Three quarters base layer, just tucked into top of socks (but well above top of boots). Slight sock over layer interface allows for pulling on of knee braces (necessitated by too many years of skiing, too many injuries, and too little conditioning) without rucking of base layer. Ready to rock.
String vest of course, tucked into white Y fronts (for safety, and safety never sleeps).

Another vote for 3/4 .... I have skins 400's
They also go under my bib shorts for road cycling once it's not cold enough for full longs but too cold for just bibs

Mine are 3/4 falke jobs I got for £10 in TK max some years ago. Still great and definitely help with the sock under/sock over dilemma

3/4 length silks as I find wool too warm.

I'm with Jonny996. I don't usually wear base layer. And I normally wear shell pants only. Granted, my "shell" pants is wind proof and somehow being rather warm, even though there's no insulation. (I tried xc skiing in it one day, a rather chilly day, I was sweating buckets at my thighs. So it may just be me who sweat a lot)
But on really cold days (below 10F), I would add a thin base layer. Or, I switch to insulated pants, sans base layer.
Odd thing is, when I stop to pee, I noticed my thighs would be cold to the touch. But somehow that doesn't bother me. And if it's warm, I start sweating and it gets rather uncomfortable.
|
I run pretty hot too but actually prefer to have a wicking layer as I find it helps take moisture away from the skin. If it is very mild I'll open side zips a bit to get some airflow to remove the humid air. In general I find wicking and venting is the best way of dealing with my propensity to sweat!

then you have to wear them under your chamois?
Roubaix leg warmers are a better solution I reckon
I cycle commute all year round so I've tried every approach!

Tried both and both work. As the skins fit very snug it seems ok .
Then again even with just bibs I have never had to resort to chamois cream even on 200km rides in warm majorca

Over socks, but outside boots. |
Eh? How is that possible? Assume you use the snow gait to go outside the boot? |
Yea, doesn't quite say what I meant
My socks are longer than my boots are high, so I mean pull base layer up calf/pull my socks up/put my boots on/pull base layer down over the exposed section of sock to the top of the boot, so only sock inside boot and base layer 'outside' boot. As opposed to pulling up socks/pulling down base layer/putting on boot, so there's both sock and base layer inside the neck of the boot.

Over if you must but....
I have full length base layers but fold them up to top of shin height and then ski socks over the top. This way base layer isn't inside boot and potentially rubbing.

@Sideshowbob, I have very hairy legs and don't have this problem at all, maybe it's the material/weave of your particular socks?

I’ve given this a surprising amount of thought in the last hour - it seems I have sub-optimal thermal layers as mine are ankle length.
This means for comfort and neatness I have been used to socks on first, pulling leggings over socks.
On a positive note it does mean that I can point Mrs Spin at this thread for evidence as to why I now need specialist layers as a matter of urgency.

Careful, she could just get the scissors out, whip off a few inches (from the leggings) and say job done.

undercrackers under cycling shorts/bibs is more wrong than tucking full length base layers in to socks and ski boots, and that is already wrong enough
cycling knee warmers are ace, but I have to wear the right socks when MTBing in the snow to avoid a 2cm gap

I've tried different brands but no benefit. The answer might be more skiing to desensitise my legs (any excuse really)

Off topic maybe but the thread title reminds of another old favourite question:
Suspenders under or over panties?

If you are male and don't have enough flange on your ski pole, roll up your socks.....and stuff 'em down inside your base layer L/Johns. Two Birds with one stone, so to speak.

Ha ha, lost track of the number of times I tell clients to put only their leg and one pair of socks in the ski boot, but when I go skiing i put the socks on first, the thermals on next, and both go inside the ski boot. Never had a problem, in fact sometimes I've needed the extra in the boot to fill it out cos I've got such skinny calves!

I'm going to go completely against the grain here, and confirm that I wear full-length thermals under my socks. I know, the horror! :lol |
My normal thermals don’t have thick hems, and they’re smooth and wrinkle-free under my sock, and I’ve never had a problem: to me, it makes sense that way as I don’t see how it would be possible to keep the wrinkles out the thermals if they were on top, due to the action of putting the boot on... I’ve recently bought a new pair of thermals which have a ‘cuff’ bottom, so I have been thinking about cutting this off to avoid any added bulk around my ankle.

Exactly what I did with my pair. Just bought a sports direct own brand for a few quid, no need for anything fancy/expensive as it does the job, and turned them into 3/4 length ones. Wasnt too fastidious with the measurements as cheap as chips anyway.
