Patch, Mmm. Difficult to tell how much time is elapsed but the chopper seemed to be on the scene very quickly. Scary stuff. Was the skier in the initial shot the one who was caught?

pam w, I believe so. Thought to be a Russian Man, 48 years old, still missing.
That's a big slide, and very sobering footage.

Our chalet chef (boarder) was caught by the tail end of the avalanche as it was running out of steam on level ground. He said that he was buried waist deep and it took an age for the powder cloud to settle. He didn't appear to bothered by it.

A bit of light fluff around today - probably up to 10cm in places, but very warm as and when the sun was out. Cote Brune seemed to be "en panne" for the best part of the day. Afternoon visibility could best be described as 'poor'...

offpisteskiing, Good to see Norris got his powder fix! Hope it dumps on you this week. For 3V steeps do you do the Y couloir to the right of Col in VT?

The weather forecast looks very warm for the next week or so - how much snow is there in VT in terms of it withstanding plus temps for a prolonged time?

Megamum, nothing to be done, so it's probably best not to worry.

Megamum, last week there was a huge mix of different snow conditions in the Val Thorens valley. From lovely soft compacted powder to horrendous ice strewn with slushy moguls. Head high and you should be ok, but as Hurtle says, best not to worry about it. It was mostly doom and gloom about Courchevel that we heard before we went and we had one of the best ski holidays we've had!
It is what you make of it

Hurtle, I think BMF_Skier is pointing out that the conditions in Val Thorens now are similar to those that would be expected in April/May

Freddie Paellahead, it was the apparent implication that Megamum was imparting some kind of truth and others were telling porkies that puzzled me.

Well if it gets too bad I guess we'll have to organise mountain bike races!
Well, it does kind of look like a deterioration of snow might be occurring due to conditions that seem to have arrived 3-4 weeks earlier than might normally be expected. I had a report from someone that went to La Ros last week and they said that there was quite a melt on that south facing resort, but that conditions were better on the North facing La Thuile. Obviously VT has faces that go in all directions so there should be something usable somewhere - lets hope it stays until we all get there.

Snow is falling quite nicely right now (21:32) at 2300 in VT. However at village level, the fresh snow seems to melt during the day. It's not quite cold enough lower down. (our 'ski-in' is none existent.) the top up of snow on the pistes is very much welcomed. Looking forward to tomorrow's skiing. Hoping to travel to Corcheval and everything in between on the fresh snow covering.
That is all to report right now!!!

Yep, I feel very lucky, today was one of those days!
Had some sunshine at times too.
If I didn't ski again this week, I'd go home a happy man.

Heading out to Val T tomorrow evening, has anyone got any suggestions where to find the best runs / off piste at the moment. All this talk of fresh snow has me excited for the first time this season, i've about had my fill of patchy gravel skiing

Jefbenitez, high.
Rain to 2150m-ish this afternoon.
Still some good soft snow above 2800 in teh shady areas, but turning quickly anywhere its getting sun. On the flipside South facing stuff is transforming very quickly, so there should be some great corn snow if the sun would come out for more than 4 hours at a time...

Scorching day today. Pistes seem to be holding up ok in VT, although getting slushy towards the bottom as the day goes on. Not complaining about sunshine, but the temp is unbelievable!

As Buzzsaw says - very warm today!
Even the shady(ish) off-piste off Col & Glacier chairs was sun-affected, but there was some great spring snow to be had. Care needed with timings though, as there were lots of afternoon sloughs going on...
Light snow forecast above 2500/2000m tonight into tomorrow, clearing as the day goes on, then sun, sun, sun.

Kinda damp all day today - wet snow above 2500ish, but not really any appreciable fresh even up top.
Snowing to between Plattieres 1 & Mottaret this afternoon though, but clearing rapidly. Skies now clear & back to spring conditions for the next week. woop woop!

Message from S3V Lift Company (English translation):
The ski resort of Courchevel Valley / 3 Valleys stays open until the evening of Monday, April 25.
The skiing on offer depends on the evolution of the snowpack. Maintenance of the upper pistes will be strengthened to provide the best snow possible for our customers. Our methods of grooming are maintained to ensure ideal skiing conditions until late season.
As of Saturday, April 9 (instead of 16 April), pricing discounts will be applied (these will be published as soon as possible). To date, 75% of the slopes (ie more than 250 pistes) and 90% of lifts are open in the 3 Valleys. There is nowhere in the world at this time a ski area offers so many connected pistes open. To view our openings in real time, click the following link: http://www.s3v.com/hiver/Ouverture-des-pistes-p2.html
Have a good ski everyone.

Cold wind blowing today helped keep the snow in good condition right through - found some 5 star spring snow over in Orelle, real dream billiard table flat, creamy surface stuff... mmmmm!
Pistes in Val T holding up fine (see previous posts re Plan de l'Eau ) - Mottaret good in the morning, slushy bumps to the bottom in the afternoon (great fun), looks like Trout is just about holding out though haven't been down to see.

Word is that Meribel will close next Sunday, 17th April ... haven't seen confirmation of this yet, but Brit Championships are struggling and some races are being cancelled
