FAIL.
Either your not as good as you think you are, take a second to ask yoursefl, why is the 'risk' too great if your skill level can match it???
Or you just don't have the bottle for it.
Sounds like you are ready to become a ski instructor. Loser.

Chris this thread really is n't about skiing. Find out where you want to be and what you want to do. If skiing doesn't do it for you at the moment leave it. Return when you have the urge. There is no need to make such a final decision. I am often envious of the likes of you, with a home in the mountains, ski when you like in the winter, cycle in summer. I cycle to work, it would be great to be able to ski there. Perhaps the novelty would wear off if I lived in it, but I doubt it.

chris, I don't really see what the problem is. If you're one of these people that moves on from hobby to hobby once you've gotten what you can out of each one, then why not just continue doing so?
This might work better on the swap shop thread but if you've got a place in Serre Che you'd want to swap for a heavily mortgaged 3-bed end of terrace in a grim corner of Derbyshire, I might be interested. Snigger...

chris, I think if you do the same thing for many years, there's always a risk it will eventually become mundane and boring. I don't ski anywhere near often enough to get bored, but I have reached that point with other sports. I don't go mountain biking half as much as I used to and I'm thoroughly bored of my job, even though it was once my ultimate ambition. Some of us like change in our lives, others are more content with routine. Sounds like you need a change.

chris, that comment from Parlor was mean.
I was wondering;
1. are you depressed (really)
2. try telemarking/touring - as others have suggested- a change from Alpine might bring in a totally fresh start- without risking anything
3. risk- how old are you? over 60 or 70 if not then try and get a bit fitter/ better
4. I can see how someone might feel like this near the end of the season - I would love to ski that much to get jaded...

chris, learn to snowboard. Alternatively, buy a yacht, learn to sail and push off round the world on the high seas. Why not?

yes, the only time I've ever felt jaded with skiing was at the end of the one season I did. And I wasn't jaded so much with the skiing, as with the resort and the interminable ski-talk.

chris, just a different idea, but maybe you could get satisfaction from helping someone else enjoy the mountains. I get the impression that there are many disabled skiers out there who need competant and trustworthy guides to be with them on the mountain. Maybe volunteering for that sort of role would float your boat.

You know it makes sense.

The point is: eventually skiing, like anything else eventually becomes everyday - it doesn't mean you don't enjoy it, just that you can't do it all day, every day. This is not odd - just normal. How many people really enjoy driving any more? Could you do it all day, every day? Probably not, so Chris it's not an either/or. Just change the way you think about it.

Absolutely. Doesn't the same thing apply to any other sport or leisure activity? I like sailing, but I wouldn't want to do it all day every day - but I don't therefore conclude that it's time I gave up sailing. If you buy an apartment in the Algarve with a view to playing golf, that doesn't mean you have to play golf all the time.
"Bimbling around with friends" is a good description of what we do a fair bit of the time. Indeed one big "plus" of having our apartment has been the opportunity to catch up and spend quality time with friends.

chris, doing things doesn't have to be for kicks. If you get no satisfaction from doing things which objectively you know are exciting, maybe you need to look at yourself. Just what are your motivations?

Skiing is a bit like making love! When youv'e tried everything, you don't just pack it in, you concentrate on the things you enjoy the most, doing them again and again, until it's just right. You may wish to time yourself, or make a recording. At the moment I am wearing a head cam. I have strapped it to my helmet!

chris, I know how you feel. I've been skiing for over twenty years. It's been something which I think about at least once a day in some shape or form - I've spent huge amounts of money on it, spent time doing it when (maybe) I should have been doing other things. I've probably even lost friends over it - certainly I can think of a few friends who just didn't get how much I was into skiing and for that reason they maybe became less friendly. I know that I don't really just like skiing though, I like the whole mountain/lifestyle aspect, not just getting about on skis. I'm not a thrill seeker, either. But, like you, I have had moments where I fear that the passion has gone. Actually I suspect it has changed slightly over time. And now when I look back at how I felt when I first skied 20 years ago, it was a very different feeling to the one I have now.
Losing a passion is quite scary. As someone else has said, seriously, it can be a sign of depression. Assuming it's not though, I think you maybe need to not over examine your feelings too much. Ski with your friends and ski for the simple pleasure of being with other people in a fantastic place. Try skiing with some new people too, people you've never skied with before.
I can only speak from my own experience but the times when I've felt like I think you're feeling I've tried to get back to what it is I found in skiing in the first place. I don't think you can do this on an internet forum, I think you'll need to look at what motivates/drives you in "real" life. I actually think one of the things which has made me less interested in skiing has been this place, ( but don't tell anyone I said that!! ).
I can understand why you've posted your feelings. I hope that those who have shown that you're not alone in this feeling have helped you in someway.
My worry about living in the mountains would be that I would one day wake up and realise that the place had become just another day, any day, rather than a special day. Maybe you need to just take some time out.
Anyway, it's not unusual to question how you feel about something, actually I think it's probably quite healthy.
Best of luck - keep smiling.

Suppose it's more the risk / reward ratio. Many top level skiers & guides have perished, it doesn't matter how skilled / experienced you are there is always the risk you will get caught out. There's also the issue of dependents etc as was touched on in the McConky thread. Perhaps there comes a time when someone thinks - I'm not getting paid for doing this or will become good enough to be paid (the reverse is normally true), I'm not getting the fun out of it that I used to, to get any kick out of it I'm going for steeper gnarly terrain and increasing the risks (e.g. avalanche, no fall zones etc), perhaps it's time I do something else that gives me more enjoyment for less risk especially as I have dependents.
Must admit everytime I read a report where an offpiste skier / ski tourer dies I feel a little bit guilty and think that could of been me. Would it be fair to the people who I would leave behind?
