Lovely day today. About 5cms fresh - OK not mases, but it has cheered up the higher pistes. I skied all over today with various snowheads and we all had a pretty good time. A lot colder, and the cannons roaring away last night and this morning - no doubt now as well. A temp inversion seems to have kept the town miz all day while we were basking in sunshine at altitude. sorry, no pix - forgot the camera in the mad rush to get everything sorted and everyone up and out.

slikedges,
According to the pics I've seen, I don't think you can complain about the snow this early in L2A

Does this suggest my trip to L2A on 6th Jan is going to be on wonderful virgin powder?!
I know the issue of snow at L2A is not as bad as other resorts but its the first inkling of snow on any forecast for weeks!!

slikedges,
I agree, I'll be there in march as well

oooh I'm heading out on saturday for my first snowboarding experience- going with a mixed group of experienced skiiers & snowboarders- and they're frightening the s**t out of me with their doom and gloom reports of no snow, the forecast doesn't seem to be great for the next few days either- Easiski say it isn't so?

surepure, welcome to snowHeads .
If you are going to Les Deux Alpes, then you will be fine, there appears to be good conditions there and it is probably one of the handful of places enjoying good snow. Show your mates the photos that Easiski has posted on here and tell them to stop worrying.

slikedges, thank you for the moral support.
surepure, Welcome to Snowheads. the forecast is good for this week - that is sunny and cold. Shame that it doesn't say snow, but it really is OK. we've had little dribs and drabs, but no major fall for a week or so. However, if you look at the photos and read the reports of others who've been here you'll see that it's fine. The snow is really good quality - galcier is just brilliant conditions at the moment. I also skied Dome and signal, Serre Pallas, Mura and Jandri today. OK there are some slightly stoney spots but it was much worse for stones last year. Just hope that we get another decent dump around the end of this week. Of course if you're after powder you're out of luck, but then you wouldn't necessarily expect it at this time of year anyway. Grand Couloir wasn't skiable until much later last year. (I think it's officially closed). Breche is closed but Little Tiger and I found some lovely snow while picking our route the other day. It's not the best ever, by a long way, but there's plenty of skiing for everyone, and that's more than a lot of places at the moment.
sorry no pix today - forgot camera again.

just got back to UK after leaving L2A on Tuesday morning to the nice sight of fresh snow. I will try to put up some pics from Monday (to fill the gap left by Easiski) because it was brilliant at the top, especially with the cloud level sitting below the higher pistes. Conditions on Monday were great and I think it must have been snowing a bit at higher levels most nights because there was no deterioration in conditions from Friday through to Monday. I was even getting a bit worried about visibility one lunch time when it started to snow a bit !!
Get out there, now !!!

Arriving in L2A this Saturday for first trip after a 10 year gap, this time with the Mrs and 10 year old in tow. (the reason for the gap! they don't come cheap!) Can't wait to re- aquaint myself with area. Last time I broke my ribs on the second day, but still had a great time as long as I was stood up.
Hopefully there'll be no impressions of a windmill this time!
Couple of questions. 1, what's the temperature like at glacier level, a bit concerned that the young un will get cold. He is well equipped but don't want to ruin his first impression. 2, How do we recognise fellow snowHeads??
Cheers

whitelee, Welcome to SnowHeads !
I had a ten year gap (but not due to children) and realy noticed the change in equipment - get a lesson to help get the best out if it.
Snowheads? look out for snowheads hats. Or phone Easiski - she's very friendly.

whitelee, Welcome to SnowHeads. Looks like you can expect some fairly mild temperatures and sunny skies. One of the major factors on the glacier can be windspeed. Make sure he has plenty of layers he can add/remove as appropriate, and the facility to leave little exposed to the elements around the face and neck. Goggles will help him keep the wind off the upper face as he WILL be wearing a helmet and they work well with a helmet. Turtle/neck furs again work well with the above as they can easily be taken on and off.
How do you recognise snowheads. Well look out for a perfectly balanced lady about 5' 3" with a dark blue ski jacket with Easiski written on the back. She should have her finger on the snowhead pulse.
Have a good one.

whitelee, good stuff these indoor slopes !
For hire in L2A, Easiski will guide you to Extreme or Sport Emotion, where I got a good deal just by dropping her name !
FTS's advice is good - goggles help in the wind that can blow across the top of the glacier.
Have a good time.

Whitelee, the temps at the glacier were listed as -5 to -10, not too bad but a bit windy up there.

Also out for my first snowboard trip on 6th Jan. Looking forward to trying to ID some snowheads.
First posting on here as well, so Hi to All!
Not too worried about the snow, temps are the most important at the moment, and now it's cooled down, I'm more than happy.
Where's the best place for L2A advanced snow reports?

snowangel., Huge! Yes - summer park, seems in really good nick. Big airs all enormous as per June and half pipe looks pretty good - big one on the right in use. Lots of rails etc as per normal - give me a bell if you're over, maybe we can get a coffee?
Well, here's the pic of our meal together in the thai restaurant:
l-r= Little tiger, James Annie, Tom Late Starter, Me, Mr Late Starter on the end, Late Starter, Sam Late Starter, Mr Annie, Annie (bit cut off).

easiski,
Thanks for ther very worthwhile updates. We arrive tomorrow evening for a week, and will be looking out for you to say hello.
Thankfully we chose L2A where not only is the snow good, we get one to one reports from someone on the ground, not some out of date generalisations which must be scaring everyone else, along with the doom and gloom in the British media.
Cheers

whitelee, Just got back and am just a teeny bit jealous that you are on your way out - checked this morning and they finally have even some resort level runs open. The three boys - my two and Annies son James- found the galcier temps fine as long as they got regulat hot chocolate and food - but as we met up in the restauranta at regular interval it was fine - first thing was a bit nippier than early pm but arriving back at Reading station last night at 10pm actually felt almost as cold as it was soooo damp!
Hope you have a brilliant time
Jasmine (late starter)

I'm pretty sure the Valentin is now open, and some of the nursery slopes are opening too. Sadly a bit too late for Mr Late Starter last week. It seems like hundreds of cars are pouring into the village today, and although I didn't go up it was reportedly quite warm at midday. Feels chilly enough now though! Here's a photo that Late starter took midweek of the bottom of the glacier. I will try to take some more this week, but I'm sure you all understand it's not so easy when working flat out!
