Guides/instructors very much use licensed sets. You're not going to be able to buy an off the shelf, ready to go radio which will be compatible. |
and (as you will know) they use a relay system so they can radio from valley to valley. My ski club had some sets but I only ever used them on a training course (you needed a license anyway) - I remember a bit of a faff getting connected to a relay on la Grande Rochette to call the PGHM in Bourg St Maurice from the valley we were in (somewhere off the back of the Aiguille Rouge). We were just doing radio checks with the PGHM by arrangement for the course.
Overkill for just managing a group though and certainly not something to be saying "little drum to big drum, drinks in the Folly in 15 minutes" ! I suspect guides might have PMRs for backmarker management as well although all the guides I know seem to be very minimalist in the tech they carry.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@davidof, I have two handsets which are identical, but only one is programmed to the relays, etc. for the PGHM. The other one I can give to a back marker and just use a local frequency. Even so, you have to pay for use of a frequency channel (I share with a ski-school for whom I do a lot of freelance work).

Hi @philwig I must have spent about 9 months of every lunch hour listening to CW at 12 words per minute so that I could get my HF ticket.
Anyway I got there in the end and now its all been dumbed down, never mind.
I don't think I have my licence anymore though .. I would have to join the RSGB again to recover it.
Something else to think about if I ever get around to retiring.
