Zero-G, Thanks, it was actually closed. Most of us were on fat snowboards that belong to us so we didn't even think about it. We had fun up there even though conditions aren't fantastic. We're a mixed group and we've bought the whole are pass. Does this cover le tour and les hoches? Which of these should we try next? We're staying very close to Brevent.

Snow Hound, yup, conditions aren't great and that danged sun is blazing again this morning
If you bought the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass then you can ski Les Houches and Le Tour (plus the top of Grands Montets and Aiguille du Midi).
I've been playing tour guide to an early intermediate friend who arrived on Tuesday, so have only skied on piste at Brevent and Flegere the past two days. Heading to Le Tour today because the reds at BrevFleg were a bit much for her.
There seems to be a hint of snow forecast for mid next week. I live in hope!

The amount of melt this week does not make for a happy sight. The mountains are looking like they usually do in April. The wigglies are showing possible light snowfall next week but Cham Meteo is saying strong foehn wind. Poo.
How are things looking higher up the mountains, anyone?

Zero-G, you could give Les Contamines a go? I have a friend with a place in chamonix, though she's not there at the moment, and she said they used to head to LC sometimes and often found better conditions than in Chamonix.
It's amazing how fast the snow can disappear, especially with a foehn wind.

Today did the Grand Mur on GM late afternoon.....great snow. Morning stuck to the pistes until the off had softened a little....Lavacher bowl in very good condition. Yesterday offpiste in Le Tour, a couple of runs in Tête de Balme area....then short hike up Col de B and over/down to Triomphe(sp?) in Switzerland....mixed conditions, some debris in the couloirs/gulleys. Bus back to Vallorcine, played around in the Posettes area then down to le Buet from top of Aiguillette lift, a nice long final run.

pam w, Les Contamines – haven't heard of it, where is it?
I have half a day on piste to tomorrow and then my friend heads home. Am going to take a few days off skiing and just do a few kilometres of laps daily in the pool until Wednesday, when I head up to the Midi for three days with a guide. I trust he will find us something soft to ski!

Skied Brevent today for my friend's final morning before her return to London. Another hot day with clear blue skies. By 11.30am the top of the Cornu (about 2,400m altitude) was already turning to slush. An hour later, the pisteurs closed the Blanchots due to avy danger from the Hotel Face. Conditions are definitely more April than March

What I learnt, at the end of a very snowy season a few years ago, is that regardless of the depth of snow (which was stupendous) you only ski on the top few inches. I had innocently thought that because there was such a depth of snow, it would somehow resist the hot sun. It didn't, but at least there was no grass to be seen. Aspect becomes critically important - more important than altitude, within reason.

Don't panic Mr Mannering. It was a lovely day to ski today, (and yesterday). Warm, sunny, and good snow.
I think this winter will wag its tail a few times more.

I think so too. I have said confidently for the last two years that the second half of March will be snowy. If I keep saying it often enough it's bound to come true one day. It was true in 2006 when this picture was taken - there's a house under there!

Don't tell 'em your name jbob - I love the slush so I'm not too worried, but I'm sure you're right anyway, perhaps at the end of the week when all the Parisians have departed?

. . . Tasted pretty good at GM today. Carpark rammed to overflowing, but where were they all? Didn't stand in the slightest Q all day . . . Parisians must've been having some serious lunches

Any thoughts on which day this weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) will be the best day for a Vallee Blanche run? The various weather websites seem to suggest it might be either Sat or Sun, but not sure which would be best; we have a guide booked for Friday but wondering whether I should change...
