More snow last night, but snow line much higher - I'm guessing around 1600-1800m. Drove up the Valle di Susa yesterday evening - raining hard going past Oulx, Bardonecchia etc and around 5 deg at the Frejus. Col de Madeleine was open, surprisingly. The heavy rain fell as snow higher up, but what was white a week ago is now green again

Can anyone suggest a cheap transfer from Grenoble to Meribel. Group of 12 arriving on the 19th January.
Thanks in advance

chappers84, Try www.skihametransfers.co.uk/ although I know that's a pretty busy day for them, you never know
Snow last night above 1800m - heavy rain below. Skied at Val Thorens today, and it's looking promisiing for the opening in two weeks time. A snowman stole my skis.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Val Thorens opening - 10 days and counting...
Webcams look pretty good, but the relative lack of snow on the building roofs is an indicator of... something. Probably quite a bit of man-made in store lower down for the early adopters.
My favourite webcam for keeping an eye on Val Thorens :
http://www.livecam360.com/webcam/val-thorens/
I keep it fullscreen on a monitor in work. It's what keeps me going through November!
I'll be standing in front of it in 16 days
Snow was very good after last sundays storm, but has been receding since.
Praying for a week, next week.

joedumper, Welcome to Snowheads.
Is there a trick to keep those live webcams as a wallpaper on the screen?

I think there could be a way to do that in windows, but I'm using Mac so not sure.
What I have here is an imac on my desk that's not doing much, so it's now devoted to giving me a window to a prettier world.

Windows used to have a thing called 'Active Desktop' which effectively just made your desktop into a massive Internet Explorer window - but this was considered a security hazard (well, duh), and removed.
You can install 3rd party tools to do it nowadays I think.

Yeah, yuck, look at this - one of the main nursery slopes in the village, snipped from the webcam just now.

Mr Piehole, fair point. I am out for New Year so hoping Dec will see the snow falling
You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Three fine days in a row, with clear skies and sunshine. Temperatures are getting lower overnight, with heavy frost, but the sunshine during the day is melting the snow quickly. No precipitation forecast in the next week, but temps continue to fall gradually, and maybe we'll see some more snow late November. If not, looks like it will be cold enough for the cannons

Val Thorens today .... very busy, seemed like every skier from a hundred miles around was there, along with about half the non-skiers too. About a quarter of the resort open, most of the snow man-made but some good skiing. Some reasonable between-the-piste higher up. Nothing at all below 2300m. Snow expected in 3-4 days ... lots of it!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Patch, I was hoping you'd show up with a little report (I'm popping over to VT tomorrow).
Looked horrifically busy on the webcams. I'm hoping good old French Catholicism will see to it that the day-trippers are mostly Saturdayers and not Sundayers.
Only a quarter open sounds a bit low. I was guessing half. Oh well, since I'm only going to be pootling around with my 3 year old I only need those covered magic carpets and the Cairn/Caron gondolas up from the car park!
Mr Piehole, Even local radio was only reporting about a quarter open, so probably why it seemed so busy. A bit odd though, in that some lifts ( Portette, Cascades) seemed extremely busy (for a Saturday in November), and others (Moraine, Grand Fond) hardly any queue at all. Snow is certainly plenty good enough for pootling with a 3 year old. There is also ski testing from about 20 different manufacturers (you can't miss it), and there was even a little suinshine today.
Have fun tomorrow!

Oh, and the Cairn/Caron carpark is not even open - free parking up in the village, superbly orchestrated by local gendarmerie !!!!

Parking was a total Mongolian. Conditions on the nursery slopes were nice considering how much was man made.
They have GOT to start policing the through-traffic that races past the covered magic carpets though. There's no point having some of the best beginners slopes in the Alps, if some numpty screeches past you at 50kph every couple of yards. Offputting at very best, incredibly dangerous at worst. Today a skier, so absolutely sure of his entitlement to the tiniest little kicker off the side of the run, skied directly over the tails of my skis to get to it - whilst I was picking up a fallen crying toddler. Still, I'm sure his 0.02 seconds airborne was worth it. Cretin.
Anyway, the clouds were really gathering as we left in the afternoon. I smell snow...

..
But their screwed by design unless they make some major changes.. the run down to the peclet with the magic carpet on the right is a great learner run, but also a major through run and as you now the boarders will want to keep their speed.
I'm suprised they don't have more serious accidents..

There's two almost parallel covered magic carpets, with runs either side. That's 4 ways down, kind of. I think there's scope for one of those ways being a thoroughfare, and the others are for debutantes and 'careful others' on pain of lift pass removal...
Today there wasn't even a 'slow down' orange fence at the top at the intersection. Even dismounting the magic carpet and getting onto the main green run down the middle was like playing IRL Frogger.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

La Tania bods doing their Snow report in Val Thorens on Saturday. More lifts open than I remember on previous opening days in the last few years.

I got knocked flying from behind by a speeding boarder there. Didn't even stop to help me, the ****er. Horrible, busy area.
