What do you all think of Atomic Redster Q9.8 for me? |
Likely above your level. Q9 probably a better bet, G9 if you want the full on ice grip experience.

@Je suis un Skieur, yes this one is interesting.
I have a trashed left ACL. Really trashed.
I was recommended 69-70 for years and indeed stuck with those.
One day I found some Salomon MaiTais in one of the cupboards and gave them a go.
Yes, I also had read that 100+ puts quite an angular moment on the knee, and thus … they hurt. I read it from reputable sources and internalised that. So….I stuck with 69-70. But then I found that there’s far more to it than that.
But what I immediately found with the 86mm waist was that it reduced impacts A LOT on hard pack, and encouraged the skis to ride swiftly up peaks in chop and slop, again reducing pain a great deal. It really was a significant reduction in vibration and impact when landing from minor ups and jumps on everyday piste surfaces. It may not be for you, but it was an obvious and significant improvement for me. My favourite ski now is an 86 waist negative camber Volkl Mantra….which proves great on all surfaces from boiler plate to slop.
I think the immediately obvious thing was impact after even small air.
86 waist - forgiving and smooth, nice.
69 waist - bang! Ow!
Objective measure? How swollen is my knee after a normal day of mixed skiing?
86 waist - marginal and not terribly noticeable
69 waist - obvious and football-like

Intresting about the knees and ski width, I am trying a wider ski for the first time next week. Website says it will be a head kore 84. Im the same weight as the OP at 230lbs athletic build and usually ski on a rossignol hero elite st ti r22 now. I used this ski to progress to advanced (instructors opinion not my own) from being an intermediate on a very similar ski to what the OP doesn't like. So i will be able to give my opinion to OP on the difference between the two come early February. The alternative premium ski to the head kore was a narrower head XSR? I think, no metal in it.

@Glosterwolf, …re metal….width and then FLEX.
My son rejected some Faction 2.0s which he had as being ‘far too noodly’.
Basically, you pick them up and then they sag like a Dali painting.
They redefine ‘soft’.
He is a hard-charging 18 year old (60lbs, 175cm tall) and has been on some stiff Volkls recently, fine tuning his ‘railed arcs’. Bearing in mind he can edge in a way which means he can do short turn on ice, these really are railed turns.
He then phoned saying - actually I went back onto the Factions after railing the Volkls and I can now bend the Factions into a banana shape and REALLY rail them. I am back on them again.
Interesting.
So it’s back to what everyone experienced on here says:
Technique.
And then
Technique
True

I am an intermediate skier and I love groomers and going fast. I am an east coast skier through and through. |
Not quite sure why anyone would be recommending a wide ski for someone who just enjoys going fast on piste, or am I missing something else in a follow-up post? Get yourself a good piste-specific ski, you don't need anything wider than a 70mm waist. |
Don't disagree with the principle but what actual ski would you recommend? It's a tricky balance having a 70mm ski that's stiff enough to support a 230lbs bloke but not so stiff or unforgiving that it punishes intermediate technique, is it not? |
Not really. Trying to find a ski to compensate for lack of technique is a fool's game, but honestly any nearly-race level GS piste ski will fit the bill. Maybe not a Slalom ski for an intermediate, may be too reactive, not because of stiffness but just due to their turn radius.

Well if you can't ski on those you might as well give up. In a 178cm I trust.
Seriously, if you've got the budget then buy them - Stocklis will make you a better skier and the AX is a better choice for you than the AR. But make sure you buy the right length. At your weight, you must be on at least the 178cm. Half the reason you hate your Navigators is that they're way too short for you.

@Mogulmasher hired some in the BB and loved them. I tried them and couldn't get the tips to engage very well. We're all different!

Great that you got sorted.
I bought some skis on a whim many years ago. And after a week on them I knew they weren't right for me.
