nozawaonsen, Gives me the sheets just looking at that, you just dont want to be in there down that main chute, best if you are going in to stay far right as you come down and tight to the trees, cant go in them because its a nature zone but when you reach the bottom and near the main chute at low level it's a full-on schlep out until past the av barriers and down to Nasserein, not a nice place to be, great snow but very risky. When you walk/ MTB up there in the summer it gives you such a perspective, its awesome as a feature but like skiing into the pointy bit down a funnel, really twitchy place. its great snow and people sometimes get carried away and drop too low off the back of Kapall and before you know it you are committed to dropping in.....or not if you keep a sensible line. Sad that the Russians got lost in there, awful even thinking about the volume of snow that would rip down there, you just look at the river in the summer and erosion and it makes you think twice about it.

Markymark29, I suspect quite a few people get excited seeing the tracks leading off from Kapall follow them down and then leave it too late or don't quite know when to turn to meet up with the T-bar. And in poor visibility that would be a strong possibility leaving one with some tricky decisions.
Torli is as you say a magnificent run, but you really want to be confident about the conditions.
This incident and a couple of others this season do underline the importance of keeping together as a group and regularly checking everyone is ok.
Not always easy, but I've quite often come across backmarkers who are having trouble only to find the rest of their group is out of sight.

Great day's skiing today, mostly on piste because av risk high but a great late afternoon off the back down to St Christoph, 50cm deep although quite heavy. Also arrived up at Albona 11am just as they opened the back section, stayed on piste, lots of small avs being triggered by others below the lifts so went super steady but the on piste was 10cm powder anyway so brilliant. Nice off top of Arlenmader down to Stuben, slopes empty all day........cooling now, snow forecast. Great Christmasy feel everywhere, just fantastic to be back in the Arlberg )

This morning we have some new dandruff on the hill above 1800M.
There has been a technic malfunction with the St Christopbahn. Yesterday
It was closed from 13.00 hrs leaving hundredds of folks having to wait for buses, taxis (1HR+).
& thus missing planed meetups.
Last week it akso broke down.
It is running this morning but i would def check your itinery.
The easiest way back for the experienced is the old piste back to St Anton(off piste now) top of St Christoph T bar. Maiensee

Have had just an epic day today guided by Torbs and with fellow SH's horizon, clarky999 and my mate Dan, cheers guys great day. We ski'd all morning in knee deep fresh tracks on north facing slopes on Rendl, afternoon on Galzig Maienplatt, Shoengraben, Larches and then the big gully under the Galzigbahn under the lift. Just so happy, what a day......waist deep pow down Schoengraben, tank completely empty on last run, just made it to Griabli for a re-fuel! If you are out here soon, just be thankful, St Anton is absolutely in the best shape. If going op take a guide though, many small and large slides about,be careful.

Are you sure you mean Shoengraben? That's on Gampen, off Kapall, and the lower section of that is possibly not the best place to be on a day with high avalanche risk (although obviously I'd defer t Torbs' judgement )

sah, yep, was Schoengraben.
Very very good day - about 30cms of fresh on the hill, drifts of 40+ in places. Rendl Nord was particularly great, as was Schoengraben, and also chasing Horizon down Maienplatt. Lots of other good stashes on Rendl (an elsewhere) too. Fair amount of avalanche activity, there'd been a pretty big slide (from the side you don't ski) into the upper part of the Jungbrunntobel gulley.
Plenty of idiot Australians trying to follow us without any gear, or even knowledge of where the route is...

Morning all, I know this question doesn't really belong here, but it is more likely to be read by those who know the answer!
I am due to rent skis from Sport 2000 next week. Which shop (of Dorf Strasse and Galzig) is likely to have the better selection of wide, higher quality, skis available?
Many thanks

I think Dorf Strasse is the main store, that's the one I tend to use if I rent, and I store my skis there too sometimes. I suspect both have a wide selection though. If your accommodation isn't close to the lift then I'd recommend storing skis and boots there; the boot locker is heated so boots dry out over night. By the way, the Sport 2000 franchise is operated by Jennewein in St Anton - I think they branding is pretty clear but they tend to be known as Jennewein rather than Sport 2000.
