Hurtle, how bad is your Geography really?
Megève is way over-rated and expensive for what it really offers in the way of skiing! You need a car or good local shuttle buses to get to the best skiing!

don't forget they're talking about revising down the "safe drinking" advice for elderly people, who, it seems, are abusing drink and drugs on a vast scale.

I absolutely LOVE Folgarida - its my favourite ski resort in Italy. I have stayed in the Kapriol and the Renzi hotel in the past - years ago a company called EquitySki used to go there but they stopped about 3 or 4 years ago although having said that I think they still go there with school groups so maybe worth a shot contacting them. Madonna is fab and reminded me of Dallas in the snow with all the fur coats and expensive shoes. The thing with Madonna is that you have to pay more to be in resort but with Folgarida, the prices are more reasonable and you access the same ski area so if you are on a budget, this is the place to stay. Its only a 15 minute taxi ride to Madonna, which we took in the evening to go out in Madonna as you have to sample the coffee shops there - Fab for people watching!!!!
Austria - Saalbach is great - nice town good skiing as well for intermediates.

Chasseur, Indeed we did, however Wayne's season seems to start in January. |
"My" season starts the week before Christmas, just working at the ski school. So I'll be around then if anyone wants to pop over and say hi
"Our" season starts the 1st week in Jan due to the cost of running trips over Christmas/new year - basically we can't complete with TO's that have their own planes. Flights are VERY expensive then and so are the hotels. In face some of the hotels don't even advertise rooms then as they have the same people coming back year after year.
We can (and do, I hope) sell trips during Jan/Feb/Mar that compare favourably with the big TO's but we simply can't do that over Christmas/new year. That's why we don't operate trips then. We have done them in the past but it's normally just for large 40+ groups (then we can forward option flights - which brings the cost down)
I know that some people will buy a ski trip on facilities, location, pistes, etc, etc but MOST people buy on price. SH's is not reflective of the ski market and, to put it politely , we need the lots of people not just a few 's, so we operate when this is likely. eg. This year (2011) I "think" we had around 40 over the whole season. This would be OK if we only has a small chalet to fill but we need to fill 6 X hotels in Folgarida and Madonna. QED !
The busiest week in Italy in the ski resorts is always the week following new year (the 1st week in Jan) as it's a national holiday and the whole country goes skiing (or so it seems)
PS.
Hi Chasseur
PPS.
Hurtle my vote for your group for Christmas = Zermat. I stayed a while back over Cristmas with Mrs W and it was really nice

The ski-resorts near Ischgl offer a good balance between great ski areas and party life. However, if the youngers are wanting to spend some wild nights, they will find lots of possibilities in Ischgl. Staying in the resorts of KAPPL, SEE or GALTÜR may offer a good solution, here you also find accomodation at reasonable prices.

alaricsmum, had looked at folgarida as a group trip option but ruled it out for lack of night life. I know you went to madonna for a few nights , but is there anything at all in folgarida itself?

My friends have found, for an increasingly unwieldy number of people, a self-catered chalet in Filzmoos, through a company called 'Skichalets', part of 'theholidaygroup'. The chalet is described as follows: "In the district Neuberg, at the end of a small settlement, alone and idyllically situated at the edge of a forest. Approx. 150 m to the ski-lifts in the ski area Filzmoos - Neuberg, close to the cross-country ski run and hiking ways."
Does anybody have any knowledge/views about this company and/or the location? Many thanks.

Pedantica, Samerberg Sue said the other day that Filzmoos was very chocolate box but the skiing is exhausted in a day. I think other reviews here say similar. I knowit is linked to the ski amade but you'd need to drive or get a bus to other villages

holidayloverxx, thanks. Does it not, then, connect up reasonably easily with other skiing? I get the impression when people talk about this area, that it is well linked.

Pedantica, how many in you party? Agreed about Filzmoos, a couple of days at best and not particularly handy for any other Amade resorts.

Pedantica, some villages are ski-linked - e.g. Flachau and Wagrain (as are others) but some are linked by short bus journeys.

Pedantica, Filzmoos is in a valley between Ramsau am Dachstein and Eben. I don't think it would suit you.
http://www.skiamade.com/en/winter/skiresorts/slopespanorama and click on Salzburger Sportswelt. Anywhere on there apart from Eben and Filzmoos.
The Hochkonig area is also apparently very nice.

Frosty the Snowman, plus one for the Hoch Koenig area.
Pedantica, Contact Haus Wasserbauer for info about that region as he runs a B&B in that area. Another snowHead who knows the area well is Espri. I've not been to the Hoch Koenig for quite a few years now, a situation I am determined to remedy next season.
The biggest inter-linked areas are:
1. St Johann/Alpendorf - Wagrain - Flachau - Zauchensee (with the associated satellite resorts of Flauchau-Winkl and Kleinarl)
2. Reiteralm - Hochwurzen - Plainai-Hauser Kaibling - Haus-ins-Ennstal (collectively under Schladming)
3.Grossarl - Bad Hofgastein - Bad Gastein (but you link with buses from Bad Hofgastein to BG)
The Hoch Koenig is made up of three main villages: Muelbach, Dienten and Maria Alm, the latter being the prettiest village as I remember. they have linked up the villages since I was last there and improved the skiing immensely.
