Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The 2023 Easter ski thread

@Owlette, I think I recall your thread asking for Easter recommendations - great that you acted on the recommendations. Daughter had her phone confiscated at school two days in a row for checking the webcams and snow conditions, I am impressed you have managed to keep it from your boys! Have a fantastic time.

The reason your daughter had her phone confiscated made me laugh. I had a cheeky look whilst I was in the classroom doing some paperwork too, whilst the children were outside. Just hoped SLT didn't walk in (they didn't).

That thread was what tipped hubby over and agree to it. I'm always so appreciative of the considered replies I get on here.

Our bedroom looks like a bomb has hit it at the moment as I'm making sure I have everything, so it's all laid out in piles. Though I bought Boy11 two new pairs of ski socks in Lidl about three weeks ago. One pair has now vanished. He's been enjoying wearing them as they are comfortable apparently. Knew I should have hidden them in the salopettes bag.

Showed Boy11 the 1950 webcam yesterday. He said 'wow, where's that, can we go there one day'.

Back to St Martin for me, Mr P and the dog. We're on the 6.36am Eurotunnel crossing on Sunday 2nd, and with a clear run, we should be at the house by 5.30ish. This week we have the honour of hosting @bergmeister and Mrs Bergmeister for supper, hopefully preceded by making some fresh tracks in the new snow on Monday. We then have a couple of days off before Mr P's niece, husband and 2 small children (2 and 4) come for easter weekend-so slightly more low key (on the skiing front at least) at that point!

Just looked up the snow report and it's getting exciting.

Does anyone know what time of day the snow is likely to be nicest for Le Tunnel run? I've not done it before, it's on my bucket list but only in nice enough snow!

@Owlette, why not just tell the school? I know it won't be authorised but 1 day shouldn't trigger the fine?

We did similar last Friday before Christmas. My girls missed that last half day (school finished at 12:30, but we left on a 7:30ish flight out of Bournemouth).

I did think this week that we should have just done that. However, my own HR (I also work in a school) are absolute nightmares for time off in term time. In November, I asked to leave an hour early so that I could catch the coach to Heathrow for a weekend away. They initially denied it until I pointed out that I had 15 hours of training that was outside my contracted hours, yet according to them, mandatory, that I hadn't yet claimed for. They back pedalled then and granted me the hour.

I'd already spoken to my class team ahead of making the request and they were fine with it, it was HR that were being difficult.

Had I been in either of my previous schools, it would have been a non-issue as the Head granted the leave and I had an excellent relationship with both. I'd likely have just taken it as TOIL. Didn't even bother trying with my HR this time. I'll take the day a dependancy leave, which I've never done since working there as hubby WFH, so he is around for sick children.

As an added bonus, we get to surprise them. Boy11 asked hubby last night if we could go away over Easter. Said he didn't want to stay home for two weeks. He asked if we could visit either set of grandparents. We've told him that they're all working (true) but we'll plan some things to keep him busy.

We’ve been before at Easter and always had good snow - although not always classic powder days. It’s not been their snowiest season but pretty much everything is still open. And more snow forecast this weekend.

It is always mentioned as a good snowsure venue for Easter - the season at Sunshine runs till end of May.

@TommyJ, thankyou. For some reason got it into my head it wouldn't. I have been looking to try and book 10 days there for 2024/25 as that year as 2025 is the big 5 0 for me and Hubby. Originally thinking over New Year so hubbys birthday is in resort, but watching flight prices this year on release Shocked

So maybe Easter could work better

You want more than a week off for Canada. So we’ve chosen Easter over Xmas because of the weather. You run the risk of ridiculously low temps earlier in the season - not good when our son was learning to ski

I asked a friend who was senior to all the local school 'heads' whether to ring in sick or tell the truth. He said to ring in sick as way less paperwork for the school to deal with!

Tignes Val Claret 1st - 8th. Getting the train (Travelski) with the kids for the first time. Remembering belatedly how much I didn't like overnight train last time I did Eurostar years ago so I'm a bit apprehensive. Figure the Saturday when we arrive knackered after very little/no sleep is a bonus day that we wouldn't have got had we flown and at least I won't be stuck on a 4 hour transfer coach with no toilet on it from Grenoble like normal.

They changed the times from Sat morning train to Friday evening so I'm also having to take the kids out of school tomorrow. I just told the school the truth though because I'm crap at lying and the kids are ridiculously excited so no doubt everyone at school knows where they're going anyway. My 12 year old will want to ski all day, every day so I'll be dragged down black runs instead of getting to drink aperol on a terrace in the afternoon (which is what my old lady legs would prefer!)

I'd like to get the train one year, but I think hubby is apprehensive about the overnight element. He reckons he'll be uncomfortable and miserable (he's 6'2, I'm 5'0 so hhs argument is usually that he doesn't fit like I do).

Boy11 asked again this morning I'd we REALLY are staying home. He's desperate to get away. Wait until he finds out he's not going to school tomorrow.

Currently sat on my lunch break. This time tomorrow I'll be 10 minutes from Calais, on the Chunnel.

@Owlette, Being 6'4" I can say any form of transport is pretty rubbish. Planes usually the worst IME. Trains depend on the seating arrangement. Driving on the type of car obv.

Cool!! Smile Enjoy!!

The train is.... hmmm.... I'm sure there's a thread on here about it.

I'm only 5' 11 and it wasn't very comfortable for me. We even had the Standard Premier seats and... well! They adjust but not the backs of them, just the bottom of the seat, which just seemed to make them more uncomfortable!!

Saying that, the journey back was very pleasant!

We were on the slopes before lunchtime Smile

I would check out the youtube "reviews" of the train.. such as this one
http://youtube.com/v/7oScG28dQkQ or the Ski Podcast - there are a couple which feature the snowtrain.

And travelling overnight it's never going to be like sleeping in a bed but if you can somehow make yourself cosy enough and find a reasonably comfortable position you can get enough I reckon.

so i booked a Hotel in Les Houches for Freitag the 7th April.
Intend to start round 04.00 am, reach the area mentioned around 10.00 am , skiing as much as possible, eat, go to Hotel, then a little bit relaxed walking in Chamonix or Megeve , eat - sleep and next day the 8th drive till La Plagne with a stopover for groceries etc in Albertville

Lets see how will goes

I'm figuring that normally we get a flight at 7am which means getting to the airport for 5am so leaving house at 4am and waking up at 3am. So we never get more than a few hours sleep the night before anyway. So, whilst the train overnight is almost certainly going to suck, so does flying. And this way we get an extra day to get a bit of skiing in if not too knackered. I'm still dreading it though. The day train on the way home should be pleasant enough and saves hideous bus transfer, airports and driving home.

Take a pillow / neck thing. If you're in Premier then you'll get some complimentary food and beverages and ear plugs, eye mask and socks. If not, pick some ear plugs and an eye mask up!!

The train is okay, we found it a bit noisy once we were about 1-2 hours into France.

There were spare seats in our carriage so we moved about a bit to get extra leg room.

Others might have better tips.

@Handy Turnip, am also off to La Plagne, this weekend with 2 other families comprising 9 snowHead in all (big and small, the smalls all have snowHead accounts as they've been on bashes!), we're making it the alt- SFaB for 2023! We've got a chalet booked at the side of the Dou de Praz piste, I'll see if we can rig up a mini-SH banner of sorts so you can wave if you go past!

Big decision in the next 48hrs is whether or not to get just LP passes or full area ones now the snow has picked up. They're both sooooooo expensive, a few extra € isn't going to hurt!

Full area - we had it last season and it made a big difference. Although saying that we went across to Les Arcs from La Plagne on 2 days. If you're only likely to go across on one day then it might not be worth it.

It gave us the flexibility and we avoided the low stuff which was horrible then. We headed towards the low stuff but didn't bother after day 1 or 2 as it was just thin and slushy even early on.

I'm trying to work out where to put my snowheads stickers!!

We're in Les Arcs with full ski area passes. So looking to go up Bellecote before it changes from the end of this season I think.

Excitement level is rising!! Just need to pack!

Love that!! I'll make sure we take detour to go down Dou de Praz - I'll be on the lookout!

We've got the kids with us so only have la plagne passes (not enough time to get across and back before their lessons end), however if we weren't then I'd definitely get the full area pass. Some of those tree lined red runs in Les Arcs are some of my favourites.

Yes I will be in Auffach, it’s not too busy this week but between the ski schools I work for we have 3 or 4 large English school groups and it's sure to be full of German and other European school groups who think it isn't necessary to use actual ski teachers with all of the chaos that brings. Usually we see them with 30 kids to one teacher blocking the exits from the lifts or lined up across the width of the piste rolling eyes
