FIFA are thinking about moving the (Qatar Football WC) to winter. I wonder how all the national football associations are going to accommodate that! |
In the same way the Southern hemisphere countries would have accommodated a Qatar Summer games, I guess

Its a tricky one...
... recent history suggests that often the best chance "less tolerant" nations have of developing, is through their own people demanding it...
... and they only do that after years of exposure to the more open media/news/sensibilities of more enlightened societies, and more universally available higher education of course.
So the question begs,
- do we exclude them now, because they don't conform to our ethics,
or
- do we include them, in the hope of speeding the dissemination of "progressive" sensibilities?
... to quickly put one myth to bed - universal toleration (irrespective of gender, nationality, race or sexual orientation) is not a "Western value" being imposed on a foreign people - it's an enlightened ethical stance, and something that's been embraced by many of the greatest thinkers and civilisations in history.

Fry might have a little more credibility if he'd written this six years ago.

I really can't understand everyone getting so upset with this.
Everyone still trades with the likes of Russia and China... we all buy indirectly from them... especially China, which imho has far worse human rights issues... but I bet no one on here boycotts buying products from either country.
Sport and Politics shouldn't go hand in hand.
Would people boycott an Olympic games if it went to the USA? Just as bad as the aforementioned in my eye's.

medlington, that's just football. Who cares? |
Well it may be football but its completely relevant to the OP.
I just feel he wont openly criticise them as its their religion whereas in Russia its a state decision.
Should I have mentioned skiing in this post too to make it more relevant for you?

Rainbow salute on the podium - like any British sportsperson will have to worry about learning that!

Looks like Stephen Fry has now taken on board the idea of a "rainbow power" protest salute, see BBC News.......

Yup, I think the point of Fry's letter was to raise awareness and bring the issue into the public eye rather than seriously expecting the games to be moved or boycotted. On those grounds getting the Prime Minister to comment on it is a massive coup.
