How quiet is it usually in mid-Dec around the Sella Ronda areas? Thinking about coming 10-17, but quite a lot of the accomodation is already booked out in most of the major villages which surprised me slightly for so early in the season.

There are FIS world cup races 16-17 December in Val Gardens and 18-19 December in Alta Badia which may influence accommodation. Sorry can't help you on how busy it would be on piste, as I only go in January and March.

It'll be quiet on the slopes, towns might appear a little busier. I think a lot of places will take bookings for the weekend of the WC and show no availability for the week as a result. I was out in 2017 and had a great week. Empty slopes good piste. I'm heading out on the 10th for a week.
Put an open request in the valgardena.it website, you'll be inundated with good offers.

All things considered, I have made a late call to take my kids out to Selva on the 11th for a week. I've done this for the last few years and it's been brilliant. But previously the snow has come a little earlier and more plentiful that it has done this year. However, it's cold and there is a bit more snow in the forecast so hopefully all will be well.

New black variant at San Vigilio (Kronplatz).
The “dog leg” is, I think, Erta which is the black used for the Womens World Cup.
The variant looks shorter and presumably steeper

Had a nice relaxed and relieved ski down an empty original black, after a frantic dash to catch the last gondola up, as the liftie pulled the ‘closed’ rope across, about 3 seasons ago
Not sure that new dogleg steeper overall but the camber looks a bit more challenging.

@easyanae, based on just one visit that week of the season, 5 years ago, most sections of the SR, and especially the interesting offshoots, were gloriously quiet.
As often the case, in my experience, certain parts of the Alta Badia area were busiest but don’t recall a single lift queue or overcrowded piste of any note.

Considering how bad things looked a couple of weeks ago a good turn around.
Now instead of worrying if it will snow you can worry about if it melts, or if it snows to much and the roads are blocked.

The next milestone looks like Wednesday in preparation for the public holiday on the 8th, referred to by Geomar above.
From the SD website it looks like the Marmalada and Alp di Suisa are scheduled to open on wednesday, including the Pilat back into Ortiesi. After that it looks like the plan is to get most things open by Christmas, presumably including the Great War Tour.
The damp air looks to be delaying snow making today but the Alta Badia is reporting that 69% of runs are now prepared for the season so there should be time to finish the rest over the next 3 weeks.
Today there were 81 lifts open in the Sella Ronda and 21 down the road at Kronplatz.

I was at Kronplatz this weekend, it's a bit far for me (living in Feltre/Belluno) but one of the earliest open so went for a couple of runs with the family.
Stayed on top of Kronplatz sat afternoon, sunday skied on my own because the weather was not exactly super fine, while my girlfriend and son went to enjoy the christmas market. After 1 run from the top (whiteout) decided to stay down lower around the passo Furcia area. Dropped into San Vigilio, on the other side did the Erta black a couple of times, Piculin was still closed. The new variant next to the Erta wasn't open. After a while the fun was dropping because in the valley it started to really rain. Only from about 1400m it changed to snow.
Sunday afternoon we drove back but avoided the Falzarego pass because I had forgotten my snowchains, so we took the long way around via Cortina. Still snowing quite a lot.
First time poster... been lurking around for a while though.
Not sure how to post pics.

Anyone got any knowledge of how the world cup races will affect the Val Gardena ski area next week? Just the Saslong slope closed or will that whole area/lifts etc be a no-go?
|
|
|
|
|
|
In previous seasons, only the race course closed. Also access to the underground train to the Col raiser can mean a longer walk to avoid the race finish area.

To my understanding Saslong is closed, Saslong B I believe is open so those with tickets for up the hill can ski down. On race days you need a ticket to use the bubble.
My first visit to Val Gardena, I stayed in a single room, en suite with fridge, at the foot of the Saslong, €36 per night.
Weather looks quite harsh this coming weekend. Plenty schnee though. Heading to Selva on Saturday.

Hi
Quick bit of Taxi advice please.
I'm staying in Selva next week and want to spend a day skiing at Kronplatz, assuming the Piculin lift is running? A taxi from Selva is €136 each way. So, I thought I'd ski from Dantercepies to Corvara to the end of the Borest lift. I recon can be there for 9.15am having caught the first lift out of Selva at 8.30am.
Can anybody recommend a Taxi firm in Corvara that I could arrange to collect me and a given time / meeting place to run me up the road to Piculin, which is about 25mins drive and then arrange with them to meet me again in the afternoon and run me back Corvara. Needs to be a reliable firm, I don't just want to chance it on the day as I will be meeting other people in Kronplatz and time will be tight.
Thanks.

@Jcosh, there is a ski bus connecting Alta badia to piculin. It runs every 20 min from sporata (badia). The journey is 20 min and free of charge, at least in the morning there is no need to take a taxi .

Yes no need to pay and yes Kronplatz is definitely worth a visit. Ski down from Sponata towards the bottom of the chair bear right to the bus stop ‘connecting skiers’. Get out at Piculin. Reverse that to get home. Map here (right of La Villa).
https://www.bergfex.com/alta-badia/panorama/
From Selva you will want an early start.

When visiting Kronplatz from Arabba, I usually aim for the 14.45 ish return from Piculin, which gives about 90 minutes for a leisurely return from Badia.
I have caught the later bus, but the timing was tight.
You should be able to get to back to the top of Dantercepies well inside 1 hour from Badia

Hi. Thank you.
Yes, I have caught the bus from the bottom of Sponata previously. But its a lot of extra lifts and skiing to get there form Corvara. Does the bus not stop in Corvara?

OK thanks. Ive done that trip before and its to much skiing at this time of year with the kids so I'll have to revert to a Taxi from Corvara to either the bus pick up or maybe easier to stay in Taxi further up the road to Piculin.
So, reverting to my original question, does anybody know of a reliable Taxi firm that I can book in advance?

Quick question for those who know the area. Can you access the Gran Paradiso/Sotsaslong/Comici lifts directly from the midstation of Piz Seteur gondola? It seems so but not totally certain from the map.

there is a bus from Corvara to Bruneck (number 460) ; According to the timetable the Piculin bus stop is a 5 minute walk to the lift station (maybe different in Ski season)
https://www.suedtirolmobil.info/en/
Or maybe just get it to the Sponata stop?

Kronplatz is now three quarters open with 103/120kms and 28/33 lifts operational.
Sella Ronda is reporting about 167 lifts and 365 kms open. Full opening is scheduled for the 22nd December.
The Alta Badia is reporting 84% of their slopes open and piste depths of 64cms at 2195m and 49cms at 1546m
Snow making appears to have been reduced perhaps because they are nearly finished now?

A good base seems to be going down. I'm off to San Martino di Castrozza in late Jan and it's looking good although quite a lot not opened and the weather a bit grey for those there now, but it is early days.
