What I don't understand is they continued to sell tickets at stupidly low prices for years when they were not making any money. |
Hubris. Too many companies go to the wall because they keep doing what they’ve always done, and they keep getting what they’ve always got.

Pleased to see Loganair picking up some of the Scottish routes. Hopefully Eastern will do the same on the East Coast 'oil and gas routes' from Humberside.
As both Eastern and Blue Island had delegated ticket selling to Flybe, I just hope they get their money. Blue Island were selling tickets at 50 quid one way at the airport desk this morning. How quick can you restart a booking engine on your website.
Next conundrum is the 13 pairs of slots at LHR. Its a murky world but most seemed to be owned by Virgin and leased to Flybe. I'm sure that arrangement will be subject to scrutiny. But as a rule slots are: 'use it or lose it', in the current climate of stagnation Sir RB may well be having a sleepless night.

@chocksaway, my understanding is that the main reason Virgin got involved was for the LHR slots, even if things had continued the Flybe/Virgin Connect flights would've been moved to LGW and Virgin Atlantic would have made use of Heathrow.

I'm sure LHR slots will be monetarily worth flying passengerless planes if need be. It's happened before, I believe.

@DidierCouch, Indeed, but not sustainable for long (especially if Greta finds out ). I believe they hired 'resting actors' at one stage to make it look like the things had pax.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, Not heard that but it makes a lot of sense. Wonder if Beardie owns all of them!

While they have picked up some routes they aren't running them in a similar way. I am a long distance commuter. Until their demise I flew Edinburgh to Cardiff with FlyBe. Out on a Monday morning at 07:20 and back on a Thursday at either 16:45 or 20:35. Booking in advance I paid between£100 and £120 for a return. At the time of the collapse I had 6.5 returns booked. The schedule was good. Three returns per day at business friendly times.
Loganair will have one flight per day departing EDI @ 10:05 and returning @ 12:05. For the first week of operation the ticket would have been £237.
I've now booked with easyJet to BRS. It's a PITA to get to Cardiff with a minimum of 1h 40m travel time on bus and/or train.

You have to feel sorry for the staff. It appears the company ran their pensions off shore , outside the UK and EU jurisdictions so no safety net .

Given the carbon emissions of aviation, that change is a good thing. It's saving two return flights worth of pollution. There is still a flight available at a reasonable price for those people who need it, but people will think more carefully whether they really need to take that flight. If you've taken a job that far away from your home then I assume you've got some specialist skills and are therefore being paid enough that £1000 per month on flight costs is affordable to you or your employer, so the main issue would be the times, as both flights now take a large chunk of a standard working day. Hopefully you can find some way of working it that allows you to take fewer flights so it is less inconvenient.
