Still no snow, and nothing forecast next week either, but very warm/sunny at the moment (8° today in Morzine)

It's been sunny and warm today, 3C-7C at different times and places. Pistes softened up a little bit, so it was actually easier to ski in the morning. By afternoon some of them became badly scraped and with icy patches, so extra care was needed.
Off piste is skiable, but feels like skiing on gravel and boulders - very hard and bumpy. Not much fun.

Heading to Morzine in the morning for a long weekend. Is there any point in heading to Morzine and Les Gets or should we just head to Avoriaz and beyond for 3 days?

Hi Folks. Flying into Geneva tonight and driving to La Chapelle D'Abondance. Is the road from Thonon up to Abondance open now? My French not quite good enough to work it out.
Pretty certain that the diversion is still in place when going down the valley.
Thanks.

Heading out in 3 weeks to Morzine for a long weekend so fingers crossed there are a few dumps before then. Looks like Avoriaz is best bet at the minute.

It opened for four hours last Friday night before it was closed by a further rockfall but I haven’t heard an update since. I’ve went over col de corbier as there’s no snow to worry about anyway

Been keeping an eye on the thread, as a group of us are heading to Morzine (first time) on the 6th. We're staying in Montriond, and have the option of being dropped to lifts at Pleney, Super Morzine or Ardent each morning. 4/5 are beginners and will be taking lessons each day, while the rest are fairly experienced and shouldn't have a difficulty with most terrain. There are a couple of boarders too. All that for context for the questions I have which hopefully someone can help with...
What condition are the nursery slopes likely to be in (assuming no improvement in conditions) - are there slopes higher up the mountain which are more likely to be used in bad conditions?
Where should the rest of us aim to head (again assuming no improvement in conditions)? Avoriaz seems to have the best cover? Can we get there easily via those lift options?
And for the boarders - will any of the parks or especially boarder cross tracks be open? If so, which ones and how do we access from those lifts?
Thanks!

Super Morzine or Ardent will get you up to Avoriaz. Ardent if my memory serves me well will drop you in the Lindarets bowl and probably gibe you more options. Pleney will take you up the other side towards Les Gets

You know it makes sense.
|
PLJ, Plaine Dranse, Lindarets, Arare all good today.
Avoriaz pretty crowded, but Rochassons, Pierre Longue, Rennes, Chauf Fleurie, Crete, Prolays etc.. all fine.

@fergs, which ski school are the beginners in, i.e. ESF Morzine usually uses Pleney plateau at the top of Pleney itself which is probably high enough to be fine. So they want dropped at Pleney. It might not look like much at the bottom!
For the rest of you, you want Avoriaz and “central” PdS - Ardent is the most efficient access. Super Morzine starts not so high and is south facing. I’d def go Ardent.

@fergs, https://www.ski-morzine.com/webcam
Link to 3 Morzine webcams
Webcam village - is looking across the village at the Pleney slope
and Webcam Sommet du Pleney shows the learner area at the top of Pleney.
This is the link to the PDS interactive piste map showing which lifts and runs are open
Edit link inserted: http://en.portesdusoleil.com/destination/ski-map/ski-map.html
Lots of webcams in the area if you search for them, Snoweye.com have one of the best selections for the Portes du soleil

We arrive tomorrow with eldest pedladson having broken his collar bone. Anyone know what scope there is for buying a cheap pedestrians lift pass (primarily for coming up from Morzine to avoriaz with us. Also to possible walk/snowshoe eg super Morzine to avoriaz or avoriaz to Linderets??

Arrived in Avoriaz today, first skiing tomorrow. It looks white enough but everybody I’ve spoken to so far says it’s grim and icy out there. Will let you know tomorrow what we find for anyone heading up here in the next few days.

Thanks @levart, I'm heading to Morzine on 05/01 and can't see any snow forecast before then so starting to get slightly apprehensive. At least you'll get a full week of sunshine if the weather forecast is to be believed!

@MHskier,
Pedestrian passes are available from Ardent up and back to the Lindarets valley, up and back to Prodains, and the super morzine telecabine although that only gives access to the restaurant. You will need to work out which bus you need to use to access each. I think that there is also a bus which will access the main Avoriaz entrance although never having to use this I am not certain.
I have noticed in the past that the Ardent pedestrian access to Lindarets is very popular for skiers to meet up with non skiers

@Paxo, Also heading there for 05/01 and looking forward nice firm crisp pistes. Morzine itself is seems pretty dire although Piste B appears to be open so you can get down from the Les Gets side. Going higher most pistes appear to be open according to the interactive piste map http://en.portesdusoleil.com/destination/ski-map/ski-map.html . Generally they know they are low and put a lot of effort into making snow.

Thunderer, we went to Morgins yday. The link is open. Swiss side lovely at the moment but everywhere needs snow. Some pistes are icy but all things considered conditions are amazing given lack of recent snowfall. Sunny weather is great too but the pistes will take a battering this week as it gets busier. All in all though there is plenty of good skiing to be had on piste.

And off piste if you time it right.
I went for a tour on the south side of Roc d’Enfer today and found good spring snow for at least some of the descent. There was some boiler plate too, mind......

In Les Gets with family for the week, considering the limited snow and epic rain it’s OK. Busy though and v thin in places.

Hi, we are considering a long weekend next weekend in Les Gets (4 Jan). Would love to hear from anyone there now about conditions/snow etc. I know there hasn't been a lot of snow and none forecast. Have been looking a webcams and it looks 'ok' but love to first hand experience from anyone there. We go to Les Gets regularly so are very familiar with the resort/slopes etc. Thank you.

I’m there now. Ranfoilly bowl is ok until bottom 1/4 and thin there. Limited under the other side and limited down to Pierre’s as well. A few runs shut here and there but on piste OK. Would I come for the weekend - no unless there’s >50cm of snow.

Spent the day around Lindarets and later Proclou with the kids.
If you’ve got a trip booked here this week or next don’t be too concerned, it’s not the greatest you’ll ever see it but we had a lot of fun today. Pistes are hard packed with a well groomed layer on top, there’s ice under there but nothing to be worried about as it’s only really scraped in the obvious high traffic areas like lift junctions.
I was expecting it to be a nightmare but we’ve only had better snow once in the last 5 or so New Years.
Yes 20 centimetres of fresh on the top would be nice but if it doesn’t come it’ll still be fine.

Personally, if I hadn't already booked, I would go somewhere with better snow. Eastern Alps would be my pick, or if fixated on France then somewhere higher.
