@fullducknodinner, why? The races will have no direct impact on the Galzig, Rendl, and obviously the areas further west, ie Stuben, Zürs, etc…

You should know by now not to get a straight answer to your questions from stanton. It's a secret between him and the cows.
I expect it must be KK. The MW didn't open till around 1989, the KK has been around since 1974 so can arguably claim to the the place apres was invented in St Anton at least. My first time in St Anton was 1990 and nobody even mentioned the MW back then, everyone headed to the KK. The KK definitely looked like it could do with a refurb when I was in there last year.

Anyone on the ground able to advise daily storage costs for skis/ boots at Alber Sport Galzig depot? We normally get this thrown in as part of our accommodation package but going out on 19th for 10 nights and staying this time in an Airbnb which doesn't offer that service, and don't want to be trudging them about easier to leave at bottom of the lift. I've emailed them but no reply, can call I guess but just wondered if anyone any experience of this - down stairs in the sliding racks at bottom of the escalators if possible rather than at ground level. TIA
@fullducknodinner, I've been there at the time of races and other high profile ski team events, its not a massive issue, either go away from Kapall/ Gampen area (which in fairness is what most people do anyway), or stay local for the day and soak up the atmosphere/ chill type day. One thing to be aware of is that the atmosphere in town can be a tad lively when the ski teams are in town, the team entourages are all on expenses and they tend to like a late night with all the full on apres that is on offer at places like MW/ KK and later Bobo's/ Murmel etc being pretty boisterous (polite way of saying its a chuffin' nightmare and I personally keep well away)

@Markymark29, Last few times I have used Jennewein directly opposite the Galzigbahn the have a space inside plus some seating outside. Easy to sit and change boots etc plus ski & boot racks, same level as outside. Cant remember the cost (not much) they didnt charge me last time as I had hired skis from them and the staff are nice folk. They have lockers downstairs too so you need to specifically ask for the upstairs area, a number of the local guides seem to keep their kit there.

The year of sticker shock, eg:
- Season pass up 50% in 2 years.
- Gulaschsuppe at Stuben Mittelstation now €11.
- Tourist tax now €5/day. Probably not an issue for those staying only a week, but we are staying 10 weeks…
- Large glass of soft drink at the Galzig is €5.90.

@ulmerhutte, I noticed last year some places had got silly expensive. I guess you dont patronise Base Camp and are not likely to at the price they charge for a cup of coffee! I had a surprise yesterday when a day's pass cost me more in Scheffau (Skiwelt) €69 than it would in the Arlberg €68 (that is the "oldie" discount price which I qualify for by 6 weeks). I would say the prices in the self service restaurant in SkiWelt were about the same as the prices you mention above it is not just an Arlberg thing, a Schiwasser, portion of chips & a coffee were over €20!

@munich_irish, I think it depends where you go. I agree on the day passes, crazy money now, but a bowl of soup at Stubai was still about 5.50€ this week, and 3.50€ for a cappuccino (though maybe you need to pay more to actually get a hot one...). Similar at Kühtai – had Gemuse Gröstl for about 12€ and it was a good 50% more food that I could physically eat! That said, there is one Innsbruck hut that I am now avoiding because the prices are getting ridiculous – over 20€ for a Schnitzel! – even though their neighbours are still reasonably priced (and far better organised).

@ulmerhutte, silly prices in St Anton, especially accommodation, so I'm staying in Zurs at better value 4* hotel away from the Arlberg's overpriced hostelry. I won't miss the late night p*ssheads and drunken Muppets that frequent the town, and looking forward to skiing Trittkopf and Madloch ahead of the crowds. I reckon this may well be one of the last trips to the Arlberg.

Fresh snow overnight and a little bit more during the day. Maybe 10cm in total? The zero degree line was somewhere near Village level, so reasonably wet snow, but still fun to ski.
Everyone has gone home! So quiet compared to the preceding days.
Steissbachtal remains closed. Plenty of people are however ignoring the closure signs and skiing it. One consequence of the closure is people, whose ambitions are greater than their skills, are giving Kandahar a go and being found out.

Yeah I saw that this morning. Parked up near sankt Christoph and took the bus. Brought the wrong snow chains ugh. But it’s clearly not stopping everyone. While waiting for the bus, the vast majority of cars had no chains on.
Visibility is nothing by Zurs today. However there’s almost nobody except some Lebanon ski race team or that’s what it appears like.

@ulmerhutte, @munich_irish, thanks for the info.
We got a taxi/van over from St Anton at about 7.30 last night, no chains just a mad driver overtaking everyone in sight. Anyway we got here safe and sound by about 8pm.
Good day in Lech and Wrath but visibility was limited. Rest of the week is looking great.
Finished the day in the Rud Alpe, two rounds of drinks €90, I think this week will make my wallet a bit lighter.

@JimboS, you are most welcome, though @munich_irish deserves the credit for the detail.
Fabulous day today. First cold day since we arrived in-country last Monday. Around -6C at mid-mountain and a dusting of new snow. The cold temps resulted in some lovely dry snow. Visibility was fine up to ~2000m, ie the very top of Galzig and Kapall were in fog. Not as quiet as yesterday, but not hectic.
Steißbachtal remains closed and I venture to say that will remain so for a good long while yet. There was a big slide, ie down to dirt, starting close to the end of, but below, the Schindler piste.
Riffel 2 is not turning. Overheard a guide saying that the lift company, ABB, does not see it as a priority, and has not done so since the covid years.
Prep for the racing has started. The Eisfall is fenced off and the safety netting appears to be in place.
Some bluebird days forecast for next week.

Has Steißbachtal been closed every season since the first time back a few years ago (before Covid) when those glide cracks appeared and there was some sort of thing to do with the owner of the land?
Or has been open again at some stage?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@VolklAttivaS5, closed only when conditions require. It was open last season.
I believe the lift co would like to see avi barriers installed on that slope but the owner will not agree.
Edit: in some seasons, the lift co builds a dam made of snow on the Schindler side of the Steißbachtal piste. I assume the reason it has not been done yet this season is that there is too much snow on the slopes above, ie a decent slide could cross any dam that could be sensibly built.

Ever since Wiesele was designated a route, which was a few years ago, it has been closed - or so it seems. The cynic in me says it was made into route to close it.

@JimboS, Most importantly, the 160 is NOT down to Lech, you'll need a skibus, it ends on the road between Zürs and Lech.
(apart from that, it is open quite often; but logically not after (heavy) snowfall, since that area is quite dangerous...)

Riffel 2 is operaing today (finally) ..
Precaution as there has been huge Avalanche risk in HinterRendl & Malfontal ..
Valluga is Closed again..
Steißbachtal has been closed all season (so far).. This will probably be the case until the 2 specific landowners allow the Ski Company to install Ugly Steel Avalanche Breakers ....which they have been refusing becuase if anyone has been in the Steißbachtal in the summer ..it is stunning .. So its deadlock ..
They have been looking at an alternative blue route down (the old piste from St Christoph) but this area is a protected natural water catchment "Maiensee" area & there are some issues about this .They would also need to install protective Ugly Avalanche barriers (different land owners)
Innsbruck Airport chaos yesterday saw mulitple diverted planes ...to Munich & Other Airports in Austria .. Coaches laid on to take departing passengers to Germany ,etc..

Schröcken
Finally after decades The municipality of Schröcken has now agreed on a final variant for the Dorfbahn.
https://www.gemeinde-schroecken.at/system/web/GetDocument.ashx?fileId=1179076&cts=1703239502&ncd=1
Option 1 (Schröcken Heimboden with a direct connection to the Falkenkopf) is to be implemented in the slimmest form (monocable gondola). This with the minimum technical measures required.
• For Nesslegg, a further project (V1 P2, fixed-clamped 4-seater chairlift) is to be examined with regard to feasibility, regardless of variant 1.
• The pitches that are not directly connected will be fully served by the ski bus in the same quality and scope as before (feeder Dorfbahn or Salober valley station).
• Any additional infrastructure (snow-making facilities, underground car parks, restaurant mountain station, infrastructures in the valley, etc.) are not urgent requirements of this project and would have to be examined on a case-by-case basis, depending on the interested party and operator. The primary goal is to establish the technical connections between the village and the ski resort or Nesslegg and the ski area in the leanest form.
• Regardless of the timing of the implementation of the Dorfbahn, an improvement of the village runs (currently ski routes 309 and 310) is to be pursued vigorously, so that a conversion from ski route to ski run is possible.
• The dormant administrative procedure for variant 1 is to be resumed immediately. This is done in consultation with the project team or project company.
A multi-storey car park was considered, but also not fully financed so far. In addition to the planned valley station in the village "centre", there is also the Mohnenfluh hotel project.

Weather
The prevailing easterly current is coming under the influence of high pressure from the North West.
Sunshine takes command of the weather. maybe a few harmless cloud fields still around.
From Wednesday onwards mostly bright sunshine will set in in a cloudless sky.
Little will change between now and Saturday. According to the latest information, the winter cold should now remain with us.
In addition, a new cold air advance from the north is in the making in the middle of the month.
Winter is BACK !!

@munich_irish, there are actually a number of other lines, eg Gamsroute, Wasserschloß, & Sattel, that exit via the bus stop at the end of the Gallerie.
I used to enjoy Wiesele - it is a relatively easy off piste line, well within the reach of any competent skier. Yes, there is a walk or skate alongside the Gallerie to get to the bus stop, but not too hard. Alas, as I said before, since it has become a designated route, it has been closed just about all the time. I won’t enter a closed run on principle.
Today was such a day of contrasts. Cold, with new snow. Zürs and Valfagehr got more than StA. Heavy fog layer in StA, but a beautiful sunny morning in Zürs. The new snow, while not exactly Utah Smoke, was a delight to ski. Came back to StA after lunch to land into a storm: 30kt winds, absolutely no visibility (full IMC! ), and -10C. Freezing cold!
Kandahar was fun skiing. Dry snow, not too many ice patches, and small moguls. It was deserted until 3pm - not why so many people arrived then (or where they came from). Snow making was turned on at 2:30pm.
The forecast suggests some sunny days for the rest of this week.

My bad. I saw it was closed on the board at Seekopf, and mistakenly assumed it was the run back to Lech from Madloch which is 173 or down to Zug 170, anyone know if these two are open?

Jealous.... Muggengrat / Täli is always worth doing before Madloch, the snow is pretty much always good and the general ambience is amongst the best I have ever skied. The high walls at the sides give a feeling of isolation and the run rarely seems to attract the sort of crowds that you find on Schindler or Madloch
