Great shot but the only one I want to see now is the one of it having stopped.

Unless NATS change their attitude we could be in for a long siege.

The previous eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, whose ash cloud has shut down airspace over Britain, lasted for more than a year, according to an expert. |

Belgian airspace closed at 1630 and were due to reopen again at 2000. Sky news have just reported that they've just had an update that they're not now opening until 1800 tomorrow...

Looking at the jet stream forecasts, it's going to get worse before it gets better - at least until 22nd.

Of course there may be no truth in this but I heard that Unite members were seen arriving in Iceland recently carry picks and shovels.
Call it just a coincidence if you want but …………

under a new name, there's no such thing as 'common sense' on this one, since the common citizen does not have sufficient information to make a decision. What I am not clear about is whether or not NATS does. Forecast particle density is one thing - knowing if it is actually there is another. Nobody in the media seems to have asked the question. I get the impression that nobody is trying to find out - maybe it is difficult to do so. Once up on a time we had a specially equipped Hercules which might have done the trick - but it is no longer available. Even so, if the eruption continues anything like as long as last time the authorities will have to try and find a way of coping with it - which would be a change of attitude. Limited flying into the area and monitoring engine condition after each flight by research aircraft might be a start.

Let's see what a nights insight does do the situation.
The problem I got with flying out Saturday is How soon do I book Train tickets(before they run out) against the chance of the flights happening and I don't get refunded

Yes snowymum, my mum who works at a private aircraft engineering company confirmed all civil aviation and small planes are carrying on as normal.

Yep, controlled airspace only closed from what I've seen, would have been a nice day for flying if it wasn't for work!

Not looking good this morning. No flights in or out of English airports until at least 7 pm today and it's not too promising beyond that ... I am a little bit stuck ... as are a few dozen guests who are looking for a solution. So far one lot have made a bid for freedom: minibus to Lyon, train to Paris, another train to Calais, foot passangers on the ferry ...and then pick up from Dover. Extreme measures!

ctskifam, Ouch .... you might look at the Eurozone - Train booking sites (SNCF in this case) ... a colleague managed to book all the way back to London from Antibes last night for today.

Agenterre, trains are not looking too good at the mo for anything near the Alps, rammed! May have to think along lines of coach to Lille and then Eurostar to London. We got a few staff home yesterday who had to make it back for a wedding but the route was v complex - not practical for families with kids in tow.

The way things are going some airlines and travel operators will go bust, I suppose. Insurers will take a big hit, too.

Argh! What to do... I can move to a later Saturday flight with Easyjet just in case things open up or I can cut my losses now and book a ferry and drive the damn trip instead. I'm currently booked on the 9:25 from Luton, but I Can move to 12:30-ish or 4:30-ish without penalty at present. Is it likely to open up by then? If it does, is it likely to close again? Will there be huge backlog issues? These are the unknown factors... The way it's been going, I can see an announcement by this afternoon stating that airspace is shut until midday Saturday at least coming up...

achilles, they won't have any operating costs if they don't start the plane engines. FlyBe spokesperson this morning said the winter weather cost them more as they had to buy deicing fluid.

Dwarf Vader, . I'm looking at our options for next weekend, and debating if I should change a Eurotunnel booking I have for July to next weekend. I can always change it back again should it not be needed . We would have space for two more in the car with roofbox for skis, so petrol costs could be shared.

O no, just getting worse! To Europe you can still eventually get by train, what if the volcano does not stop for months like last time it erupted-
Husband will have to take the boat to South Africa!

Look on the bright side. A really big volcanic eruption could reverse global warming.
