opening anytime soon. There are are many glide cracks, and one significant avalanche, on the Schindler side of that run. Snow dams are sometimes built along that side of the piste, but I suspect there is simply too much snow up there for any sensibly-sized dam.

Kandahar is a circus at the end of the day. Many polished/slick areas, interspersed with moguls, and people without the necessary skills spearing off in random directions. This is a photo from a few years ago, but today was no different:

I doubt it. I cannot picture a track from Warth to the Auenfeldjet, unless you walk up and down ski runs. You probably would not be allowed on chairlifts with snowshoes.

You could get a bus to Schröcken, and then walk up to Korbersee, but then how to get to the Auenfeldjet? Same problem as before.

It is the Weisse Ring race today. https://www.derweissering.ski/en/the-race A good day to stay away from Lech/Zürs unless you are interested in the race or the after-parties. There will be multiple closures of lifts and and runs. A fair amount of the infrastructure was already in place yesterday.

@DM118, apart from Schlegelkopf, just about all Lech and Zürs skiing is above the tree line, so much of a muchness. You should be good, the forecast is pretty decent for most of the week.

I had to do this a couple of times from Warth back to St Anton

Best & cheapest way is Public Transport . Bus & Train..

Only problem is the travel time : To Lech it take around 4hr & 20mins and cost around €16 (without discount) for the train section.. Busses you have to pay seperately. not much

Warth - Dornbirn- Feldkirch - St Anton or Bludenz then another Bus

@PBJ, Rendl is likely to be clear , it is known as "sunny Rendl". When the weather comes in from the west (as it mostly does) dense cloud often forms over the Arlberg pass and hangs about over Galzig whilst further to the east ie Rendl is clear. Only issue is that it can be rather icy first thing
