@zzz, agree with that, we skied a fair bit today and found all of the above. What we did not really find is what you come this far for . But we have what we have. Just got spoilt last year !
Higher the better I would say at the mo

^ I’d agree. Those cams show the pistes which have all been gunned. Anything with no guns is either almost through or a bit brown in places. I spent the day between Ranfoilly and Nyon before taking my daughter for a few laps later on. Look, it’s fine if you want to family ski and not be overly worried about conditions. In Ranfoilly no blacks are open and some reds and blues are shut as they’ve pushed the snow off to rescue the main runs. Bottom Chavannes to Les Gets is heinous , all gunned and v icy in places as well as v narrow ie the bit at the snow mobiles is 2 bashers wide on both sides with it narrowing to 1 width.

@Oscar9423, it’s always worth a trip and you’d have a great time but as @zzz says if you do have the option to go higher then you should. If not then get some nice stiff piste skis and sharpen those edges...

How are Chatel pistes looking at the moment? Pretty much everything looks open on the interactive map but looks can be deceiving, are they able to run the snow cannons? We're heading out on Saturday - we're lucky to have a month so hopefully we'll get some fresh snow at some point (!) during that time.

@zzz @orange @bigtoe @levart
I value everyones' comments - thank you.
This is the situation....we can only fly into Geneva and we're looking for a short transfer - we are only there until Monday evening. So to maximise skiing (!) we don't want a long transfer - no more than 1hr45 probably. Our flight would be early Friday morning so we could be in resort by lunchtime and ski in the afternoon. We are very familiar with the Portes du Soleil and therefore don't want waste too much time orientating ourselves. How about Flaine???
So given the above - if we were to go higher...where would you go? Thank you all
|
|
|
|
|
|
Was about to suggest Flaine. Sitting at Mt Cherry in the sun, 4 degrees, snow went off in LG side at 10 but backside Ok still now. Forecast cold from tomorrow and small snow tue wed so I imagine they will be gunning and scraping the next few days. Weather is ace, snow is OK. I’d post pics if I could.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Oscar9423, with your quite reasonable transfer constraint I'd go to Chamonix
I had a very pleasant couple of hours around Brevent yesterday. We had a fine afternoon Brevent-Flegere Saturday, with easy spring snow under the Index. Up at La Tour (Cham side) equally quite fine. I can't imagine the Grands Montets won't be. The off piste is variable but really very nice in spots, as long as you aren't expecting powder.
Flaine probably works...but only the Flaine bowl and higher runs elsewhere I'd imagine.

Fantastic spring snow from 11am today on south facing (touring) slopes.
If you’re fed up with skiing on busy hard scraped pistes, look about, there will be soft snow on most south facing slopes from mid morning onwards. The avalanche risk is 1 below 2200m, so virtually all of the PDS, so its pretty safe too.

Just finished 6 days based in Chatal. Better than I hoped, but lots of pistes closed putting pressure on pistes with snow making, so really busy at times, and too many people skiing faster than their ability. Best plan is to forgo lunch and ski instead.

I arrived at the top of the Mt Chery bubble this am reasonably sharp just in time to have the lady in front of me wiped out by some french dude coming off the hill WtAF. It was right in front of the pisteurs and they were not happy ! Poor woman, she had t even had a ski and was on the deck already.

Quick LG update - fantastic NY fireworks last night and vin chaud. Conditions same same although not as cold last night. Avoid Chamossiere - Red is now a rock fest at the bottom and will kill skis. Ranfoilly bowl still ok bar a few bald spots, it’s holding up OK. Mt Chery was v spring like again this AM, backside all good albeit firm. Forecast v cold now and freezing fog has reached the town, I’m off up Mt Chery for a beer now !

Report from 2 days ago - in the Chatel area some of the runs in Linga were OK. Les Blattins was particularly good - but Grand Plan coming back down into Lindarets was awful. Loads of small rocks mixed in brown frozen slush.
With it getting colder let's hope they can make some snow to cover this stuff!

Quiet this morning in Avoriaz and ok conditions. Tour lift was closed first thing as a Pisteur fell off the lift about 10m and broke his pelvis. Not sure on the details but it sounded fairly awful.

The stash of all things was partly open today. Skied it several times with Oleski Jr and had lots of fun.
We skied all the way from Barbousine to Avoriaz and back today. Conditions are surprisingly good - icy patches and loose stones are pretty annoying at times, but it's impressive what pisteurs had been able to achieve given the lack of snow.

We headed from Avoriaz to Les Crosets today, conditions basically ideal considering. Lovely to have some quiet pistes and lift queues this morning, presumably due to hangovers.

Heading to PDS for first time (first time in any big ski area actually) this week staying in Avoriaz. I've been watching the weather/webcams/this thread with some apprehension.
We have full PDS pass. Assuming conditions are unchanged except for maybe colder temps bringing more cannons into play which areas (other than Avoriaz) are worth a visit? Les gets? Any of the swiss areas?

The forecast seems to be getting more positive also for next week - BBC weather (for Morzine) has heavy snow showers forecast for wed. Hope that accurate!

Anymore updates from those in the Les Gets (or anywhere in PDS) now gratefully received. Still haven't booked flights...but will fly out on Friday. Webcams show there may have been a light dusting in Les Gets...or is it the cannons working overtime! Thanks again all.

Very light dusting like < 0.5cm last night. Much colder. Mt Chery on the Roc d’enfer side now rocky at top. LG fading side patchy but OK. Snow much better today. Ranfoilly bowl v thin and scraped by guns running just now and much much colder. Place is full of mentalist french skiers though.

Yep, passage of very weak cold front meant a big drop in temps and previously melted south facing slopes now bone jangling and hard all day. Forecast to stay cold and windy for a while so the cannons should be going well for those that are interested.

Heading out later next week to the snow for the first time in 4 years and staying at my brother's flat in St Jean. We were planning on Morzine/ Avoriaz and St Jean. Any other easily accessible recommendations that are looking reasonably good at the moment?

Skied SC, PLJ/Linga, Les Crosets and Avoriaz. Link SC - Morgins is still closed.
Yes, very icy today. The run from the top of Alpin to Linfa is particularly bad. Cannons make it worse by dusting over the ice and hiding it, hence lots of accidents, haven't seen anything serous though - minor falls and collisions.
Around -2 but feels much chillier, esp on the lifts. Kind of weather when you don't fancy a lunch outside even though its sunny

I did Up Arare to chavannette, to cubore (I may be mixing piste and lift names here and down lovely red into blue valley run to Mossettes.
From there to crosets (the only awful run) down to planachaux. Conditions from there to lechereus and lapping ripaille were great. Back up chavanette and a mixed run back to avoriaz for lunch.
Really varied with a range from ice a few exposed stones through to lovely grippy soft carves. Mainly good though and I wouldn’t be put off if you don’t mind no off piste.
Cold temps so cannons going off in some areas. If they’ve enough water to keep them going all the thin patches will be sorted.
