Encouragingly, perhaps, KLM and Lufthansa have both sent up flights to test the effect of the ash on engines (and windows). So far, the reports are suggesting that it's not causing the problems that were anticipated (or, indeed, experienced by BA009) in 1982.

For some reason, the VAAC issue two lots of graphics this morning:

There could be a window around midnight to fly from the north of Scotland to the Orkneys, Shetlands or Norway. But, otherwise, the situation remains the same for the forseable future.

Alexandra, it's a case of weighing up additional cost versus need to get home. There are also now few hire cars available. At Geneva (or might have been Munich) yesterday 78 people with pre-paid car hire with one company were unable to pick up their car as the previous users hadn't brought them back (as their flights were cancelled). And that's only the pre-paid people.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Sunday April 18, 1000
The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland is currently spread acoss the UK. Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until at least 0100 (local time) tomorrow, Monday 19 April.
There may be limited opportunity in Orkney and Shetland from 1900 (local time) today for some flights to operate under individual coordination with ATC. However, it is most unlikely that many flights will operate today and anyone hoping to travel should contact their airline before travelling to the airport.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 1500 (local time), today. |

KLM and Lufthansa may be testing their flights... But would you get on a plane and fly through the ash right now? I wouldn't, 2 test flights doesn't make it safe.

beanie1, I have guests in France at the apartment who should be leaving today. They are trying to hire a car to get to Calais. I don't think they have much chance, but who knows. I have let them stay on free of charge for tonight.

It's high time the test flights were flown - long overdue. In the Jakarta incident, the BA 747 flew into an ash cloud so thick that the airframe and windscreens were sand blasted. I rather doubt that the ash cloud over Northern Europe most of the time is anything like as dense. If the initial results from the test flights are promising, then I guess there will be further tests in denser ash cloud. If tests prove satisfactory, I would be very happy to fly again.

If only these stupid foreigners ran trains or buses! Quite frankly there are worse places to be stuck than Munich and if he really honestly thinks it's cheaper to sit there until Thursday then he's beyond helping. It really isn't rocket science to get home from there. Do these people actually need everything handed to them on a gilded plate?

Finally got through to easyjet. Very helpful and apologetic now re booked on the 0800 tomorrow.
achilles, but if NATS and eurocentre say no that's it. Or will the pressure from all the airlines losing millions a day be put on.
TBH if easyjet says it's ok to fly I would - the pilot is in the same plane as me and if he's happy to fly so am I.

Dwarf Vader, KLM are pushing to resume flights. If they are allowed to, and they can show there have been no safety issues, then the pressure on European air traffic control authorities will be considerable. It must be building up anyway, with actual flights showing no perceptible problem.

Today, thick cloud is obscuring the webcams of the volcano so we can't determine if it's still ejecting ash:
http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/
http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-valahnjuk/
Even if it has stopped now, it's clear from following the ash maps that what is already up there will hang around for many days yet:
http://metoffice.com/aviation/vaac/vaacuk_vag.html
The only hope would be for a complete change in wind direction. Even if this does happen the wind generally swirls round clockwise and it will take some time for the whole lot to move away.
Following any 'normal' incident it can take a couple of days to get all the planes back in the right place, clear the backlog etc. This is exceptional and will take many days to clear - once things start moving again.
There is obviously some activity at re-evaluating what it is safe to fly in. But, given the conservative nature of the flying industry, I can't realistically see this happening in a few days. As an absolute minimum, they'll want to strip down the engines of one of these test flights and examine it for damage in microscopic detail. More likely, they'll want to do it on several.
By calling this an 'act of god', insurance companies are not covering this.
Alternative modes of transport are getting booked up quickly now.
I'd suggest that EoSBers should be quickly thinking about alternatives - if they haven't done so already.

Test flights
Dutch airline KLM said it flew a Boeing 737-800 up to the usual maximum altitude of 13km (8 miles) on Saturday and Germany's Lufthansa said it flew 10 planes to Frankfurt from Munich at altitudes of up to 8km.
KLM chief executive Peter Hartman, who was on board the plane, said there was "nothing unusual" about the flight.
"If the technical examination confirms this... we then hope to get permission as soon as possible to partially restart our operations," he added.
The tests were conducted at the request of the European Union to see whether travel disruption could be alleviated.
More trials are due to take place later on Sunday in countries including Britain, France and Italy.
UK Transport Secretary Lord Adonis, said "urgent discussions" were taking place between European and international agencies to ease the chaos.
"We want to be able to resume flights as soon as possible, but safety remains my paramount concern," he said. |

1200 The Icelandic Meteorological Office says that the light winds prevailing in Europe and large amounts of unmelted glacial ice above the volcano means the situation is unlikely to change over the next few days. |

The eruption is now visible and can be watched on web-cameras and from satellites. The activity is ongoing and seismic tremor is restricted.
From midnight to 4:40 am numerous lightning strikes occurred from the plume. The cloud height is about 16,000 feet, periodically up to 24,000 feet.
Winds from the north carry the ash southward, where westely winds in the upper atmosphere carry it towards the east. The wind directions are not expected to change much during the next few days. Check London VAAC for further information. Click on the link "Issued graphics" above the map, and choose the most recent map.
Glacial floods will continue. A new gauging station has been installed near Þórólfsfell. No flood is occurring now. Forwarded data from the gauging stations can be viewed on the IMO web page. |
