@munich_irish, was it an excellent cappuccino though? OK, that's a lot. My wife, who isn't much of a drinker, still jokes about the fact beer was cheaper than tap water in Zermatt earlier this year. Would you say Arlberg food/drink prices are comparable to expensive major cities like London? This is what we're currently prepared for. So we're talking £5 for coffee, £8 for a pint, and maybe £40-50 per head for an evening meal and a drink. Am I close?

@inthecold, nothing special, I had one at one of the outside bars in the centre of Lech and that was not quite so expensive. Your numbers are about right €6ish for a coffee €8ish for a beer (think thats what I paid at the Moose last year), meals depends on where and how much you drink. As ever there are cheaper spots, the train station bar in St Anton is less than €4 / beer but that is a bit far from the bottom of the slopes and not quite so atmospheric!

We found the ski rental prices in Val Thorens incredibly expensive last season, the inflation since the lockdowns significant to say the least? What prices were you paying in France 2022/23?
For us Austria's on a par. |
I never paid more than 80-90 EURO per week for high performance ski. Sometimes less. I normally book them thru Snowbrainer or Alpinski (sp). It looks like their discounts (whatever it means) in France are much higher (they claim 60% off) than in Austria where it is about 15%. And we ski a lot (for North Americans) in 3 Valleys

Ski West. I used them for over twenty years. Servicing and rental - excellent.

@munich_irish, great, thank you. I appreciate London prices are still expensive but that helps set expectations at least. We decided in Zermatt to at least go half-board until the point we can stomach self-catering. That way if the food isn’t great, we can eat out a few times, even if it’s expensive. As long as I can buy some coffee and a strudel without wincing, I’ll be happy. I suspect it’ll be a shock when we go to a less expensive resort.

Just seen the weather forecast this weekend which states lots of sunshine however with spring like conditions and frost line above 3000m. Is this going to affect the piste skiing at all?

100% it’s just a case of which resort higher altitude vs excellent snow making capabilities of the likes of Saalbach

@chubuking, you do realise that the only time you will be certain of the conditions is looking back at last week? Just do it or give it up…

so if its now 8.30 for a large beer in Mooser or KK where can you go to save a few euro's?
Its not that much of a reach, saalbach last year was 6.70 a large in Eva

@enduroaid, Not sure the price in the Moose is more than last year (though perhaps consumption of said product is dulling my memory), Base Camp is a good deal more. The bars in the streets near Galzig are a bit less maybe €7 ish. The train station bar was less than €4 though perhaps not really apres atmosphere. The Mondscheinstüberl near the Nassereinbahn used to be reasonable but not been in recently, also nearby Fang House is probably more reasonable than the spots near Galzig

If a beer in Saalbach is 6.70, then 8.30 in St.Anton is a bargain.
Just saying.

yeah the apres beers in saalbach last season was 6.30-6.70 for a 500ml or in reality most of them either only did a 400ml or a bottle that way they could charge 5 euro....appear cheaper but you got less beer!
its a late season trip to st Anton for us for I'm sure a trip to the spar and sitting on the balcony will be grand.

Although we’re at a stage where the bars Saalbach are better than those in St Anton (if not the skiing). I think if you bypass the famous bars on the slopes the prices will be similar for both.
For beer at least.

What about the links between St Anton and Stuben? They're still closed for unclear reasons.

@tccambs, nothing unclear: the weather has been rather extreme earlier this week; heavy rain even high up, followed by new snow: wet snow avalanches
In the German Alpinforum it is already suggested by a local that due to this rain and subsequent heavy avalanches some off-piste slopes will remain very difficult to ski for most of the season

Anybody can recommend a restaurant for New Year dinner? Not super fancy, but nice. St Anton webpage only lists last year option.

@Alastair Pink, Wow! I can confidently say that I have never seen anything like it on a piste. Maybe well into spring, when the piste has started to break up from water running under it, but not like this. It will be interesting to see how they deal with it.
BTW: when the 5 EUR/day tourist tax was mooted, I asked the Tourist Office if there were any plans to cap it for long term stays. They said they would look into it. You can probably guess that nothing happened.

@ulmerhutte, Sometimes see them on Mattun and Meienwasen, have seen them on Kapall on the black above Gampen before but not so deep and wide. Warm grassy slip plane below heavy waterlogged snow over, very dangerous slide good job it stopped, need some infil by the pistebashers eh?

We saw the same thing in Zell am See, right down to the grass, in January about 15 years ago after a 2m dump and then a warming. Trees were so heavily laden a few fell on to the piste and one crashed into a gondola.
