I have yet to come across a leisure walking map that is accurate

Walkers are more woodsmen while mountain bikers are more teckys!
In various cycling sites, it's now quite a common thing to have collection of "route files" contributed by users. Basically, turn your GPS on tracking mode while riding, then download the track to the computer and then upload it to the site for sharing. When enough people carry GPS and contribute their tracks, you have a map covering all the usable routes!
When I took my mountain bike to southern California, I was amazed at how accurate and complete the mountain bike trail maps are. Much better than the one handed out by the forest service.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Thanks to everyone who has commented, it is going to aid me greatly, if anyone else has more to add it would be appreciated. My current thoughts are heading towards a outdoor extreme style mobile phone, but targeting those sports where you need quick access and easy functions for people with gloves for example. Does this sound a better solution than a wrist mounted Navigation unit? I still would like it to be easily accessible, without having to stop and take it out of a pocket or jacket. Any thoughts are welcome...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

toogie71, One quick thought, any display needs to be easily readable outdoors. I gave up on a perfectly adequate Samsung mobile phone because although OK indoors, you could hardly see the display outside.

New display technologies, like OLED, will solve this problem by 2010.
