Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I wish I had that level of dedication! The only time I was first of a chairlift last season (literally on the first chair out of the station) was a lovely powder day in Les Arcs. Unfortunately after I'd travelled about four pylons the lift stopped and was put into reverse so I was last into the bottom station. Getting off a backwards travelling chairlift was quite tricky!

I put 3 weeks, it was actually 1 full week, a 4 day extended weekend and 5 day trips at home. 15 days altogether.

Deeply envious of the 4 weeks+ brigade Sad

... but only 23 days till I'm off to L2A snowHead

Alastair, I think that that needs a scale, like "When did you take you ski boots off?".

Hardcore would respond in increasing order of severity:

"in the nightclub", "after the nightclub", "I didn't", "I haven't"...

I'd be very softcore then....I'm too tired to even go to the nightclub!!

5 weeks...but three were only 5 days instead of 6 so maybe they shouldn't count? I've picked >4 anyway!

Frosty the Snowman beware we went 1 week/season, 2 weeks/season, 3 weeks/season, then leapt straight in a 5 weeks and have been going that often ever since! You'd best start saving....

Hoppo, as to how many weeks riding i did do, that is impossible for me to answer as there were off days obviously!

there are 15 weeks of the season.
i was on honeymoon for half of one, but i did ride down the luc alphond on my wedding day in 2 foot of powder (now that was cool!)

I would say after discounting the off days i rode for 12 or 13 weeks

WOW I'm amazed!

oh my ridind days are normally first lift till 4 (got to drop off and pick up daughter) and when i'm working (2 mornings per week) 12 till 4. Dont stop for lunch that is what chairlifts and sarnies are for!

roll on dec 2006 Very Happy

Only chairlifts?

I enjoyed my lunch dragged on in something that was described as "Teleski difficile" on the Tignes/Val d'Isere pistemap...

Ronald, you want a leisurely lunch, hence chairlifts! "Teleski difficile" are for reading the piste maps, taking photos, and depending on how much was consumed with lunch, doing the actions of YMCA whilst attempting an Irish jig. It went horribly wrong one year...

I got three weeks in this year (limited to school holidays - last time), including my solo expedition to Morzine on a last minute deal at February half-term. I'm already on two holidays next year (my school's which I am returning to help with - at leats one in uni term time), I'm also hoping to go for New Year and at least one other week. My university are going to wonder who I am come the end of the year!

Skiing day. Depends who I'm with. On my own it was just after first lift (I'm slow at getting ready) until last lift with a quick snack break, with the family at Christmas it was 10-5 with an hour lunch. Whereas on school trips it was just four hours whilst the others were in lessons (insurance reasons meaning we couldn't ski without a teacher - it'll be different next year!).

Apres-Ski. I can mix it. With the family it was just a couple of hours, on my own it consisted of two nights in town for a short period and then socialising in the chalet. However, one thing that our (rugby playing) school cannot be beaten on, is drinking! Very early (usually around lunch!) until very late (and let's leave it at that!).

good return on your gorm ST then ? How many days is break even ?

Yep, my best ever. Did 15 or was it 16 days at the gorm though the last couple in May I just took the funicular up folowed by the Ptarmigan tow to show willing and then headed straight over the back to the good snow (don't tell CML management - naughty Dave heading out of the ski area wink ). Breakeven is about 9 days if you buy your season ticket before end of September, but I reckon its worth buying a season ticket if you can gaurantee at least 7 days because of the other advantages.

1) If its busy (and you've got your own kit) no queuing for tickets
2) If its busy and CML are limiting tickets no worries on beeing too late to get a ticket (CML limit tickets when the snow is limited)
3) 10% off food and drink in the restaurants (except booze Sad )
4) No worries if the weather is crap (but it never is in Scotland is it wink just a bit challenging on ocasions!) so can pack in early without worrying about how much you've spent on a day ticket (the yorkshireman coming out in me!)
5) Free use of the funicular for the rest of the year (not sure thats much of a bonus)

This year my 15-16days at CML were almost entirely on good snow often skiable from top to bottom and outwith the fenced runs, previous years a fair % of my skiable days have been on limited snow, like just the Ptarmigan bowl. This years ST has already been purchased - hopefully £250 well spent!

Maybe we need a poll: How long is your typical ski-week? Wink

Yes. Then we need another poll to ask how long is your ski day. That way we'll really know who are the hardcore skiers who spent the most number of hours skiing each season.

Wink

Then we need another poll : How long is your ski hour?
How much of your typical hour are you actually skiing, rather than queueing, or on lifts, or eating, or resting or taking photos or chatting?

Well, I find that about half the time I'm waiting for the group to catch up and reform (and then the last arrivals are exhausted and want a moment to rest before we go on again). Or someone is wanting to video or be videoed, or the guide is standing there and naming every peak in sight.

Which of course leads to: what is your ratio of skiing to up-lifting? - there was a time when I was pleased to be able to ski a piste in the same time as it took me to get up it: now as I get better the skiing seems to be far less, and the rests between a far bigger % (and, as the age creeps up, far more necessary!), despite the increase in no. of high-speed quad thingys.

I guess the next thing is to try this skinning up the hors pistes malarky and see if we can get the ratio even more skewed.

That'll do it - my touring week this year I was taking about 4 hours up for 30 mins down (and that was stopping quite a bit on the way down too)!

I will suggest that maybe, as I'm currently on the other side of the fence, that saisonniers aren't counted? To get a worthwhile total you need to be fully employed at a non-ski job (or as house-husband or house-wife)...??

It's all too easy to notch up 120 days skiing when it's your job...

Leading on to - how many days did you really ski for yourself, hard and pushing your own particular envelope????
