Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Why isn’t Grenoble getting more love?

Because it's fairly far out from where most of us would want to ski, whereas the others you mention are not.

Salzburg/Ski Amade area would be another option, although probably a slightly shorter season than you'd get if based near some of the higher resorts in French Alps

The actual surroundings on the ground were just standard urban tarmac and utiltarian retail outlets. But it struck me as I waited by the car that the wider environs were pretty stunning.

It's a a stunning valley, isn't it.

I absolutely love the Tarantaise valley and have stayed in many of the villages, so no opposition for that location from me and the support already on thread certainly emphasizes the attributes well.

Sierre I feel is a good consideration as a contrast though, and with many very enticing, contrasting, ski areas of it's own. Along with the historic element and a whole valley flank of north facing slopes to assist end of season conditions too, it fulfills a significant part of the brief.

@ski3, I’ve only skied from a base in Switzerland about 3 or 4 times. Even so, I’m surprised I’ve managed to miss Sierre as a potentially good springboard to several areas.

Wondering how long on average to drive from there to those different areas you mention? I know I can GMap it, but local knowledge and experience of conditions in winter probably more realistic.

Happy to help you find something in Serre Chevalier if you fancy the southern French Alps and lots of other easily-accessible ski areas for even more varied skiing.

It's anecdotal as we are usually staying in one of the ski villages and visiting another, which is obviously a little longer total journey. Perception is within an hour comfortably for most of the immediately notable areas, certainly much less in to the closest lying two or three.

Yes, Sierre is relatively a wisper in headline comparison to the many of the most prominent names we associate with ski areas, but located right in the centre of so many ski stations.

I've yet to go to Bettmeralp and associated areas, but believe they are accessible from valley floor via cable car. They are on our little family list to plan for, when we are allowed out again Very Happy
