Another 40+cm forecast for Stubai over the next few days... Meanwhile river levels are rising nicely too!

I'll be in Innsbruck next January - all of it! I've an apartment booked in Saggen (Innsbruck centre) and will be driving out from Ireland. I'm hoping to have several friends from home visiting, and might even have room for a Snowhead or 2 if anyone is in the area and needs a bed.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

After a small op on my back I'm not allowed to kayak 'til the cut is fully closed, so we thought we may as well head up to the glacier yesterday to check out the snow...
It really is pretty crazy. I think they've had more snow this May than Feb, March and April put together... Currently reporting a base of 660cm, and I can honestly say I've never ever seen so much snow up there, even in midwinter. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts, and if the glacier is able to maintain it's current size over the summer or continue shrinking.
The skiing is actually really good too! Pistes are a mix of spring snow and slush, but very grippy and never too soft, right down to the mid-station. Lots of fun, especially in the bumpy sections.
The number of pistes open is fairly limited - I suspect due to the number of large point-release wet slides everywhere. It's unusual to have so much snow left in the (now) warm temperatures, and lots of stuff has been sloughing across common traverses and over/threatening pistes. Not crowded, but a reasonable number of skiers - I think enough that they could have justified more open slopes, hence why I reckon that must be due to safety concerns.
Coming up into the mid-station:
Higher up:
The circled rock is normally a 2-3m cliff drop in winter...
Chrisi spraying some slush:
And skis on to the gondola top station:
