To avoid getting to this stage, I guess (if enough people had been vaccinated). But I know of more and more double vaccinated people getting infected currently regardless... My gf's grandmother (double vaxxed) caught it in hospital last week from someone on her ward (who had symptoms but tested negative for a few days before then testing positive). A friend of their family is a doctor in the same hospital (in OÖ), and apparently they are simply overwhelmed right now.

I read something that until 8th December* was being bandied around. Somewhere else said 'many weeks'. In reality, whatever they say now will most likely change again.
On the positive side, they are still talking about doing this to save the ski season...

@Kooky, do you know what the actual rules for the new lockdown are? Is it just shops closed and stay home after 10pm, but everyone can still do outdoor sport etc?
Gonna be a LOT of unhappy people after the expense of setting up and opening the Christmas markets this week to then close them immediately...

@clarky999, oh you can definitely still get infected with it but the idea is meant to be it reduces the chances of serious illness/death considerably so people aren’t bogging up the hospitals.
I think it will be a bit like the Welsh firebreak lockdowns where they will do it for until say mid Dec so it gets the case load down before the Christmas tourist time starts.
We will see!!

It just feels like last year all over again - lockdown until X date which then keeps on getting extended. We are due to go on 17/18 Dec so it's quite tight! Also I read in that link that they now intend to vaccinate 5-12 year olds in the Tirol. What's the betting that even if they reopen for the ski season it will be with restrictions for unvaccinated children - which will be the vast majority of foreign visitors with children!

Maybe it's because there's less chance....
... of you landing in intensive care.
... of a serious COVID infection and long corona
... you will contribute to the intensive beds shortage which leads to a lockdown and stuffs up the ski season for everybody.

What they should have done really is this summer had a big vaccination campaign more or less saying ‘want a normal ski season/Christmas this year? Get vaccinated!’
November is a bit late.
I’m not sure any campaign would have worked there though?

This is from yesterday. Walser usually has a good handle on the situation [translated]:
Quote: |
"If you listen to the virologists, they say the only thing that can help us is a lockdown,"
the Wifo [Austrian Institute for Economic Research] expert said.
"And when it comes to tourism, I think, yes, we need a lockdown, a very consistent, hard lockdown probably until before Christmas."
Tyrol's Chamber of Commerce President Christoph Walser, on the other hand, could do nothing at all with this position.
"They are dreamers. In the event of a general lockdown, the winter season is dead. That would be the death sentence. Now you should finally let the measures that were just decided a few days ago take effect and not come up with new ones every day."
In the event of a lockdown, most of them would "no longer be able to open up," the employees would be gone. Exactly the same thing happened a year ago - there was also talk that a lockdown would drastically improve the situation and save the winter season. That was not the case. And he can already hear the arguments in a month and a half in the event of a lockdown:
"Then it would be: 'Just don't open up now, so as not to jeopardise the successes of the past one and a half months'." |

They have tried all sorts to get people vaccinated. It's like getting people to change their football team / religion, or wear a helmet.
Many anti-vaxers don't think it will hit them and say things such as "I'm not scarred of COVID".
The facts speak for themselves, most intensive care beds are taken by the third of the population who are not vaccinated.

Tbh, I’m in Ireland where we have had pretty tough lockdowns, very high vaccination rates and we are still going backwards and also facing another lockdown.
I can’t see Austria being able to sort this with a few weeks of lockdown, I think this winter season will probably be another write off, vaccinated with my booster this year, nothing to make me think next season will be any different. Because winters are tough with this virus.

By the sounds of it, it is going to be a pretty stringent Lockdown, potentially involving schools as well.
On top of that it sounds like there is certainly scope for this to expand to the whole of Austria. Comment from head of Upper Austria Thomas Stelzer:
„Sollte es morgen zu keinem bundesweiten Lockdown kommen. Dann wird es auf alle Fälle in Oberösterreich gemeinsam mit Salzburg einen mehrwöchigen Lockdown geben."
Saying that if there is no national Lockdown tomorrow, Upper Austria and Salzburg will proceed with their own multi-week Lockdown. Indicating that there is a certain chance that a Lockdown for all of Austria will be decided on tomorrow.

For a very stark demonstration of what is happening you only have to look at the figures published daily by the Bavarian health authority (the demographic and cultural situation is very similar to Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tirol & Vorarlberg) https://www.lgl.bayern.de/gesundheit/infektionsschutz/infektionskrankheiten_a_z/coronavirus/karte_coronavirus/index.htm#karte only in German but should be easy enough to read the figures.
For vaccinated people the 7 day rate for infections Bavaria wide is approx. 97 / 100,000 for the unvaccinated it is nearly 10 times as much 953 / 100,000!!! For hospitalisation the rate is 2.5 / 100,000 for vaccinated and 12.5 / 100,000 for the unvaccinated (this is also skewed by the fact that vaccinated people tend to be older and so more vulnerable to other diseases which in turn make them more vulnerable to Covid, so for equivalent age groups the disparity will be even greater).
No wonder folk who have been vaccinated are getting very grumpy!

Well with 3 weeks to go on my planned pre-Christmas trip to the Skiwelt, this looks to be the final nail in the coffin. It also then makes my planned purchase of a season ticket pointless, as even if they opened up before the end of December I'd still not be able to get enough use out of it to justify the up-front cost, especially once the early bird discount is gone.

There is no chance of this happening, the vaccine is not yet approved by the EMA. These are voluntary 'off label' vaccinations. Even when approved it will be a number of months before a structured offering could be carried out, by then the winter season will be over.

If you get something sorted out in France or Switzerland now with free cancellation there will be more accommodation available than usual because of the ‘people with kids’ thing. At least you can drive there from Germany so don’t have to think about flights being cancelled, you just need the digs.

what is the "people with kids thing"? i have also kids.
i hope tha means not that in FR or SWI there is also a matter with kids / vaccine... or you mean 12 - 18 y old?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@turms2, I’m not sure to be honest as I don’t have any kids so it doesn’t affect me. You would have to look at the threads on going skiing with teenagers etc to see what they are saying about other countries but in Austria yes it’s the 12-18 year olds which were in question (from the UK anyway with one jab).
What I meant is, because there is the uncertainty regarding whatever age group children from the UK with one jab (depending on the country they wish to go to) there should be a fair amount of accommodation available compared to a usual season when there is none of this uncertainty!
